Nice to have fresh questions to work with after having mastered other sources intended for the Nat Geo Bee. Be warned that this is not an entirely accurate source. Some questions are poorly worded and some refer to areas that are named improperly. For the advance geographer, cross-referencing and using multiple sources will solve this problem to a certain extent.

These questions really helped me in my geography endeavors. Keshav is a great author who made many great questions. The content is very well organized and has many different tips and questions. Overall, this book is great! The questions are easy to study from and can help yu become smarter in no time!

The Knife Man

Wendy Moore is a writer and journalist who specialized in health and medical topics for more than twenty years. She lives in South London. This 2005 trade paperback has a ‘Contents’, sixteen chapters, ‘Chronology’, ‘Notes’, and an ‘Index’. John Hunter was an innovator and maverick who led surgery out of the Dark Ages. He was a true innovator of medical technique, and outlined sound scientific principles for successful transplants. Hunter’s home was used in Robert Louis Stevenson’s story “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. Hunter practiced in the late 18th century, he was one of the best-skilled surgeons in London. Hunter often quarreled with other leading practitioners. Hunter gained his experience from dissecting thousands of human bodies. Many of them were obtained illegally. Chapter 2 has the background and history of surgeon Hunter, and the England of the 18th century.

The problems in getting specimens are listed in Chapter 3. The actual practices in dissecting corpses and preserving specimens are listed in Chapter 4. In the 16th century Andreas Vesalius published his illustrated books on human anatomy. Chapter 5 tells of the medical experiments and controversies of Hunter. John Hunter became an Army surgeon during the Seven Years War (Chapter 6). Soldiers who were shot and untreated recovered better than those who had medical treatment (p.94). Hunter became interested in dentistry and transplanted teeth (Chapter 7). Autopsies became popular to analyze causes of death (Chapter 8). Hunter prospered. Venereal infections were common and provided customers for treatment (Chapter 9). Hunter moved to more spacious grounds for his collections (Chapter 10).

Hunter began a series of lectures that were open to medical students and the public (Chapter 11). These hundreds of students influenced future generations (such as Edward Jenner). Hunter dissected electric eels to describe their hundreds of columns of tightly stacked disks. Was is possible to reanimate a dead person (Chapter 12)? Hunter recommended putting air (or oxygen) into the person’s lungs, or electric shocks as a last resort (de-fibrillation). An eight-foot tall man was exhibited as a curiosity (Chapter 13). The changes in scientific belief in the late 18th century are noted in Chapter 15. Like others, Hunter did not believe in the Biblical accounts of earth’s creation. Chapter 16 tells about the last years of Hunter’s life. As surgeon general he changed the policy to reward merit rather than privilege for surgeons. His peers at St. George’s hospital united against him. Hunter’s angina eventually killed him. His belongings were sold to pay his debts, his family was homeless and penniless. Some of Hunter’s manuscripts were deliberately burned by Everard Home, his last associate. Hunter applied the principles of science to surgery, the techniques that are used today.

This is a very interesting book about a little-known surgeon who revolutionized the practice of surgery. One of his students was Edward Jenner, who created the use of vaccination to prevent smallpox. This saved millions of lives, and also led to a great increase in the population of Europe. This in turn generated immigration to the United States and other countries.

About the Author
J. I. Packer is regarded as one of the most influential evangelicals in North America. He is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and his writings include books such as Knowing God, A Quest for Godliness, Growing in Christ (Crossway) and Rediscovering Holiness. He has preached and lectured widely in Great Britain and North America and served as general editor of the English Standard Version of the Bible published in 2001, and theological editor of the Study Bible version. In 2014, Packer was named Author of the Year by the Association of Logos Bookstores. He is a frequent contributor to and an executive editor of Christianity Today and has written numerous articles published in journals such as Churchman, SouthWestern Journal, Reformation & Revival Journal and Touchstone. He received a BA, MA and PhD from Oxford University.

Carolyn Nystrom (MA, Wheaton College) has written more than eighty books, Bible study guides and children's titles. She served as general editor for the Christian Classics series and she co-authored Guard Us, Guide Us and Praying with theologian J. I. Packer, and Before I Was Born (God's Design for Sex) with Sandra Speidel. In addition to actively serving in her church and community, she has been a foster parent, an elementary schoolteacher and a book editor. About the Author
Brian Catlos spent over a decade living and travelling in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia before completing his PhD (Medieval Studies, Toronto) and joining the History Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a former President of the American Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain, Co-Director of the Mediterranean Seminar, PI of the University of California Multi-Campus Research Project on Mediterranean Studies, an affiliate of the UCLA Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, an associate of Spain's national research council (CSIC), and a member of several journal boards. He has published extensively on religious minorities and Christian-Muslim-Jewish relations in medieval Europe and the Islamic world, and has received numerous grants and awards, including an NEH Faculty Fellowship. His first academic book, The Victors and the Vanquished, was awarded two prizes by the American Historical Association, and recent articles, 'The de Reys' and 'Accursed, Superior Men', won the Bishko Prize and the Webb Prize. In 2009 he was appointed to Religious Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, with cross-appointments in Jewish Studies and Humanities. He appeared in the PBS documentary 'Cities of Light', and writes travel guide books.
