Funny as usual, but a bit out of touch

Jimmy's Boa Bounces Back is yet another frenetic and funny book by Trina
Noble...but more notably...artwork by Steven Kellog. I bought the book for an 8 year old boy who is extremely bright...and he has always loved this series. However, the silliness of a lady's tea party is very out of his sphere and I am not sure how much he enjoyed it. The artwork was complex and expressive as usual, but my little nephew got a much bigger charge out of the newest popular series: "The Wimpy Kid" and spent hours reading and re-reading the first one of those.

Andrew Parr is an Industrial Control Engineer, recently retired from ASW Sheerness Steel, Sheerness, UK who worked in the steel industry for over thirty years. In 1980 he began specializing in sequence and closed loop control systems using Programmable Controllers (PLCs) with hydraulic and pneumatic actuators. He has written fifteen books on electronics and process control including Logic Designers Handbook, Industrial Control Handbook, Programmable Controllers, Control Engineering, along with many amateur- level books, among them Introduction to Operational Amplifiers. His books have been widely translated into many languages, including Japanese, Polish, and Swedish. This third edition, from a new publisher, has a number of attractive new features: More worked examples, more than 200 in all, more exercises with answers, more on modern developments such as asymptotic methods, correction of typographical errors,--- and loving care from the editors at Waveland Press. The result is a much nicer appearance, and high quality pedagogical improvements.-- I have taught from an earlier edition of this very nice book. Both the students and I have been happy with it. It is an important and useful topic in math [both pure and applied] , and it is especially relevant and central to the service courses offered by most math departments. Sample of topics: The Green function method, the equations of heat, and of waves, and the PDEs of Laplace and Poisson. Orthogonal functions and Fourier methods. The method of stationary phase, and the classical Sturm Liouvile problems.-- Pinsky's book is the best text for teaching these classical tools. A nice feature of the new edition is an added section on the use of Mathematica in the study of PDEs. When students need to look up one of the classical formulas in the theory of boundary value problems, I often refer to Pinsky's book which has always been on target.

an FBI sting killed his career...

For more than half a century, Gordon Walgren, lawyer, legislator and
lobbyist, has been a major player in Kitsap County politics. At 25, he won election as county prosecutor. It looked as though his political future was dead after he lost a notorious case. It didn’t help that he was romantically involved with the accused’s mistress. Then opportunity knocked and Walgren quickly re-climbed the political ladder. By 1975 he was Senate majority leader. Five years later, he was clearly ticketed for statewide office, attorney general and then, who knows?

It all came undone as a result of Gamscam, an FBI sting that ensnared
Walgren, the speaker of the house and a lobbyist. Charged with
racketeering, the three were accused of conspiring with men they believed
were mobsters to loosen state gambling laws. They did it for a piece of the
profits, the government said.

The case against Walgren was the thinnest, but a jury convicted
him along with the others. He spent two years in a federal prison.
He never admitted guilt and never stopped fighting to clear his name.
On his release, he successfully petitioned to win back his law license,
to overturn all but one conviction and to rebuild his reputation.

A great historical biography

I really enjoyed this book, being a Washington state and Kitsap County resident. It is an interesting historical account of local and state politics in the 1970’s and '80’s. It also is an autobiography of a remarkable man, Gordon Walgren, who had a meteoric rise before he was stung. Along the way, he hobnobbed with a number of interesting characters, from international leaders to fellow prisoners with mob connections. A delightful and interesting read.
