The wine world is awash with books that superficially address the art and science of tasting. How To Taste Wine is a step above, providing real information, real insights and a real procedure for tasting, assessing and evaluating wine as the pros do. Highly recommended.

An Excellent Guide to Wine Tasting

For any reader seeking to learn about wine tasting, you're in luck because there a dozen or more books available on this topic and this particular book is an excellent one.

The book is well organized and nicely covers all of the basics in appraising a wine. After first describing how to approach and evaluate a wine from the perspective of its appearance, aromas and taste on the palate, the book then offers insights into putting this knowledge into practice with different types of wine. Subsequent, brief (2 to 4 pages each) sections cover: tasting Young white wines; White wines for laying down; Red wines; Young red wines; Aged red wines; Rose wines, Sweet wines; Vin janes; Sparkling wines and other kinds of wines. But, it doesn't stop there; it offers tasting insights for armagnac, cognac, malt whiskey, and rum, each in its own sections.

Most books on wine tasting are written for the average consumer, with a small number diving into the topic much more extensively, written mainly for wine professionals. This book is clearly written for the wine consumer, although it offers some insights a professional would likely find worthy and useful.

While I rated it 5 stars, my true rating for this book is 4.5. It's not the perfect book on wine tasting, however, it is an excellent one and most readers would learn a lot, likely everything they need to know, from this book. I highlight all books I read and this one ended up with a lot of highlighting, a characteristic I find very indicative of a book's merit in hindsight. Highly recommended.

This book about our world's many crises and injustices helps us to cope by rethinking our assumptions and looking at ancient and recent world events in a new light. In it, hope is redefined inexhaustibly. If anything, creativity holds answers to our crises. Understanding both what hope is and what it isn't is essential to our coming to terms with evil and injustice. Hope is not faith, not wait-and-see, not compromise, not merely the opposite of despair. Hope is an essential element in patient, energetic, effective activism and persistent principled resistance to injustice and other evils. Dissatisfaction mobilizes, hope stabilizes in struggle. Hope helps our ideas grow and bear fruit. Hope is not a dream, it is a force that gives our life meaning.

Salutory antidote to left pessimism

Rebecca Solnit brilliantly recasts the history of the last fifteen years as one of important progress and breakthroughs for the left (or those wishing for some sort of better world--at one point she dismisses the term 'left') by highlighting liberatory moments--the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Zapatista revolt, Seattle, the World Says No to War, even the period of reflection immediately after 9-11. She also does excellent work thinking through the impact of social movements, which, as she says, is often sideways and culturally transformative rather than the direct achievement of a goal. I love her idea that nonviolent civil disobedience is the great invention of the twentieth century, even as the atom bomb is the worst. In later chapters, she falls back on fashionable positions of US activists-the local over the global, concrete alternatives in the present rather than grand schemes for the future, etc.--rather than transcending these dichotomies, which is the spirit much of the book moves in. But I found the history portion revelatory enough that I still give it five stars.

This is a book about activism by someone who has both done it and thought about it. Nothing could be more timely. Solnit challenges apathy but also challenges thoughtlessness. Passion is simply not enough. Strategies attendant upon real trends and trajectories of power are needed. Perhaps less now strategies of reacting than strategies of pro-acting. Any young citizen wondering how to be effective will find Hope invaluable toward thinking this through.. It is not a prescription but a particular contribution to an important conversation.

This textbook develops Special Relativity in a systematic way assuming no prior knowledge of Relativity; however the student is assumed to be familiar with the basics of the standard vector calculus.

The approach is structural in the sense that it develops Special Relativity in Minkowski space following the same steps with the development of Newtonian Physics in Euclidian space. Comphrehensive, and deep, and excellent learning resourse

This book is by far the most comprehensive book on special relativity. Actually mathematical framework and notations is treated with such style that transition to general relativity is straight forward.

Mathematics is explained really well and there are whole chapters explaining physical aspects of the theory. This books covers all the topics that a particle physicists or frankly every physicist must be at home with. Most books on special relativity do not cover important aspects of special relativity in enough depth as to make a student at home with special relativity. This is sad as without internalizing the physics of special/general relativity and quantum mechanics, NO one can think as "real physicist" can.

This book is remarkable in that it covers so many aspects of special relativity with sound mathematical treatment that is understandable and most importantly makes one at home with special relativity. It goes beyond what others book covered.

Even more profoundly the solved problems and solutions are excellent and make a book an ideal tool for self learning.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Lothar Redlin grew up on Vancouver Island, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1978. He subsequently did research and taught at the University of Washington, the University of Waterloo, and California State University, Long Beach. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, Abington Campus. His research field is topology.

Saleem Watson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and McMaster University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1978. He subsequently did research at the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warsaw in Poland. He also taught at The Pennsylvania State University. it was very useful - my only qualm was that I wish they ...

I used this book for my Precalculus class last semester, and I definitely worked out of the book a lot. Overall, it was very useful - my only qualm was that I wish they would sometimes use just some basic language to describe the more complex ideas they were covering. I know that in order to describe a complex idea they must be thorough and deliberate about describing it precisely, but still, it would be nice if they attempted to do sort of what the professor does, perhaps having a section where they're like, "Try to think of it like this..." Instead, the descriptions of the complex topics are very accurate, very math-booky, which is fine and all, but I think they could have went another extra mile.

Overall though, it had plenty of problems to work through, which was nice. More example problems, where they work through each step of the problem, would have been great too - but I was able to get by on the few in the book coupled with the examples my professor provided.

Multiple Answers are Wrong/Missing

While cross-checking my work I noticed that a problem was incorrect. So I called Cengage to them about the problem. They made a note about it and told me "We'll let the editor know". 15 minutes later I call them again to tell them that they missed an entire problem! On page 205 of this book you'll find that answer 11 is incorrect, and that the answer to number 23 is actually the answer to number 25. To make matters worse number 25 is actually the answer to 27! And then we get to their solution to number 29, a solution to a problem that doesn't even exist in the textbook.

So if you do get this book, don't blindly believe everything it says. If you can't figure out how they got their answer it might be because they're wrong.

Needless to say, Cengage will be receiving an angry letter from me.

Murky At Best

Don't get me wrong, I love trigonometry, but this James Stewart does not explain concepts in anything close to an intelligible manner for someone attempting to study ahead via textbook. Problems are often poorly worded and information is missing. Some problems are given no equivalency in the answer key and are unique as homework questions without any similar examples provided. I've done a lot of math before and after this book, and this book was quite possibly the very worst I've come across.

Great book, but not for everybody

I need to make some disclosures before posting this review. First, I have been trading and investing in the markets for over 30 years. I have done very, very, very well, being able to retire years ago at age 52. These days I am more of a short term trader than a longer term investor, using systems that are based either entirely on technical analysis or hybrid systems that combine technical analysis with elements of fundamental analysis. Second, I have long been a harsh critic of so called "penny stocks" (there is not a uniform definition of "penny stocks," but most consider stocks selling for $5 a share or less as penny stocks). Penny stocks tend to be very risky to either trade or invest in for several reasons and there have been thousands of scams involving penny stocks over the years, like "pump and dump" scams or "short and distort" scams. Third, I did not learn or expect to learn much from this book. I got the book because I thought it would be full of lies and misrepresentations about penny stocks and it was my intention to expose both the author and the book as full of nonsense. Now to my review.

This is an outstanding book. I give it 5 stars. The author (Peter Leeds) has a very good reputation and I know based on my own training, trading, investing and experience for over 30 years that what the author says and explains in the book is solid. No nonsense, no lies, no misrepresentations. The author candidly admits the risky nature of most penny stocks, and attempts to explain how to do fundamental analysis of the companies that have issued the penny stocks to separate the good from the bad. In the end, all movements in stock prices can be traced back to earnings, either actual, expected or speculated. The author explains how to investigate or "kick the tires" of the companies that have issued penny stocks to separate the junk companies from those that have real earnings and growth potential.

The book consists of 15 chapters and is pretty comprehensive about explaining what fundamental analysis is (as opposed to technical analysis, which is more focused on the past and probable price movement of a stock in the short term than the company behind the stock). Chapter 1 is "Getting to Know Penny Stocks," Chapter 2 is "Deciding if Penny Stocks are Right for You," Chapter 3 is "Buying and Selling Penny Stocks," Chapter 4 is "Avoiding Promotions, Scams and Bribes," Chapter 5 is "Developing a Strategy," Chapter 6 is "Doing Your Research," Chapter 7 is "Picking a Winner," Chapter 8 is "Trading Strategies," Chapter 9 is "Fundamental Analysis," Chapter 10 is "Financial Ratios: Comparing Apples to Apples" (explains things like Price to Sales or P/S ratios, Quick Ratios, Current Ratios, etc.), Chapter 11 is "The Abstract Review in Penny Stocks," Chapter 12 is "Technical Analysis with Penny Stocks" (the author does not go deeply into technical analysis as it often does not work well or at all with penny stocks, the author explaining why in the book), Chapter 13 is "Ten Rapid Result Tactics," Chapter 14 is "Ten Trading Truths," and finally, Chapter 15 is "Ten Key Considerations for Companies."

If you are managing your own investments, want to consider investing in penny stocks, and do not know much about funadamental analysis of penny stock companies or how to do it on your own (frankly if you are managing your own investments and do not know how to do fundamental analysis, you probably should not be managing your own investments), this is a good book to get you started. This book like most all the "Dummies" books is aimed more towards the beginner, not the person already an expert. The book speaks in plain English and is relatively easy to understand. I highly recommend it for those just getting interested or started. Another very pleasant surprise is that the author of the book, Peter Leeds, is pretty easy to find and contact on most social media platforms and he actually responds to people. This book would also be helpful if you are depending upon somebody else to alert you to good or high quality penny stocks, as your knowledge of how to do fundamental analysis would enable you to better research any alerts or recommendations you get (most of which come with something in the fine print warning you to do your own research or "due diligence").

One other thing I should mention is that there are a few typos in the book. Nothing serious and nothing that changes meaning. I mention the matter only because some people like to play English teacher instead of book reviewer. Bottom line is 5 stars from me. Very surprised, and pleasantly so. But this book is not for everybody. If you are an experienced investor in penny stocks and know how to research or do fundamental analysis on companies issuing penny stocks, you probably have little need of this book. A Very Helpful Book

A very useful book for all of us who want to invest in the risky small-cap stock market but at the same time minimize the risks involved. Don't let the "Dummies" tag fool you. This book will prove helpful to anybody trying to make money in this challenging type of investment, and includes important trading tips and the basics of analysis. A very good read too!

Surprisingly Good

I have to admit that going into my reading of Penny Stocks for Dummies, I had quite a few reservations. Like many jaded investors, hearing the phrase 'penny stock investing' evokes not only the obligatory eye-roll but also that characteristic feeling of nausea as wave upon wave of revulsion overtakes one (especially if the losses on one or more mis-guided penny stock investments were shamefully severe). Still, I thought I might give the topic a shot (if not a completely fair and unbiased reading) and I have to say that I am glad that I read the book.

First off, the author tackles the bad rap that penny stocks have deservedly acquired head-on, and confirms for the reader that everything bad one has heard about this investment backwater is indeed true, and then some. While at the same time acknowledging the allure of penny stock investing, he also tackles more than a few of the cute little fantasies novice investors in particular have about penny stocks, and in so doing demonstrates that what makes penny stocks most alluring also makes them most dangerous.

Penny Stocks for Dummies is smaller than the typical For Dummies book, both in dimensions and in page count. Written specifically as an introduction to the subject for the novice investor, the book takes a fundamental approach to evaluating penny stocks and for this I give it many kudos. The writing style is conversational with little in the way of jargon, making the subject easy to understand.

The book weighs in at just under 300 pages, and consists of 15 chapters (not including an introduction) divided into four parts and an index to round out the book. Part One guides the reader through the world of penny stocks. In the first chapter, Mr. Leeds carefully defines penny stocks, offering several definitions for the securities. I came away quite impressed with this chapter, and I now consider penny stocks to be more than just stocks with low share prices. Chapter Two delves into the rewards and risks associated with penny stocks, and here the author does much to address the myths and mystique surrounding penny stocks. Mr. Leeds goes to great lengths to dispel the notion of making fast fortunes in penny stocks in this chapter. Chapter Three talks about buying and selling penny stocks, and focuses on which stock exchanges to troll and avoid in the hunt for penny stocks and what factors drive the price penny stocks. Chapter Four of the book gets to the heart of why penny stocks have garnered such bad reputations among investors. I generally liked this chapter, and the only demerit to the chapter was a lack of specific examples from the penny stock universe- of which there are many, believe me- of outright stock scams and just plain-old flaky concepts.

Parts Two and Three of the book cover penny stock investing strategies and generally hews to a fundamental approach to stock investing (by fundamental, I mean an evaluation of the company and its financial statements). Chapter Five talks about the important role of strategy, and emphasizes the use of paper trading (in which no money is wagered) before delving into actual penny stock investing. I found this chapter lacking in one crucial respect when it came to its advice on the choice of brokers to use for penny stock trading and investing (note that trading is different from investing). The author once again did not provide any specifics, even from personal experience, on which brokers tend to be a bit more amenable to penny stock forays, and I found it rather peculiar that he did not even bother to refer the reader to some of the better known broker surveys such as those put out annually by Barron's (Barron's). In my mind, Chapter Six, which talks about doing research on penny stocks should have been followed immediately by Chapters Nine and Ten (located in Part Three of the book), which talk about fundamental analysis and using financial ratios in investing, respectively, and Chapter Seven, which talks about what criteria to use to make the final penny stock investment selections, should have been in Part Three of the book. Chapter Eleven delves a bit into those qualitative factors that often drive stocks in general, and generally do not apply as well to penny stocks which tend to be momentum driven. Chapter Twelve of the book delves into technical analysis and how it can be applied to penny stocks. Most readers will probably be drawn to this chapter, as it deals with prices, momentum in price movement and speaks to the rationale for most participation in penny stock investing- out-sized stock price gains.

Part Four of the book imparts a few rules of thumb (Chapter 13) and a few rules of the road (Chapter 14) for penny stock investing, and also provides a bit of general advice for successful investing in general (Chapter 15). Part Four generally reinforced my view that the book serves readers equally well as a guide to penny stock investing as well as to investing in general.

Overall, I came away quite surprised at the level of quality and detail in the book. Again, although I was a bit dismayed with the lack of specifics on where to find good penny stock brokers and notable examples of penny stock scams and frauds, the book read quite well as an exposition on stock investing (thus the book's four-star rating). In the end, to do well in the penny stock universe requires the same attention to detail and careful and consistent application of principles and techniques that work well in more traditional equity investing. If I were asked to recommend a book on penny stock investing, Penny Stocks for Dummies would be my first and only choice.

I'm sure my questions about bitcoin are not unusual, so I was looking forward to having the whole concept explained in understandable terms. It's possible that that's what happened here, but to be honest, I didn't stick around to find out. Every time Geissinger began to address an aspect of bitcoin, he'd take us on a lengthy diversion into American libertarianism, the history of mortgage defaults, or some other topic. I'd lose interest and skim through to see how that affected the development of bitcoin, but eventually gave up. If you want a fairly concise and unbiased (Geissinger is a big fan of bitcoin so has trouble explaining the risks without dismissing them out of hand), John Lanchester has a great article in April 21, 2016 London Review of Books, titled When Bitcoin Grows Up. Explains the history, the risks and benefits, how it's used, and where it might go from here.

Stranger than fiction

My reaction when I started reading news articles about "bitcoin": wait, can they DO that?

I've been bemused ever since, and then when the collapse suddenly happened, we all started to read about some elusive Japanese dude named Satoshi Nakamoto, possibly a fictional person or at least a nom de guerre. The story took on a surreal aspect. Even if you were a genius novelist like Tom Clancy, you couldn't come up with this stuff--Nakamoto, the reclusive (fictional?) genius who invented true electronic currency Bitcoin; Dread Pirate Roberts, drugs, hackers, drugs, counterfeiters, MURDERS, and a guy who acted all na�ve innocent but ended up with a massive jail sentence for providing Silk Road.

This book proves, life is STRANGER than FICTION.

- I learned about cryptographic principles, “e-wallets” and a “public ledger” which will be kept of all transactions.
- Dare to read about its secretive, enigmatic founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, who may be a real person, a pseudonym, or even a group of people.
- And then, of course, the Winklevoss brothers who invest in BitCoin early-on thus enabling them to make millions.
- With the increased regulation of Bitcoin, the author believes it will accelerate the cybercurrency’s eventual economic impact.

A sea of knowledge, one centimeter deep

This book widely specifies WHAT to do in strategic planning but it hardly explains HOW to do it. What I expect when reading this kind of topics is not the concept but rather the application procedures and practical techniques for implementing those concepts in an effective and innovative way. In consequence, I found this book repetitive and non productive for planning specialists. However it may serve a lot to beginners and students.

In Applied Strategic Planning, the authors give a comprehensive step-by-step guide to conducting applied strategic planning. They clearly demonstrate organisations' need for strategic planning. The book is different from other strategic planning models in some significant ways. The major differences are in the values scan, organisational culture, strategic business modelling and integrating business and functional plans. The authors emphasise the importance of application considerations and environmental monitoring as on-going processes throughout the planning period. The authors produced a high quality book that is an important reference source whenever I need to undertake strategic planning.

The book provides the reader with an overall understanding of the process of applied strategic planning and the required steps and technology for using the model in a strategic planning process. The strategic planning model covers application and implementation from the inception of the plan to the post-implementation phase, making it very practical.

The model involves nine sequential steps as well as two continuous functions, namely environmental monitoring and application considerations, that are involved at each of the sequential phases. The sequential steps are planning to plan, followed by values scan, then mission formulation followed by strategic business modelling. Performance audit and gap analysis follow, these two being different aspects of a single phase. The last three phases are integrating action plans, contingency planning and implementation.

I read the book because I would like to increase my proficiency in and knowledge of practical strategic planning and to sharpen my consultancy skills. The book is very practical and easy to follow. As a consultant, I should be able to use the methodology in the course to manage the planning process.

Applied strategic planning provides an appealing model for transforming organisations. The model is future focused and leadership driven. It involves all people in an organisation. It produces a plan that is detailed, comprehensive, understood and accepted, and has the potential to generate energising force to drive the transformation of an organisation.

After going through the book, I feel confident that I could act as a consultant for any organisation.
