Brilliant, empirically supported approach

Dr. Stosny has hit a grand slam home run, again. The healing approach in this book grows from the same fertile bed of research and clinical experience that made his boot camp for resentment, anger and abuse reduction so successful. It focuses on a betrayed person claiming and creating for him or herself a Healing Identity. This changes a betrayed person from a victim to an empowered person able to successfully choose improvement, healing, repair, recovery and growth over pain, suffering and shame. Betrayal can cause the betrayed person to feel inadequate and unlovable, the admission of which is too painful to admit. Stosny, as in the boot camp, provides practical steps that replace that loss of worth or value with ways to value yourself more, so much so that external adversity cannot touch the core of one's value. Stosny goes on to provide very wise counsel and steps when one betrayed seeks to love again, either in a new relationship, or in rebuilding a betrayed relationship. This reviewer is a marriage counselor, who has used Dr. Stosny's approach, now wonderfully set forth in this book, with many couples over the past years. It works, and works very effectively. This book is easily accessible by non-clinically trained readers, as it is written for the betrayed partner. Counselors and therapists will find it a valuable resource to grow their skills in helping couples and to give to couples with whom they work. This reviewer cannot recommend this book more highly. It warrants wide distribution to both audiences: couples and clinicians.

I liked it - but several weak areas

This was a helpful read with a really valuable and important premise. However, if you have history of trauma, this book should be used in conjunction with professional help. I really like the idea of building a healing identity and investing in your core value as a path to healing. Some things I thought were lacking: 1) the traumatic nature of betrayal was inadequately dealt with 2) self-compassion is a vital part of the recommendations in this book but it was not fleshed out well 3) there is was not enough instruction on how to help yourself when you feel vulnerable emotions. That being said I've gained something quite useful from reading this book and would recommend reading this while working with a professional. Betrayal is rarely something that can be worked through on your own.

This book gave me a lot of useful ideas and exercises that I can put in place now to heal and recover from my spouses infidelity. It has helped me to focus more on the future and how I can move forward rather than obsess about the past.

Suggestions

If you have found this book and are thinking about purchasing, you may have a child like mine. If so, I am writing this review to you - other parents go elsewhere! lol - I think this book is going to save my son's life. He sits for HOURS to do five minutes, and I do mean five minutes worth of homework. It makes me BAT CRAP crazy!! Like Home Simpson choking Bart crazy. This is part II of what is going to save his life this year at school. There is really great advice in each chapter. And here is where it gets hard for you parents - YOU HAVE TO READ, highlight, take notes and THINK about how you are going to CONSISTENTLY apply what SOAR is telling you. I set time aside to go through one chapter at a time - perfectly easy and do-able. I read through the book twice. And now I am going to have my son read through the relevant parts that I think will help him. (He's ten going into 5th grade - already at a disadvantage because of his VERY young age - I know, I know.)

Part I that will save your child's life is to pick up John Rosemand's book on Homework - you can find it here - "Ending the Homework Hassle" or something close to that. BAM! This book will give you the swift and sturdy kick in YOU THE PARENT'S butt. Couple it with the suggestions in the SOAR book and life will beging to come together for your family. John Rosemand will give you the courage to let your kid fail BIG and the SOAR book will give you the tools to teach your child how to remedy his (or her) big failure at school.

Just Good Stuff!

Purchased this for my 14-year old as she enters high school. Hoping to help her identify study/comprehension skills that will be great tools to use in her high school career. She is doing the exercises and reading it without any direction from me! She even presented me with one of the challenges on observation. This has been a plus for her summertime reading. Hopefully it will help her in this next chapter.

I would recommend this book to parents looking to give their kids the tools to be successful.

Nimble and Suitably Detailed Handling of a Complex Topic!

Once the individual investor begins to grasp the complexity of convertible bonds, it beats me as to why he or she would not be inclined to give up the entire enterprise altogether. And this book is so chock full of a convertible maven's essential vitamins and minerals that, after the first reading at least, this investment arena will seem utterly Pyrrhic to a neophyte. Sadly, the book is dense enough that a newcomer is likely to miss its nimble, understated handling of a maddeningly complex topic. It is only after perusing the other available literature on convertibles that Kevin Connolly's competent, intelligent handling dawns on you. Then you see this text as a high-end stereo system amongst crude boom boxes!
Although Connolly writes under the pretext the reader knows next to nothing about the convertible, or even senior debt and common equity instruments, the book may not be the optimal starting point to understand convertibles. For the American reader, there is also the matter that the examples are in pounds sterling, and not in dollars.
But the text provides a terrific point-of-entry for the investor who is left wanting by crude convertible pricing models which fail to adequately account for subtler, but critical, details such as embedded long-put options, refix clauses, and what one ought to do with probability issues. The implicit theme of the book is "every convertible is a different animal...accept it and get nimble enough to competently deal with the instrument's intricacies." The reader is well served --with the theme, the non-condescending explanation, and the tools Connolly offers to deal competently and confidently with convertible complexities.

Useful, practical, essential, but MORE Please!

Connolly has written a useful, practical book for those who are attempting to price these (increasingly) complex instruments. For more abstract or academic treatments of the topic, seek other sources and the innumerable academic journals of quant finance. But for a nut-work �gotta-price-this-bugger-�cause-my-boss-asked-me-to-and-I�m-the-quant-guy-in-the-shop� this guide, while not strictly a �cookbook,� is indispensable. Although it begins at a relatively basic level, it clearly and concisely explains every technique from the simple (y = mx + b) and then step-by-step ratchets up to the Excel-samuri level (MIN and MAX tests after multiple operations of option pricing trees (bi-nomial and tri-nomial)).
I limited my rating to four stars, however, because Connolly only mentions in passing the available (expensive) software-house products that do many of the same things his example spreadsheets do. Fin software needs critics, and I can think of no one better placed than the author to examine them and give front-line quant analysts his views.
In addition, like most worker bees, I try never to reinvent the wheel (programming in C++ and VB or anything else for this kinda thing is undiluted soul-destroying tedium), but at the same time want to thoroughly check out the foundational theory and techniques someone applied before I risk my career on someone else�s work. In this case, a good list of the academic sources and current financial literature on the topic would have been a useful and welcome addition to this slender volume.
I suppose a final criticism is that we have all seen the exponential growth of credit derivatives in the past few years. Connolly�s next edition will need to address the topic of credit derivatives in relation to convertible bonds, as their use in combination with CBs provides alternate hedging, investment, and speculative strategies not explicitly considered in this book.

Excellent.

This is a very good book. Connolly starts from the beginning, assuming you know nothing, but accelerates at just the right rate to hang on to beginners and not to annoy people who already know the basics. Admittedly, if you're a quant you'll know all this stuff (anyway, if you're already a quant you shouldn't need to buy a book on the subject in the first place). If you're not a quant, it's a fine introduction to how to model convertibles. In fact, there's enough information here for you to have a go at writing your own toy model that takes into account most of the complexities of CBs (including puts and resets), although you'd be a trifle crazy - or extremely confident - to start trading off a model you implemented *only* having read this book.
This is an excellent book for anyone who is a user of CB models, who understands the inputs and outputs, and who wants to know more about what's going on inside the model "black box".

Okay, but one of the weaker collections recently read.

Among the short story collections that I’ve read recently, Dangerous Games was unfortunately one that I enjoyed less. While certainly not a poor showing, I personally found most of the stories going in styles or directions that simply weren’t my favorite. This may be from the luck of the draw. I don’t love everything and in the game of collection readings there are going to be some that just don’t fit. It may also arise from the theme of the title, which limits the stories somewhat, where most fit into the description literally with characters in some dire scenario of competition. There is less here of internal struggle than one might find in a general collection or with another given theme.

“Big Man”, by Chuck Wendig opens the book with a story that was a superb choice for lead-off hitter. It sets the tone with a bit of darkness to accompany that ‘danger’ and presents a present day horror without flowery adornment with a very readable voice. It also introduces a common theme of making circumstances of the horror/fantasy open to reader interpretation.

While I enjoyed this start well enough the next series of stories made it more difficult for me to get into things. Lovecraftian stories (like Moreno-Garcia’s) elude me, perhaps I really just need to take the time and read some of his classic works. Lavie Tidhar is an author who I find hit or miss, and here the miss arises from a similar sense of the story not packing enough of a punch or depth despite well handled language; similarly, Sriduandkaew at times connects, but I often get lost in her dense word spinning web. This one (or duo of tales) just confused me despite reading twice.

This trend of the stories being okay but not really resonating with me in terms of the plot, action, or underlying theme continued through the comic by Northfield and beyond. I cannot comment at all on “Captain Zzapp…” at all. An eReader is simply useless to me for being able to resolve a comic’s panels or text.

Eventually I came to a pair of stories I really did adore, “Death Pool”, by Melanie Tem and “The Bone Man’s Bride”, by Hillary Monahan. These each had a strong sinister factor mixed with underlying themes/character psychology that connected with me, mental health in the case of addiction in the case of the former, and sacrifice/servitude in the latter. “Loser” which follows soon after had a similar dark tone with strong characterization to deal with a troubling subject that I found impressive.

“Two Sit Down, One Stands Up”, a spin on Russian Roulette, no pun intended :) was the one more literal take on a game that kept me fully interested in as a tale, mostly because I was eager to see how it turned out. And as I enjoyed her Gifts for the One Who Comes After, I loved the mystique and mood of Helen Marshall’s story. However, while I loved the style and feel of the words on my brain, the plot left less of a mark as notable.

And that situation is somewhat emblematic of many of the other stories here, there may have been an elements that I enjoyed, but other aspects of the given work failed to engage me and that one aspect that hit just wasn’t strong enough to carry everything. In the end your reaction to this, like many collections will come down to personal preference and is harder to predict. But if the theme of Dangerous Games sounds interesting to you and you know a large chunk of these authors as ones you’ve liked before then it’s worth a try.

Worth a gamble

Oliver edits a strong anthology that is solidly entertaining. Nothing brilliant here but there is a nice level of clever storytelling tying into the general theme of games and gaming. Oddly enough something I have never quite gotten into in the speculative aspect of entertainment. Yet that category is likely the motivating tie for the authors who manage to subvert some ideas on the matter wuite nicely. And in a few cases, weirdly. Paul Kearney and Pat Cadigan had the strongest entries for me but I suspect some of the others that I found ran too dark have a wider audience.

Dangerous games

This collection of stories by various authors, is edited by Jonathan Oliver, who has edited horror anthologies. That may be why there are so many dark, weird and plain horror stories included. I don't read horror so my rating will not be the same as that of a horror fan.

The good stories for me in this volume are:
South Mountain by Northern Irish author Paul Kearney, who wrote A Different Kingdom and other fantasy novels. This short considers some keen American Civil War re-enactors who somehow take a wrong turning. Setting detail is excellent.

The Game Changer by Libby McGuigan. I wasn't familiar with her work, but really enjoyed this tale of a computer game, desperate parents and a terminally ill child who is determined to win his game.

I also liked a comic strip by Gary Northfield - when is a game not a game?
If you are just into SF&F like me, buy the book for the above stories. The rest are not pleasant. But if you like horror you'll be okay with that.

Kathryn Best is a designer, consultant, educator and author. She runs courses in design, strategy and innovation for academia and industry, specialising in interdisciplinary and collaborative working methods. Kathryn's current research interest is in the potential of design and design thinking as a tool for innovation and change in the context of business, society, culture and the environment.

Fantastic Guide, Great Value for Money.

I found the book's interdisciplinary approach to design management enlightening and refreshing. The author offers discussion, ideas and examples through case studies which I found useful when looking at product design, services and the business environment. This would be useful to anyone who designs or works within a company using design.
The layout of the book is fantastic for students; you are able to dip in and out of each relevant section with ease. The layout, use of images/tables/charts, and colour coding of pages also really helps. This is really useful when you're trying to reach a deadline and working under pressure. I can imagine this is also useful when working in a practice.
Each area of discussion in the book is filled with case studies, which I found really useful for putting the discussions into context. The examples are `of the moment' and international in variety. I found this really encouraged me to think outside the box. These case studies are clarified in relevance by the author who consistently uses leading specialists in each area.
For someone who knew little about the subject before reading, I found the language and form of the chapters easily comprehendible. Although I have to say that as I researched the subject further I found this title was still the one I returned to most. I think this was partly because of its ease of use. All in all I think this is an excellent value for money book. You truly get every penny's worth.

Easy to understand informative book

The book explains terms used in the design industry/ business and explains the connection between different sectors of design, business etc so we can understand their relationship and how they work together. Examples of the topic are given for example in the form of case studies of people/ companies throughout the globe eg. Zipcar (alternative to car owning) and talks about why the business is attractive to customers and from an environmental point of view, the user experience etc.

The book also talks about many other topics eg. how emotional design and other methods draw people to purchase an object or encourage users to utilise a service, and also what make it user friendly to interact with and enjoyable to use. Having done Product Design at university we studies this and I found it interesting. Another topic is a list of project planning areas and also reasons why projects fail.

The information in this book is vast but split into chapters and clearly set out so it's easy to read and understand. I think this is a useful tool for anyone in the creative industries and is an enjoyable and informative read with colourful images and diagrams. Even someone who studied a design field before can learn something valuable from this book.

Reads like a PowerPoint presentation...

This book is a challenge. Each paragraph, although having technically well-written sentences, reads like a text slide from a presentation. The case examples feel like ads and the designer profiles are tepid continuations of the main text itself. The book doesn't really say anything of value to the reader; it never takes a position or takes you on a journey. The content itself is largely akin to an anthropologist just describing simplistic parts of the whole (i.e. that being design exists in business and vice versa) without any judgment or perspective. There is little to no take away, no perspective or voice, and you'll find yourself asking not what, but if, you had read anything the paragraph prior. It's not that this book is bad, it's just not anything: informational, useful, engaging, insightful, driven, inspiring. None of them. Look elsewhere to develop or be informed. Good luck!
