Over and over and over again

I was looking for to a nice long read as I started this book. The first story was not bad, if you could get past the myriad of typos and word misuse. Also the vocabulary was barely on a middle school level. (Graphic subject matter not included). Then I started the second story. Hmmm three to one, that's a little different. But that's about all that was. The Sex scenes were basically the same, with one additional player. Some of the descriptions were almost word for word. And how weird is it for a character speaking in the first person to use phrases like "my big blue eyes" of "my firm, plump breasts with their hard nipples"? By the time I got to the third story I was just skipping thru looking for unique plot or story lines and went right past the Sex reruns. I guess, if you don't mind poor editing, and you want a brain vacation, reading anyone of these stories would be a great idea. I just wouldn't recommend reading them all at once. And if you want to read more then one, read the third story first, then the first story, since it's chronically the next set of events.

I have no idea how some books get so many stars. Are we reading the same book? First, this contains four stories - all exactly the same - just change the names and locations. The book was not editied. And if it was, get your money back, Ms. Faye. Just awful.

Heat without the skill

Honestly, from romance scenes that are almost literally copy pasted from book to book, down to the consistent typos. I like the idea, and the concept is hot, but these lack an editor and separate creativity. The characters are underdeveloped, the sex is cheap, and honestly, it's just not realistic or thorough

Solid Commentary, Focusing on Literary Quality

A solid commentary on the Gospel of Luke, focused especially on its literary themes, presentation, and "intertextuality" within itself and other Biblical literature.

In the introduction the author establishes his belief that the book was written sometime in the final years of the second century and that the commentary will take the text at face value, implicitly suggesting that the "Jesus of faith" as presented by Luke may not accurately represent the Jesus that actually existed. Nevertheless, most of the commentary takes the text seriously and seeks to understand it as intended by its original author in terms of its original audience. On a textual level, the only matter of great concern is the author's penchant for accepting the readings of Codex Bezae (D) even when against the witness of all other texts, particularly evident toward the end of the Gospel, reflecting the influence of Erman and his views on the "orthodox corruption" of Scripture. To the author's credit, even when he does accept D over the other readings, he will discuss the interpretation of the passage both according to his view of omitted sections but also, alternatively, as if the sections really were written by the original author.

The great strength of the commentary is the author's careful attention to language, the rhetorical device used by the author of the Gospel, the parallelisms and evocations of the various events in the Gospel throughout, and the deep connections between how the story of Jesus is told in Luke and the message of God's redemption and rule throughout the Scriptures. Reference is made to the other Synoptic Gospels but mostly in contrast to how Luke presents the story: this is truly a commentary on the Gospel of Luke, and not an exercise in harmonizing the Synoptics.

To this end the commentary is profitable and useful for those seeking to gain better understanding of the Gospel of Luke. Beyond the concerns noted above there is not much influence of modern scholastic liberalism or insistence on the doctrines of particular denominations; the author is writing to a twenty-first century audience and does indicate certain points of contact, but on the whole is content to explore the text as written by its author to its audience.

Great Addition to My Library

I was glad to be able to add this volume to my library. As a person who writes sermons regularly, I was pleased to find this volume. It is concise, while picking out the highlights of the cultural, literary, and historical nuances of the text. I had just completed a message on Luke 15:11-32 and wished that this had been the first commentary I had consulted rather than finding it after the job was done.

I particularly appreciated Carroll's translation of the text. He struggles with some words which have become part of the historical lexicon of the passage bringing new meaning and clarity to the work. He explains his understanding of the Greek words in question, bringing a new depth of understanding through his careful study. As someone who does have a rudimentary understanding of Greek, I would have appreciated the use of the Greek alphabet rather than the strict reliance on transliteration of the words.

I feel that this commentary specifically succeeds in explaining the often difficult economic implications of Luke's Gospel. I consistently recommend this commentary to my colleagues in ministry and I consider it to be the most inviting and theologically rich Gospel on Luke available.

About the Author
Jane Cobbald was born in East Anglia, UK, in 1955 and grew up in Yorkshire. She studied economics and taught English before becoming interested in the work of Viktor Schauberger. She now heads Implementations, the UK distributor of copper tooks manufactured by PDS, the Schauberger Institute in Austria. She lives in Warwickshire, England, and lectures widely on Schauberger and his work.

This was a great introduction!

This man was so ahead of his time! He was innovative and original. Some of his ideas are hard to understand but this book makes it a bit easier by far! I hope someone carries out on his ideas. The world is changing and it's scary to think it might be too late to listen to this man's ideas and do something about them. He was a fantastic observer of Nature, we need more people who can do something in our time!

Think differently

It is an amazing book. It describes how wise people learn from the nature and innovate based on wonderful things one can see all around. A tempo of the book is a bit slow, but content is brilliant.

A joy to read

This book deserves to be much more widely used. Ziman's prose is simply wonderful, where Kittel is unreadable, and Ashcroft & Mermin often dense. It's a bit quirky (how on earth did he find the epigrams for each chapter?) but that is what makes it lovable. Anyone who doubts his scientific soundness should check out his massive "Electrons & Phonons."
The main advantage of this book is that it emphasizes conceptual understanding over mathematical manipulation. That's also its weakness: Ziman often glosses over or just sketches what in other texts would be occasions for massive algebra. Perhaps if you are a true theorist type, you can fill in the blanks on your own. As an experimentalist, I feel like I need some other intro texts to make me feel like I can do *some* math in the field. On the other hand, I don't know of any textbook that makes me feel I could do the truly heavy lifting.

No doubt as good as the first edition

I used heavily the first edition of this book, and have not seen the second, but it is no doubt as good as the first, which was packed full of insights into the many rich phenomena that exists in solids. It has served, and will serve, future generations of students in the 21st century in their development of new ideas and technologies based on condensed matter physics.
Writers of physics texts should follow the strategy that this author does, in his statement that "a treatise expounds; a textbook explains". The emphasis of any book in physics should be in developing the reader's intuition; the mathematics sometimes takes hold and moves the reader away from the essential ideas. The author is one of the few who has not done this, and that is no doubt the reason for this book's popularity.

Wow a pleasure to read

There are few physics books that I can say I enjoy reading for fun (and I'm a student of physics) but I must admit that this book is excellent. It holds true not only to its reputation but to what the author's original intent was. It is thorough, enlightening, to the point and fun to read, the author's sense of humor not only aids in ease or reading but makes retention and elucidation all the more easy! This is an excellent graduate text on basic solid sate physics, even though it was published in 1975.

It covers all the bascis areas, from periodicty to lattice waves, phonons, semiconductors etc at an accessible level to the beginning graduate student. A must read.

About the Author
Nikki Giant is the founder and Managing Director of a social enterprise, Full Circle Education Solutions, specialising in providing support to schools to address issues affecting youth well-being. An experienced classroom facilitator and trained counsellor, Nikki has supported dozens of schools, youth, and community organisations; providing training, workshops, curriculum resources and strategic advice. Nikki is the co-author of Surviving Girlhood and author of E-Safety for the i-Generation, both published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
