"No one expected such a tiny girl to have a first birthday," begins this inspiring biographical sketch of a legendary track stars. Born in 1940 in Tennessee, the chronically sickly though "lively" Rudolph contracted polio just before her fifth birthday. Though not expected to walk again, the fiercely determined girl persevered with her leg exercises; by the time she was 12, she no longer needed her steel brace. Eight years later, Rudolph represented the U.S. in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, where, despite a twisted ankle, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals during a single Olympic competition. Krull's (Lives of the Musicians) characteristic, conversational style serves her especially well here. Through her words the nearly superhuman Rudolph seems both personable and recognizable. Rendered in acrylic, watercolor and gouache, Caldecott Medalist Diaz's (Smoky Night) imposing, richly hued illustrations have a distinctive, cubist feel. The artist's bold design superimposes this art against sepia-toned photographs of relevant background images: playground sand, wooden fence slats, the gravel of a running track. This juxtaposition yields busy, effectively textured pages, flawed only by the text's curiously embellished font-the letters look as though they have been speckled with either ink blots or dust. Kindergarten-Grade 5?The story of Wilma Rudolph, the prematurely born black child who, despite suffering from polio, became the first woman to win three Olympic gold medals. The narrative could very easily slip into sentimentality. It is to Krull's credit that though her telling is affecting, it is also crisp and matter of fact, very much in the spirit of Rudolph's deep day-to-day determination. However, the real impact of this book lies in the potent melding of powerful prose with Diaz's stunning artwork. His watercolor and acrylic illustrations with definite black outlining create a stained-glass effect, and the paintings themselves are backed on sepia photographs that relate to the text. For example, narrative about Wilma's bus trips to Nashville is matched with an illustration showing the girl and her mother at the back of the bus. This in turn is superimposed over a photograph of a bus tire. Though partially paralyzed by polio as a child, she managed--through indomitable spirit and unlimited determination--to transform herself from a disabled 5-year-old to a world-class runner at age 20, the first woman ever to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. In this biography for younger readers, Krull skillfully demonstrates that in achieving her historic triple victory, Rudolph also claimed victory over three obstacles: a normally crippling illness, growing up African American in the segregated South of the 1940s, and competing in what was then regarded as a men's sport. The never didactic text includes a suspenseful and dramatic retelling of Rudolph's triumphant participation in the 1960 Summer Games in Rome. Enhancing the text are Caldecott medalist Diaz's richly colored, stylized illustrations that--though painted--have the look and permanence of wood carvings. These single-and double-page pictures are set on sepia-tone backgrounds that, like his Caldecott Medal^-winning art for Smokey Night (1994), Diaz assembled and photographed. He has also created a striking new font called Ariel for the display and text type. Both Krull's words and Diaz's illustrations are celebrations of an inspiring life that deserves to be remembered. Running just as fast as she can

Inspirational stories fill hundreds of picture books every year. Most are simply awful. They either tell tales that are loose plots barely supported by facts or they paste together a slapdash concoction of truth and fiction with as little thought as possible. The truly beautiful bio-picture books out there are as rare as hummingbirds in autumn. So it was with great joy that I located "Wilma Unlimited" and found it to be not only inspirational but also a darned good read. Written by Kathleen Krull (the woman who could make long dead musicians fascinating in "Lives of the Musicians" and bring Cesar Chavez to life in the recent "Harvesting Hope") and illustrated by David Diaz the book is the best possible way to introduce kids to one of the world's greatest athletes.

Born in 1940 to a family of twenty-one people (nineteen siblings, no less), Wilma Rudolph was initially a sickly child. Though she was energetic enough, she often caught every disease imaginable. At the age of five, Wilma's left leg twisted inward and it was clear that she'd come down with polio. Still, Wilma was a determined child and she consistently exercised her unruly leg to get stronger. After continual practice, she was finally able to walk free of the leg brace that had weighed her down. At twelve the brace was put away for good and Wilma started participating in sports. She led her high school basketball team to the finals, catching the eye of a college coach. Before you knew it, Wilma was recruited into the Tennessee State University's track-and-field team on a full ride scholarship. In 1960 she competed in the Olympic Games in Rome. The book sets this part up beautifully. Wilma arrived with a twisted ankle into a place filled with television cameras (the first time they ever filmed the Olympics), the place "shimmering heat", and her competition consisting of runners who had run faster races than she ever had. Then Wilma proceeds to win one... two... three gold medals! The last medal is especially dramatic, hinging on the moment when Wilma drops her baton and STILL beats the other runners in the 400-meter relay. The last double page spread in this book shows Wilma standing, "tall and still, like a queen", earning the last of her three medals. It's a truly proud moment for all who have the privilege to experience it once again in picture book form.

Krull has a way with words. I'm not saying that Wilma Rudolph's life is dull. Far from it. But in the hands of a lesser author this story could easily have been bogged down in all the wrong moments. This author knows which moments should be given full glory. The moment when Wilma removes her brace and walks proudly into church will banish from your mind that similar pseudo-inspirational moment in "Forrest Gump". Wilma's struggle at the Olympics through pain and skepticism puts the reader through the same strains. You yearn for this woman to beat them and beat 'em she does. Then, best of all, come the illustrations of David Diaz. This is my first Diaz experience, though I suspect that I'll read many more of his books as the days go on. Diaz has accompanied his illustrations in this tale with sepia toned photographs. The book's endpapers display the outlines of footprints in the dirt. The title page is an evocative view of ivy climbing a raw wooden fence. Behind his colorful illustrations, each background photograph refers to the corresponding scene obliquely. When Wilma and her mother take the bus to the hospital, the photograph is a close-up of a wheel. When she packs away her leg brace, it's shredded packing paper. A great relief it is indeed that the colored illustrations are worthy of their sepia compatriots. Though these pictures may appear blunt at first, they are filled with the most delicate of designs. I loved watching the character of Wilma as she aged. As she grows in confidence, her posture improves and back stiffens until, by the last shot, she is standing taller than all the women around her. Than all the women in the world.

"Wilma Unlimited" should be known to everyone living in American today. This is inspirational without being either annoying or faux-patriotic. It's an actual honest-to-goodness amazing story. The book is beautiful and its story is worthy of its packaging. I challenge you to read it and not shake your head at least once in amazement. It's just that good.

Walk with Wilma

I liked Wilma Unlimited becuase Wilma had a lot of courage to do whats right. One way Wilma had courage was she took off her leg brace and walked in front of church. I liked how Wilma was a hero, for example, when she got in the world Olympic races and won them. I liked it when Wilma did what she wanted for example, when she played basketball for the first time. I also liked how the book kept on going until Wilma died. Read the book because it's great!

I have used Wilman Unlimited in my classroom for the past few years. It is a fantastic book to use any time during the year, but good for Black History Month also. I use it with fourth graders to teach sequencing and analyzing character. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent, Well Written Introduction to Old Testament (History)

Disclaimer: I do know one of the authors of this book personally, but I nonetheless stand by this review as an accurate and unbiased testament to its merits.

I bought this book after having contacted one of the author's and asking for some specific insight into their area of expertise. It goes without saying that they were perhaps motivated to suggest this book to me because their name was on it, but I find the material that's included here good "despite" that. The book is straightforward, well written, and easy to understand. At places, it's entertaining - something that can't be said for all academic works.

The book is obviously a textbook, but that makes it a good source when researching and the like. It's an excellent reference book that also illuminates particulars in ancient Isreal and surrounding areas.

The books thematic approach takes a bit to get used to, but once you've learned how that works, it's - again - straightforward. These "themes" help to make the book a lot easier to read. Although I wouldn't call it a "page turner," it is interesting for some "nighttime" reading.

I do have some criticisms about the book, though.
1.) The cover seems rather flimsy for a book of this size. It would be better served by either a hardback cover or a sturdier paperback cover. I'm thinking I might have to get the book recovered in hardcover because it's already showing signs of heavy wear even though I haven't really used the book too extensively.
2.) The book does a good job trying to appease all sides of the polarized political spectrum that has taken hold of modern society, but it makes for reading that seems a bit problematic. I doubt this was the goal at all, but at times you might ask yourself - in some places - if this problem could have been avoided by "politically charged" terminology. It might have made the book seem more "resolute" on particular issues/points.
3.) I would be nice if the book were printed on different paper with colored pictures. There are many illustrations that could be enhanced 100x if they were color. This would assuredly affect the price of the book, but the overall quality of this work - which is already good - would be improved greatly with color illustrations.

Overall, a recommend this book to anyone with questions about Old Testament history and the cultural situation of ancient Israel and surrounding areas.

Had a Hard Time Putting the Book Down

Four contributors have co-written this book which covers much of the cultural background of the Hebrew Bible. Coming at it from the New Testament I found the book to be very informative and helpful. I continue to struggle with the chapter on 'Job' but that may be more my problem than that of the authors.

Challenging and informative in a combination of assertions, questions, helpful footnotes and bibliography.

About the Author

Jeffrey J. Selingo has written about higher education for two decades. He is a regular contributor to the Washington Post and is the author of two previous books, College (Un)bound and MOOC U. He is the former editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education. His writing has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Slate, and he has appeared on ABC, CNN, PBS, and NPR. there is life outside of college

“Our twentieth-century education system is woefully out of sync with this twenty-first century economy that demands highly knowledgeable and flexible workers.” This quote from the introduction of Life After College perfectly sums up the entire book. To simplify this quote, education is woefully out of sync.

When I graduated college Myspace was the reigning champion in social media. Facebook, at the time, was a hobby or diversion for a few college students. Today, Myspace is a memory and Facebook dominates not just social media but our entire online experience. Rapid technological innovations and global market change everything we know almost constantly. Businesses and organizations cannot keep up. Education, from kindergarten to graduate schools, lag behind even farther.

Life After College is really about promoting education outside of college. Selingo introduces the reader to the importance of gap years, bridge programs, on-the-job training, internships, geographic advantages and so forth.

College is not the final straw anymore. It may be a very important straw, but it is not the final one. Gone are the days when simply getting a college degree guarantees you economic stability. With a growing number on college graduates and competition from people around the world, a college graduate needs to show up with more than a fancy diploma. “What you do in college is more important that where you go to college” (215).

I enjoyed this book a lot. Selingo knows his stuff and his writing is impeccable. I’m not fan of gap years and bridge programs. I think these programs only highlight the change needed in higher education. Additionally, I am not a supporter of gap years because I know without a doubt that a gap year would have been detrimental for me. Delaying formal education would have been a bad idea for me. Even though I changed my major three times in college and my career goals a dozen times, college still gave me the structure and space I needed to succeed.

My favorite piece in the book is the chapter on employers. Usually we hear about how employers are frustrated at their new hirers, so it was great to hear how employers are also lost and unprepared.

I am always disappointed when I read about students choosing a college or a career and there is very little discussion about passion or higher calling. Finding a job that pays well is important, but finding a job that employs your strengths, empowers your soul, and inspires your passion is absolutely vital. That's why I really enjoyed the last chapter of the book describing your career story.

This is a great book with amazing information.

Clear and thoughtful guidebook for today's daunting system of higher education

This is a practical and thorough handbook for students who are applying to college--or already in college, though it offer its greatest benefits to those who are still in the dizzying, fearful stages of figuring out where they want to apply. Selingo is smart, informed, and measured, avoiding alarmist warnings and unfeasible prescriptions in favor of lucid facts and thoughtful reasoning. If you are a parent who wants a state-of-the-art assessment of the best strategies for how to approach college that takes into account the importance of cultivating your child's individuality as well as the best opportunities for career development, then you can't do better then Selingo's clear-eyed account.

This book is a must read for anyone who is stuck on what route they should take after high school. It doesn't give you a specific answer however it gives options along with real life examples. This book is for parents, college students and motivated high schoolers.

Nuclear engineer Mahaffey’s Atomic Awakening (2009) presented an engaging history of nuclear energy that came close to offering a ringing endorsement for its continued widespread use. Although his latest work focuses mostly on radioactivity’s dark side, from its discovery in 1896 to its role in the recent Fukushima meltdown, Mahaffey nonetheless does argue persuasively that, by closely investigating its shortcomings, nuclear power can be made safer. Mahaffey begins with an episode of radiation poisoning that occurred in an Ozarks cave where hunters were exposed to radon gas, and offers a survey of nuclear weapons development, including the troubling disappearance of several H-bombs, before addressing history’s most famous nuclear accidents. Exciting, entertaining and educational review of the development of nuclear power

This book, a gift from its author, was much more interesting than I expected it to be. It's a fascinating account of the many things that have gone wrong in our quest for development of atomic power. Written in an entertaining and often humorous style, it reveals what we have learned from our mistakes, only to find new mistakes to make. Unexpectedly exciting, but perhaps unavoidably including much technical detail, one is left with a great appreciation of the pioneers of nuclear energy. We are also left with a cautious optimism for the future of nuclear power. I was very surprised that much of this information is public knowledge. Also, one is left with a profound respect for neutrons.

An Amazing Feat! Gripping!

One would think that a book detailing the history of nuclear/atomic accidents, with lots of technical detail, would likely be of interest only to the most devoted nuclear/reactor physicists/engineers. Not so in this case! Certainly there are a lot technical descriptions of how reactors and other apparatus are made and how they operate, as well as play-by-play descriptions of how the various accidents occurred and their aftermaths. The descriptions are clear, most specialized terms are explained and the events leading to the various disasters are told in a most captivating way. But in my view, what makes this book so special is the author’s writing style, particularly his careful choice of words when describing the events that transpired: wittiness, tongue-in-cheek narratives, subtle sarcasm, etc. I often found myself laughing out loud at the way the author presents some of his material. Because of all of this, at least in part, I believe that this book can be enjoyed by a fairly broad readership.

One might expect that a tome like such as this one would contain a number of mistakes – editorial or otherwise. I must admit that I found very few. Other than a couple of misprints, i.e., on page 12, radium-266 should be radium 226 and on page 283, cesium-167 should be cesium-137, I did find one error of greater significance which may of interest to nit-pickers like me: footnote 82 at the bottom of page 99 is incorrect. In particular, the roentgen (R) and the rem are entirely different quantities. Very briefly, the roentgen applies only to X-ray and gamma-ray photons and is defined in terms of the ionization of air, i.e., the absolute value of the total charge of the ions of one sign produced per unit mass of air. Roentgens can be converted to rads (or rems) to human tissue using appropriate conversion factors whose values depend on the energy of the incident photons.

Overall, I believe that this book is a major contribution to the literature that describes various aspects of the nuclear field, which has often been perceived by the general public as being disturbing and obscure, in understandable, relatively jargon-free, language. It puts various nuclear accidents into perspective and makes the structure and operation of several nuclear devices more widely accessible.

Crash Course in Nuclear History & Dynamics

I totally loved this book, which sounds odd considering the topic; but it is so educational, so diligently researched, and well-written that it is actually entertaining. As a child of the Korean Conflict and Cold War, anything atomic has always been a hot topic for me. The author's research has been exceptionally deep and wide-ranging, and I feel as if I've just finished a year's university course in the topic; that's how much I've learned.

A Superb learning Text for SketchUp as Applied to Woodworking!

I used to use high end 3-D CAD software on my job. When I retired I wanted a replacement that didn't cost a bundle. I tried using the free program SketchUp but the tutorials were not easy to follow or apply to hobby woodworking. I decided to make one more try and went looking for a good book. Thankfully I stumbled onto this one, and it is superb. Exactly geared to learn and master the software for the amateur or more advanced craftsman. The step by step instruction builds and challenges the student, and the format makes it simple to go back and retread the parts that need reinforcement. Excellent from every perspective. If CAD for woodworking is what you want, you must get this book!

A great way to learn the ways and workings of SketchUp even if you are not a woodworker.

This book is well calibrated for new SketchUp users of normal intelligence and is a great follow on to the four "Getting Started" videos posted on the SketchUp learning center website.

Until recently there have not been many good books on SketchUp, so I learned the program primarily from YouTube, but I sure wish I had this book four years ago when I started out. It would have saved hours of frustration. Mr. Zeh has written an outstanding guide to the program, giving the beginner and even more advanced users valuable advice on how to configure the workspace, and manage the workflow as well as how to draw.

Mr. Zeh provides a brief introduction, and then, in chapter one, gives thorough instructions on how to download and install the program. He guides you through setting up the workspace and tool bars for efficient work. His instructions work with the free and the pro versions of SketchUp 2014, 2015, and 2016, so no worries about whether your software matches the book. This book is written for the Windows version, but the differences between it and the Mac version are slight, so no worries there either.

Chapter 02 gives a concise explanation of most of the tools in SketchUp and is a section I keep bookmarked for reference. I've filled it with sticky notes and marginalia, but it is probably not a chapter you will read from beginning to end.

Part 2 of the book contains 7 chapters that guide the reader through the drawing of a simple bedside table. Each chapter focuses on a different component of the table and each component is used as a vehicle for teaching more and better techniques, so that while you might have already discovered better and faster ways to perform a particular task, it makes sense to follow his instructions. Likely you will learn something new.

Chapter 03 is crammed full of information and work habit training which will convert you from a halting beginner, hashing your way through a drawing project, to a quick and confident draftsman. Readers with SOME SketchUp experience may bridle a bit at the painstaking ways he has you draw four simple table legs, but in later chapters, it suddenly becomes clear why he took such pains as the program begins to sing for you. It is the most challenging chapter in the book, but once you are through it, you will know a huge fraction of the things you need to know to draw efficiently, and the remaining chapters will go quickly.

Chapter 04 proceeds with the aprons and drawer rails of the table and introduces the drawing techniques to create them. The following chapters bring in additional components and the additional techniques you need to draw them. In the end, you get a set of accurate measured drawings you can take into the shop.

My recommendation? Order this book today and then go to the SketchUp website and download the program. While you are waiting for this book to arrive, work through the four "Getting Started" videos on the SketchUp website. This will leave you primed and raring to go when Mr. Zeh's book arrives.

When the book does arrive, read chapter one and set up your workspace as instructed. Skim Chapter 2 and relate the contents to what you learned from the videos. Then, step away from the computer, sit down, and read chapter 3 all the way through. After that, go back to the computer and complete each of the drawings. If you make mistakes, don't sweat it. Electrons are cheap, so start a new file and give it another go.

Mr. Zeh suggests that once you complete each chapter, go back and redraw until you can complete the drawing from memory. I think that is great advice. It took me a couple of hours to get through Chapter 2 the first time, about 15 minutes the second, and under five the third time. Subsequent chapters went much faster and while I have not yet finished the book, I am drawing much faster and I am able to create much more complex forms quickly and with confidence.

I am currently teaching an introduction to SketchUp to my middle school shop students and once I had this book in hand, I substantially rewrote the curriculum and greatly raised my expectations of what I expected them to learn in a 4 weeks. I think adults who learn from this book will be able to nail SketchUp to the floor in maybe two long weekends.

Watching a master designer at work

As a woodworker who has used Sketchup to design products such as chests, tables, shelving, built-ins, I still found this book useful. I taught myself Sketchup and found, comparing my ways with the way Zeh designs which he demonstrates step by illustrates step, that while I had found ways to do what I needed to do, there are more efficient and elegant steps. I could do without the occasional schoolmasterly tone, but the book interestingly explains simple click by simple click and move by move how best to design with Sketchup, in this case a bedside table. I learned a lot. A good investment of my time and money.
