The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu, by Dan Jurafsky

Why do we eat toast for breakfast, and then toast to good health at dinner? What does the turkey we eat on Thanksgiving have to do with the country on the eastern Mediterranean? Can you figure out how much your dinner will cost by counting the words on the menu?

In The Language of Food, Stanford University professor and MacArthur Fellow Dan Jurafsky peels away the mysteries from the foods we think we know. Thirteen chapters evoke the joy and discovery of reading a menu dotted with the sharp-eyed annotations of a linguist. Jurafsky points out the subtle meanings hidden in filler words like "rich" and "crispy", zeroes in on the metaphors and storytelling tropes we rely on in restaurant reviews, and charts a micro-universe of marketing language on the back of a bag of potato chips. The fascinating journey through The Language of Food uncovers a global atlas of culinary influences. With Jurafsky's insight, words like ketchup, macaron, and even salad become living fossils that contain the patterns of early global exploration that predate our modern fusion-filled world. From ancient recipes preserved in Sumerian song lyrics to colonial shipping routes that first connected East and West, Jurafsky paints a vibrant portrait of how our foods developed. A surprising history of culinary exchange - a sharing of ideas and culture as much as ingredients and flavors - lies just beneath the surface of our daily snacks, soups, and suppers. Engaging and informed, Jurafsky's unique study illuminates an extraordinary network of language, history, and food. The menu is yours to enjoy.

Enlightening and entertaining
By C. Ryan
Easily one of the most compelling books I've read in a long time: fascinating if you love food, language, or history. Jurafsky has a clear-eyed view of how cultures interact, not to mention serious linguistic expertise, and he's an entertaining writer. This makes for a great combination with broad appeal. (I can think of about a dozen people I know who would enjoy receiving this as a gift.)

Some of the stories are just mindblowing, even though I thought I knew a lot about both etymology and food. For example, do you know how fish and chips, Japanese tempura, ceviche, and old Middle Eastern cooking are connected? Jurafsky will tell you. (And he'll have the endnotes to back it up, unlike a lot of cute little gift books and websites that make silly, undocumented claims about word or food origins.)

Stick a Feather in Your Hat and Call it Macaroni
By takingadayoff
What do the chewy coconut cookies I know as macaroons have to do with the French almond cookies called macarons? Is it just a coincidence they have practically the same name? A misunderstanding? Stanford linguist Dan Jurafsky not only explains the relationship between the two, but shows how macaroni is also related, linguistically speaking.

The Language of Food is a collection of long essays about the linguistics, origins, and usages of words having to do with food. Each chapter covers another way in which food and language combine to reveal quite a lot about who we are and who we were. As humans, we really only need a few words and a few foods to sustain life, but we've managed to turn both into entertainment, and even art.

Along the way we get to learn how we came to "toast" an occasion with alcohol (it actually did involve toasted bread at one time) and how ice cream was invented. There are discussions on how the language of menus differs from a hundred years ago and on how marketers invent brand names for food items.

Jurafsky keeps a casual tone while divulging a massive amount of information. I believe this is his first book for a general audience, and hope there will be more.

Kindle Edition poorly formatted.
By J. W. family
The book is fine, but it was really, really poorly formatted for ebook-- a lot of the letters with accents are the wrong size and weight and many of the images are out of place and lists that are supposed to be side-by-side are interspersed with each other. It's v. annoying.

Not Good
By Nickkster
I really enjoyed the first book and jumped at the chance to get part two. I was so disappointed in the book. It felt rushed and redundant. I am confused about the glowing reviews. The story had so much potential. The storyline with Maddie was dropped. What about her revenge? I actually was looking forward to exploring what was happening in that relationship. Also, the way Aiden flipped out was not realistic. He was so careful in his reactions, I couldn't see him loosing control like that. I could see him coming up with a much more devious plan than that. Eva's conclusion...I don't know what happened here but it felt disjointed. I rarely give a book such a low review but I really hope the author looks at this review and understands as a reader, we owe it to the author to give truthful reviews to help authors perfect their craft.

Good Read
By Nicki Ervin
This was a good read. Some parts will have you emotional, but other then that it was a great ending to this story. This book showed that even after years the true love you have for a person will always be there. It also left a good message about relationships when going through problems. If you truly love a person don't give up. Instead fight for it! Now as far as the characters in this book. I couldn't stand that crazy Eva or Aiden! Some of the things revealed I would have never guessed. You never know a person until they show their true colors. Aiden was the devil in disguise and Eva was psychotic! I loved all the rest of the characters. Especially mama G! Oh and let's not forget about Bubbles! He was such a character!!!

That sneak peek left me wanting more and I can't wait until I get the chance to read it.

Good read. Enjoyed and glad that everything was wrapped up
By Toi's Fiyah
This was a good read and I enjoyed it. After awhile all the love dovey was almost getting to be to much. This is when I usually start to skip pages to get pass the redundancy and get to the drama. I was quite surprise that I didn't do this. I contribute this to Kyoshi gifted writing style. In any case, I'm glad that I didn't because babe around 60% the s*** got good and took off. Starting with the real Aiden coming to the surface, and his connection to another character. After that the cra cra was on and I couldn't put it down. I hate when people spoil plot lines in their reviews, so I'll just say that I found the part in the cemetary to be unbelievable. If anything that charater would have killed their nemisis as well.

By Jools
"My 60 Memorable Games" is the second or third one among my very early chessbook purchases. It's still a classic -- excellent games, and is accesible to players of average or higher chess strength. There's plenty of analysis, without drowning the reader in endless variations. Also, Fischer included many of his own thoughts he had while playing these games, revealing what he was thinking of feeling during the game. Also, Fischer actually included three of games he lost, and overall showed himself to be honest with us and also with himself, throught the book.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to just about every chessplayer, as an interesting, honest account of one of the all-time greatest chessplayers.

Take a walk inside Fischer's head.
By vvwwvv
A great look at how Fischer moved and thought during his games. I picked up some valuable pointers just within the first ten pages. A worthwhile read for chess players at any level. I've been playing for 55 years. I highly recommend this book.

The Greatest Chess Mind thoughts on his games!
By Johhny Depp Fan
I have had his book since it was first published! This is great because it is in modern notation and it is a true version of Bobby Fischer's notation on his games. He wrote this during his break from Chess just before he came back in 1970 and crushed everybody in his way to becoming World Champion. That is what you are getting, his honest chess thoughts on this favourite games and what he was thinking during the games. You will keep learning from this book all the way form beginner until you become a Grandmaster, for I have met many and they all call this book a classic and one they still read and study and learn from even today. So for us less than Grandmaster or Master level chess players we will definately learn a lot from studying this book and using Botvinnik's method make believe you are playing one side and spend two hours on each game writing down your annotations and then comparing them with Bobby's notes. I would also advise using your favourite chess engine to analyze the games with, I use Rybka and StockFish with Deep Fritz and it helps in making me understand any moves played, annotations or moves I would make that aren't mentioned and I can see the chessic reason why for all of the above! I notice that when I do this his games and notes become part of my chess knowledge and I see more when I play my own games using new found chess lessons I am getting from Bobby Fischer! My only regret is he never wrote another book to cover his games form 1970 to 1972 but Kasparov did that for us and others have too! I hope this helps you learn from the genius Bobby Fischer World Champion!

Informative, but she references a lot of cases that you have to Google on your own!
By Zuri Stardust
I used it for my Business Law class. The book was informative, but she purposely left a lot of information out whenever she made references. My professor's theory is that it gets us to research it on our own. Make sure that you have Google ready to look up some of the cases that she mentions on here. Other than that, the information was pretty solid.

Starcraft II: Flashpoint, by Christie Golden

The explosive novel based on the eagerly anticipated StarCraft II video game expansion, Heart of the Swarm!

The sinister zerg leader no longer commands her legions of bloodthirsty aliens against the humans of the Koprulu sector, all thanks to the combined courage and tenacity of Jim Raynor, General Horace Warfield, and a mismatched team of Dominion soldiers and outlaw rebels.

Although the queen is no more, Sarah Kerrigan is very much alive. The woman who once controlled countless alien minds in a rampage across the stars has been spirited away by the man who dethroned her. Now Arcturus Mengsk’s Dominion armada is on her heels, roaring for blood. Jim Raynor will need to test his strength, his wit, and his loyalties against impossible odds to protect the woman he loves. StarCraft II: Flashpoint bridges the events that take place in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and the upcoming StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Featuring never-before-seen glimpses into Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan’s past, this novel opens a window into a world of passion, action, and adventure.

Incredible!
By Luna
What an excellent book for Starcraft fans! For fans of Christie's character driven stories in the Blizzard universes, this is an absolute MUST HAVE! It's got a bit of everything in it: tons of action, adventure, great dialogue, mystery, suspense and heart touching romance!

The story transitions well from the immediate aftermath of Wings of Liberty to set the stage properly for the upcoming Heart of the Swarm expansion set. Many characters, both major and minor, have their motivations and personalities shown in spotlight to create a much more personal journey than has been explored in the previous games. Of course the main characters you would expect make appearances: Jim Raynor, Sarah Kerrigan, Matt Horner, Valerian and Arcturus Mengsk. More importantly, many of the series minor characters are also explored, including Mira Han, Rory Swann, Egon Stettman, and previously unknown members of Raynor's Raiders. The character driven plot gives a much greater sense of a "universe" than Wings of Liberty could on its own, giving the games setting more depth in hindsight.

In my opinion, though, the highlight of the book was not its wonderful, character driven plot to set up Heart of the Swarm, but the tantalizing looks that it gave to the past, concerning the relationship of Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan. The book goes into detail about just what Jim thought upon meeting Kerrigan for the first time (the famous "You pig!" and "Yeah but you were thinkin' it" line), their first date, Jim's deepening feelings for Sarah as she expresses her true emotions and motives.

While I have mentioned many of the character driven elements of the book, that is not to say that it isn't still set in the Starcraft universe! There are still fantastic action scenes in the book: plenty of gunfighting, battles in outer space, chase scenes and the like! The difficulty is that I caught myself having to re-read many of these scenes because the spoken dialogue between the main characters are just too captivating! Readers, I know it's difficult when the story is just so ridiculously engrossing, but slow down and take your time to read through the actions scenes as well! They really help to set the scene for just how much trouble Jim, Sarah and crew are in than the dialogue alone can convey!

To round out my review, I would like to add that I have touched very lightly on the plot elements, and I neglected to mention some of the more important things at all because I do not want to spoil the book for you. I have not mentioned the most tender moment of the franchise so far, the suspense involving the reveal of Raynor's true allies and enemies, or the sinister plot underlying the franchise expanded upon ever so slightly in these pages.

I have been a fan of literature since I was young, and a great fan of Christie Golden's work for Blizzard since I discovered her. This book, in my opinion, will rival her novel about Arthas Menethil as the masterstroke of her career so far. Going into the novel I had many idolized ideas about who the characters and their feelings towards each other. I was pleasantly surprised, at the end of my reading, to find that my ideas about the characters were not only correct, but enhanced by the backstory presented to us. To me, the mark of a great book is one which can not only present a beautiful overall scene, but also colors in the small details to create a full picture. In this book, the Starcraft universe is our canvas, and the complex characters fill in all of the wonderful details.

It's amazing!
By Philip Penchev
I'll be honest, I did not expect to enjoy this book. I was afraid it would be a side-story, unimportant. But I was absolutely wrong! Damn, the book is amazing. I have not finished it yet, but what amazes me about it is that it is written very well, the characters talk like they do in the game, and the story is very important, and interesting! It is the key story from two seconds after the ending of Starcraft II, to the beginning of Heart of The Swarm. If you care about the game, buy it. If you like sci-fi, buy it.

Overall, it's amazing (so far)!

Great book with few missed opportunities
By Sung M. Kwon
First I would like to lay out my potential biases for-or-against this book. I'm really into Starcraft universe, but mainly through the games and online wiki pages. This is the first book on the Starcraft universe(besides from game manuals) I've read thus far. I do read regularly, but my topics of interest in books were mainly history/politics/philosophy than fictions of any sort. My primary reason for purchasing this book was the new Heart of the Swarm cinematic trailer. After seeing such epic trailer, I really wanted to satisfy the itch to find out just what happened after Wings of Liberty. I figured that the odds are, I would have a decent time reading through this. Worst case I would be reading a total cheeseball of a story about characters I liked, which would still be fun.

Now that I laid out my background, here is my opinion on the book itself. Overall I had a great time reading this book. It gives much needed explanation to make sense of some really lackluster character motivations in WoL.

SPOILER ALERT

For me, the prime example is Valerian. If you played WoL without reading any of the outside canonical materials, his whole motive of "let's cure Kerrigan so I can show people what a great leader I can be" sounds extremely naive to the point of complete foolishness. Why not just use the artifect to weaken her to kill her? Once Golden tell us that Valerian is aware of the prophecy, his plan suddenly makes a whole load of sense. This revelation, along with the rest of first three chapters of the book, IMO, is so necessary that I want to praise Golden and criticize Blizzard. To Golden, thank you for making better sense of the whole messy final arc of WoL. To Blizzard... why would you leave out such an important information that help make sense rest of WoL to outside of your main storytelling device, that is the actual game? Whatever their reasoning is, the first three chapters alone made me appreciate my purchase of the book as a Starcraft fan.

Another messy plot dynamics of WoL that was better fleshed out here is Acturus-Tychus-Moebius-Valerian connection. If you played SC, BW then WoL without reading any of the books like me, the aforementioned connections is just messy. First, Acturus releases Tychus as a spy/assassin. Tychus then gets hired by Moebius to collect the artifacts. Moebius is collecting artifacts because of Valerian (also maybe because Narud is Duran and wants them for currently untold purposes), who is suppose to do this in secret from Acturus. This puts Tychus in middle of pretty much everyone, which is a huge problem in surprise-focused arcs like the "Media Blitz" in WoL. That doesn't get resolved in this book, but Golden at least simplifies this convoluted 4-way mess by turning Moebius into treacherous group that was actually in league with Acturus.

But enough about problems with WoL... More on Golden's book, Flashpoint does a great job in making sense of Kerrigan's motivations for upcoming HotS. We all knew she was not going to become Queen of Blades again because Blizzard just used entire game's plot to turn her human-ish (what a complete waste of entire WoL plot would have been if she would just revert back to being the Queen of Blades!)... so that left few questions such as how would she emotionally deal with all the carnage she caused and what her goal is now that she's less zerg-like? Flashpoint explain both through her love for James Raynor and her desire for revenge against Acturus. But instead of just turning that into a form of info-dump, Golden walks us through various phases of Kerrigan's emotional 'growth'. She would start off as a trauma victim, ridden with guilt and self hate. With Raynor's help she becomes more, erm, functional over time. It is here where Kerrigan-Raynor relationship is much better fleshed out through flashbacks, and I agree with few other reviewers on this site, this is probably the best form of character growth in this book and it's just really good. She goes through a rather rapid surge of recovery at the Prometheus base arc but by this point, all of the pieces about Kerrigan as a character is in place and her transition into a super warrior doesn't feel rushed at all. Rather, it felt welcome.

Two other characters, Valerian and Mira Han, felt bit cheesy in their overall goodness but I feel hesitant to fault this book for. Valerian had much of his character fleshed out in previous books, or so I am told, and his depiction in Flashpoint is suppose to be true to the framework laid out before Golden so there is that. Mira Han is largely motivated by her true-yet-playful love towards Matt, and her 'allegiance' to Raynor is true to the character but bits of informations about her tertiary good works, like giving food to refuges, feels like it came out of nowhere; doesn't hurt the story at all, but it felt just bit cheesy. Even so I feel hesitant about marking it down as a fault because the universe and story so far had enough bad guys as it is, did we really need to turn everyone into some sort of grim-dark survivor? Maybe to some, but I don't think it's necessary and bit of cheesy-goodness doesn't really hurt.

My issue with the book is that I feel like it missed out on a HUGE opportunity early on. When Acturus and Valerian is faced off against each other early on, the fleet that Valerian brought with him follows his order to fight against their Emperor to protect the former Queen of Blades. The crew of Bucephalus and maybe few other captains would be understandable, but the whole scale of things was basically a civil war breaking out. If I understand the lore correctly, resocialization is only for the marines/firebats/marauders (basically infantry/meatshield) so I'm assuming that all of the captains under Valerian's command freely decided to stick with him against their emperor. This pushed suspension of disbelief bit too far for me. And by missed opportunity, if you ever saw the remake of Battlestar Galactica or good books on topics of revolution/rebellion/coup-de-ta, you should see the ample opportunity for the mind games that both Acturus and Valerian would be forced into with various captains of battlecruisers as they would have to vie for their loyalty. Perhaps it would be too "off-topic" but I felt that it could have made for great read.

So there you have it, IMO Flashpoint is a great read. It missed few opportunities but it still help iron out the overall lore and tells the tale of Raynor's Raider's escape, new allegiances forming, and most importantly, Kerrigan's transformation through her love for Raynor and her hate towards Acturus.

Reality Hunger: A Manifesto, by David Shields

With this landmark book, David Shields fast-forwards the discussion of the central artistic issues of our time. Who owns ideas? How clear is the distinction between fiction and nonfiction? Has the velocity of digital culture rendered traditional modes obsolete? Exploring these and related questions, Shields orchestrates a chorus of voices, past and present, to reframe debates about the veracity of memoir and the relevance of the novel. He argues that our culture is obsessed with “reality,” precisely because we experience hardly any, and urgently calls for new forms that embody and convey the fractured nature of contemporary experience.

"I doubt very much that I’m the only person who’s finding it more and more difficult to want to read or write novels," David Shields acknowledges in Reality Hunger, then seeks to understand how the conventional literary novel has become as lifeless a form as the mass market bodice-ripper. Shields provides an ars poetica for writers and other artists who, exhausted by the artificiality of our culture, "obsessed by real events because we experience hardly any," are taking larger and larger pieces of the real world and using them in their work. Reality Hunger is made of 600-odd numbered fragments, many of them quotations from other sources, some from Shields’s own books, but none properly sourced--the project being not a treasure hunt or a con but a good-faith presentation of what literature might look like if it caught up to contemporary strategies and devices used in the other arts, and allowed for samples (that is, quotation from art and from the world) to revivify existing forms. Shields challenges the perceived superiority of the imagination and exposes conventional literary pieties as imitation writing, the textual equivalent of artificial flavoring, sleepwalking, and small talk. I can’t name a more necessary or a more thrilling book. --Sarah Manguso

Review
"In his new book, Reality Hunger, David Shields makes a case that a new literary form has arrived. [He] challenges our most basic literary assumptions about originality, authenticity, and creativity. Reality Hunger has caused a stir in literary circles. [The book] has struck a nerve."—Andrew Richard Albanese, Publishers Weekly (cover article)

"Reality Hunger is an exhilarating smash-up. . . . a work of virtuoso banditry that promises to become, like Lewis Hyde’s The Gift for earlier generations, the book that artists in all media turn to for inspiration, vindication, and altercation as they struggle to reinvent themselves against the headwinds of our time."—Rob Nixon, Chronicle of Higher Education

"Maybe he’s simply ahead of the rest of us, mapping out the literary future of the next generation."—Susan H. Greenberg, Newsweek

"The driving force behind this entertaining and highly persuasive polemic is a frustration with the contemporary mainstream novel. . . . I can’t stop recommending it to my friends. There is no more effective description (and example) of the aesthetic concerns of the internet age than this."—Edward King, The Times of London

"Shields has a point. He gives a damn. He's trying to make a difference. He's using the best of his formidable talents to do that."—Wayne Alan Brenner, The Austin Chronicle

"I love this book and am amused to see some of the hysterical reactions it’s provoked—proof, I think, of its radical truthfulness. Shields is utterly uninterested in providing intellectual comfort; he bravely, uncompromisingly delivers the news."—Walter Kirn

“On the one hand: Who does this guy think he is? On the other: It’s about time someone said something this honest in print. . . . [I am] grateful for this beautiful (yes, raw and gorgeous) book.”—Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times

“This is the most provocative, brain-rewiring book of 2010. It’s a book that feels at least five years ahead of its time and teaches you how to read it as you go.”—Alex Pappademas, GQ

“I’ve just finished reading Reality Hunger: A Manifesto and I’m lit up by it—astonished, intoxicated, ecstatic, overwhelmed.”—Jonathan Lethem

“Good manifestos propagate. Their seeds cling to journals and blogs and conversations, soon enough sprawling sub-manifestoes of acclamation or rebuttal. After the opening call to action, a variety of minds turn their attention to the same problem. It’s the humanist ideal of a dialectic writ large: ideas compete and survive by fitness, not fiat. David Shields’s Reality Hunger has just the immodest ambition and exhorter’s zeal to bring about this happy scenario.”—Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

“Reality Hunger, by David Shields, might be the most intense, thought-accelerating book of the last 10 years.”—Chuck Klosterman (on Twitter)

“The subtitle of David Shields’s Reality Hunger categorizes it as ‘a manifesto,’ which is a little like calling a nuclear bomb ‘a weapon.’”—Don McLesse, Kirkus Reviews

“Thrilling to read, even if you disagree with much of it.”—Zadie Smith, The Guardian

“I find Shields’s book absorbing, even inspiring. The ideas he raises are so important, his ideas are so compelling, that I raved about this book the whole time I was reading it and have regularly quoted it to friends in the weeks since.”—Jami Attenberg, Bookforum

“A collection of wisdoms and aphorisms, some borrowed/stolen/appropriated from others, some written by Shields himself—which layer one upon the other to shimmer with an insistence on a literature that reflects modern’s life’s many complexities and contradictions.”—Debra Gwartney, Portland Oregonian

“This is the book our sick-at-heart moment needs—like a sock in the jaw or an electric jolt in the solar plexus—to wake it up.”—Wayne Koestenbaum

“It’s already become required reading in university spheres, galleys passed from one student to the next like an illicit hit of crack cocaine. I came away from Reality Hunger excited about writing my own fiction, and impatient about books that don’t offer these same thrills.”—Sarah Weinman, Flavorwire

“David Shields has put a bullet in the brain of our ridiculously oversimplified compulsion to think of everything as a narrative.”—Paul Constant, The Stranger

“One of the most provocative books I’ve ever read. . . . I think it’s destined to become a classic.”—Charles D’Ambrosio

"Thank goodness for David Shields and his new book, Reality Hunger: A Manifesto, which, among other things, is a literary battle cry for the creation of a new genre, one that doesn't draw distinctions between fiction and nonfiction, originality and plagiarism, memoir and fabrication, scripted and unscripted. . . . Shields, brilliant, thoughtful, and yes, original, is calling for an 'ars poetica for the burgeoning group of interrelated but unconnected artists in a variety of forms and media.'"—Cathy Alter, Atlantic

"David Shields’s radical intellectual manifesto, Reality Hunger, is a rousing call to arms for all artists to reject the laws governing appropriation, obliterate the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, and give rise to a new modern form."--Elissa Schapell, Vanity Fair

"A book that defends plagiarism, champions faked memoirs, and declares fiction dead has the literary world up in arms."—Laura Miller, Salon

"I don’t think it would be too strong to say that Shields’s book will be a sort of bible for the next generation of culture-makers."—David Griffith, Bookslut

"This dude’s book is the hip-hop album of the year."—Peter Macia, Fader

". . . a guidebook for where literary writing could go in the future. . . . You might not agree with Shields’s broadside or his hardheaded conclusions, but it’s difficult not to fall under the sway of this voracious and elegantly structured book. Reality Hunger is ultimately an invigorating shakedown of the literary status quo: recommended for readers, essential for writers."”—Scott Indrisek, Time Out New York

“A mind-bending manifesto.”—The New York Times

“Reality Hunger urgently and succinctly addresses matters that have been in the air, have relentlessly gathered momentum, and have just been waiting for someone to link them together. . . . [Shields’s] book probably heralds what will be the dominant modes in years and decades to come.”—Luc Sante, The New York Times Book Review

Sam Tanenhaus: “Every once in awhile a loud shout comes from the literary world that tells us that everybody is doing everything wrong. . . . Shields has done something ambitious here, and he has done it in an unusual way. . . . Will Reality Hunger have an impact on the way fiction writers and essay writers go about their work?” Luc Sante: “I think it might.” The New York Times Book Review podcast

“With an assist from others’ quotations, Shields argues that our deep need for reality is not being met by the old and crumbling models of literature.”—Editors’ Choice, The New York Times Book Review

“Give him credit. Here’s a manifesto that goes for broke. His book . . . champions his vision of a new avant-garde by enacting it.”—Wen Stephenson, The New York Times Book Review

“His complaints about the tediousness and terminality of current fictional convention are well-taken: it is always a good time to shred formulas.”—James Wood, The New Yorker

“The phrase ‘paradigm shift’ is one that induces my gag reflex, but that’s what he’s up to here. And, dear readers, shift happens.”—Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett, Seattle Times

“One of the great books of the year. The book, quite simply, is a marvel, far more provocative and revelatory than annoying . . . and very much a part of the community of writers who are determined to be infinitely smarter than we may all deserve . . . Here’s a guy who actually thinks he knows what’s happening, Mr. Jones. I tell you it’s pretty exciting. Here, at last, is the extraordinary writer David Shields with a book that’s the equivalent of a mall ‘you are here’ map. Reading Shields maybe be the first time I’ve actually liked looking at the map and learning where we are.”—Jeff Simon, Buffalo News

“America is losing faith with its fictions. Such is the thesis of David Shields, whose new book, Reality Hunger: A Manifesto, lays out a compelling case for the prosecution.”—Tom Shone, The Daily Beast

“As is true of any good manifesto, [Shields] clocks or locks a feeling in the air, something already everywhere, familiar but not fully formed.”—Alexandra Juhasz, The Huffington Post

“David Shields has set the culture class abuzz with his attack on an obsession with reality that doesn’t exist. Reality Hunger refuses to sit still, leaping among ideas, arguments, programmatic declarations, aphorisms, personal asides, history, and etymology. For anyone frustrated, disappointed, or confused about the purpose of literature in the 21st century, . . . for anyone who . . . is a member of the ‘rarefied world of literary culture’ (or would like to join), Reality Hunger is a must-read.—Ryan Bigge, Toronto Star

“A small new book that’s been making a very big splash. . . . It’s clear . . . why Shields’s self-proclaimed manifesto is making so much noise: its ostensible blast is at the fiction in every novel, but its reverberating echoes can be felt in the facts of any magazine, any newspaper.”—Rick Groen, Toronto Globe and Mail

“How can we create a literature that’s urgent and vital and true to this particular here and now? Practices of writing, and reading, are shifting. None of us should take current modes of expression for granted. I want people to read [Shields’s] book and passionately debate these issues. I want this discussion to matter. And I want to be part of it.”—Catherine Bush, Toronto Globe and Mail

“Shields is the literary equivalent of a frenetic DJ, trolling through vinyl albums, turning other people’s music into his on-stage creation. … For an egghead like me, he is loads of fun to read. Reality Hunger is a feverish collage of insights, often paraphrased and mashed up from other writers.”—Richard Handler, CBC Canada

“A spirited polemic on behalf of nonfiction. . . . an important book. The fiction vs. nonfiction debate has become intense in recent years, and Shields cranks it up a notch. . . smart, stimulating, and aphoristic . . . a provocative and entertaining manifesto.”—Blake Morrison, The Guardian, “Book of the Week”

“Essential reading for both readers and writers. Bold, entertaining, contentious, it pushes us to think about the processes and future of fiction-making, as well as its relation to nonfiction. In short, it shakes us up a bit.”—Stephen Emms, The Guardian

“He manages to give bourgeois traditionalists a right good kicking. One cannot help but admire his verve as well as his nerve.”—Sean O’Hagan, London Observer

“The book is anything but a monograph; it’s a polygraph.”—Toby Litt, Financial Times

“Reality Hunger is more than thought-provoking; it’s one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in a long time.”—Jonathan Safran Foer

“Reality Hunger is brilliant. It keeps the reader alert and attentive and excited through sheer intelligence, epigrammatic concision, wit, and sheer rightness, as when a pronouncement is so correct that it just pulls all the clouds aside. . . . There’s a feeling of the imminence of violence in these perceptions. This is a great compliment.”—Charles Baxter

“Reality Hunger is witty, insightful, and compulsively readable. Every page abounds in fresh observations.”—Lydia Davis

“I think Reality Hunger is absolutely wonderful. Exhilarating.”—Mark Leyner

Still Hungry
By Eric Lundgren
1. Despite this book's praise for collage and appropriation, cutting passages from the jacket copy and/or Shields' own description of the book, then pasting as a five-star Amazon review, isn't valuable in any way.

2. Speaking of the jacket copy, by writing a negative review of this book it seems I will be "defending the status quo." Always useful to caricature your opponents in advance. And I thought the status quo totally depressed me ...

3. What is this "conventional literary novel" Shields keeps talking about? Yeah, I also have no desire to read Olive Kittredge, but my lack of interest in the latest celebrity memoir hardly discredits the genre of memoir as a whole. Is Shields reading Hemon, Javier Marias, Percival Everett, Kathryn Davis? For someone who persuasively writes of the novel as a hybrid genre and wants to stake out an indefinite space for his own work, Shields really likes drawing lines in the sand.

4. When Shields does admire a fiction writer (i.e. Bernhard, Coetzee, Sebald) he pretends the writer is a sort of essayist in disguise. This is bizarre. All of the above writers create imaginary characters and involve them in invented narratives. Photos in Sebald do not make him a documentarian. The reason their books do not seem like fiction is that they are incredibly well executed, that is to say artistic. Fiction that does not seem like fiction is simply good fiction. Shields can't admit that the magic is working.

5. How can a book about reality-based forms of art and writing not mention historical fiction even once? Is it because historical fiction sounds staid and proves that Shields' ideas aren't as new and exciting as they want to be? Anybody remember postmodernism, by the way?

6. "Elizabeth Costello," a book Shields recommends several times, would surely create much less cross-genre frisson (would be much less interesting in Shields' own terms) if it was just a series of lectures, if it didn't have its so-called fictional rigging. The fictional elements of it are what create the epistemological uncertainty -- a fact that was certainly remarked upon when Coetzee delivered the stories as lectures at universities.

7. It's funny that a writer tries to be au courant by citing 40-50-year-old quotes announcing the death of fiction. Doesn't this undermine the case a little? No doubt he's right ... about fiction's irrelevance to the culture, anyway, but surely it will be displaced by more meaningless chatter, social networking, and noise, not the lyric essay. Actually this book seems to be in many ways a manifesto for the blogosphere. I kept thinking, blogs are what you want to read, man. Brevity, appropriation, truthiness, the self in all its mangy glory.

8. The part where he tells his writer friends what their books are really about is insufferable. Even the original recipients must have winced when they got these letters, and it is painful to eavesdrop on them. The chapter is of a piece with Shields' bewildering theory that fiction has a sort of extractable essence. If only Ballard did away with all those drained swimming pools and crashed cars and told us what he really meant about technology and modernity! If only Kafka cut the atmospherics and philosophized! Surely Shields thinks "The Zurau Aphorisms" is Kafka's best book.

9. I realize I am getting carried away here. This is to Shields' credit. He has not instructed but provoked my soul, to paraphrase him paraphrasing Emerson. Ultimately this is a book about the lit David Shields likes, which is stuff I also like. I don't define it the way he does. I resent the sophistries and the posturing. I suspect his argument against fiction is more personal than I understand, much like Franzen's jeremiad against difficult books. But the aesthetics here seem pretty egocentric and narrow in the end. (When you read a novel you are participating in someone else's imagined reality, and it amazes me that someone so averse to this generous, beautiful act would comment on fiction at all.) However, "Reality Hunger" is a seriously intended book and it should provoke a serious debate. Let's stop essentially blurbing this book -- it's been blurbed more than enough already -- and actually discuss it.

Do me a favor and stab my eyes out with a screwdriver, thanks.
By Reader in Virginia
"Reality Hunger: a Manifesto" combines extreme intelligence with extreme silliness, tiresome tech-savvy, and self-regarding irony. The result is as tiresome as the character-drive epic novels the author quite rightly disdains. Reading the book is like being held captive by a half-drunk, know-it-all, newly tenured professor holding court at a grad school after-party. He's read everything, knows more than you do, and is bound and determined to bore you to death with every excruciating aside. He loves himself and wants you to love him too. So much of what the author says in this book (published 2010) already sounds outdated and even pass.

Strictly from hunger...
By Wild Bill Jones
I don't know Shields's other books, but based on this one, I'd say he's an ambitious, and pretentious, lightweight. Like many another failed or stalled novelist before him, Shields tries to do an end run around the problem of creating something of value by emitting a "manifesto" of How Literature Should Be. Beware of blowhards bearing rules. He doesn't define his terms clearly, and often his ideas, such as they are, are mutually contradictory.

It boils down to this: he finds traditional narrative boring. He's bored reading it, and, perhaps more significantly, he is bored writing it. He talks about how bored he is with the "traditional form of the novel," as if there is such a thing in a genre that includes "Don Quixote," "Tristram Shandy," "War And Peace," "Nightwood," "Middlemarch," "Bleak House," and any ten other good novels you might name.

This is a gimmicky and ultimately pathetic book, in my opinion. There are already all kinds of genre-bending books out there -- "The Unquiet Grave," by Cyril Connolly, any of Lydia Davis' books, Nicholson Baker's "Vox," "Operation Shylock" by Philip Roth... I mean you could go on all day with such a list. None of these writers needed David Shields to give them permission to do whatever the hell they wanted at the writing desk. This book is basically a desperate and opportunistic attempt by an intellectual poseur to claim some shelf space next to his intellectual betters. Sorry, but that's how I read it.

But if you'd like a much more cut-to-the-chase opinion, check out Shields's appearance on the Colbert Report from mid-April. Colbert (literally) tears him a new one. See how seriously you can take him after his unctuous, self-inflated performance here:

What do you do when your girlfriend's younger brother is the best-looking person on the planet and has a thing for you but he's only sixteen? Parish doesn't know what he's going to do, but he is about to find out. Luke Hartwell, author of Atom Heart John Beloved and other works of fiction, puts together yet another short story that is both charming and sexy. As usual, the narrative voice is winsome, and the story conveys a surprising amount of depth.

Review
Like Hartwell's previous work, "Nothing Strikes Back" is both sexy and charming but also at times blunt and thought-provoking. We like that in literature and are beginning to think no one today is doing it quite as well as Hartwell. When a book makes us smile at times, makes us almost cry at others, but also causes us to contemplate the nature of love and our society's laws forbidding it, we know the author is doing something right. This short but sweet story is another important work from an important writer.

From the Author
I grew up in places much like the fictional town of Weston in my novel Atom Heart John Beloved. I always enjoyed reading books with the gay boy attracted to straight boy dynamic, and several of my stories deal with just that.

Short and Nearly Gratifying
By Mongrelonian
This short story teases more than it satisfies, yet I liked it very much. Parish, the narrator, has a rather dry sense of humor and a fatalistic attitude toward his relationships with girls. One of those girls has a younger brother Parish finds intriguing, and vice versa. The dance they do around each other throughout the story keeps one waiting and wondering. I might have enjoyed a slightly different ending, but the one it has is likely for the best. All in all, it's fine, enjoyable story.

Another great story!
By Amazon Customer
Another great book by Luke Hartwell. I've enjoyed all the material I have read by this author. He has a way of storytelling that makes you feel like you are there experiencing it with the characters. His plots usually involve a gay person and a "straight" person who find out they have more in common than they first believed. This story is no exception and gives great insight into two young mens' thoughts about themselves and how they resolve the situation between them.

I'm addicted to Luke Hartwell's books!
By LenaRibka
It is probably the sweetest and the most NORMAL novel with the most LIKEABLE characters that Luke Hartwell has ever written.

And it was my last in my to-read list of this author.

And I'm sobered and inexpressibly saddened.
