How to get rich, slowly with dividends.
By Clif Purkiser
Let me be upfront, I am a fan of dividend investing in general and Josh's Morningstar Dividend Investor Newsletter in particular. As an early retiree I have been struggling with a way to have enough income to enjoy life, while protecting my nest egg from the ravages of inflation.

I think this is a valuable book for the intermediate or advance investor to own for two reasons. First, while dividend investing has become somewhat trendy in the last couple of years, there hasn't been much in depth analysis of why dividends matter. Secondly, the truly outstanding portion of the Dividend Playbook is it teaches the average investor how to search out and evaluate dividend stocks, and figure out which are likely to be good investments. Overall, the Playbook is the rare business book that does a better job teaching you how to catch fish, than making the case why you should eat fish!

Target Audience.
I think anybody who is a current or potential M* Dividend Investor Newsletter subscriber would be crazy not to buy this book, it is a fraction of the cost of the newsletter, and makes the newsletter much more valuable. I'd also commend it to any do it yourself stock picker. I think it would be valuable people looking at purchasing dividend ETF like DVY or mutual funds. A beginning investor who isn't really comfortable with terms like Return on Equity, or an index fund investor, or 401K investor doesn't really need it.

Why dividends?
Josh quickly nailed my biggest problem as a retiree depending on an equity heavy (80%) investor. It is awfully hard to figure out when to buy a stock and even harder to know when to sell. I think even for a pure index fund investor with a 50% stock/bond mix who is rebalancing his portfolio in Jan 2008, must be uneasy with recent market volatility. I am sure many ask themselves, do I really want to buy more stocks? They have gone down a lot in the last couple of months. For the individual stock investor figuring out which stocks are overpriced and what is underpriced is way to much work. According to Josh, the beauty of the dividend income approach is by relying on income you are letting the stock do the work for you. As long as the companies keep paying dividends and they continue to grow there is no need to worry about how manic depressive Mr. Market feels about your stocks today or tomorrow.

The first few of chapters make the case for dividend investing being superior. I was most interested in Professor Jeremy Siegel (of Stocks for the Long Run fame) study of the top 100 highest yielding stocks in the S&P 500 earning an average of 14.3% annually while the lowest 100 yielding making only 9.5% annually between 1958 and 2003. Several other shorter term (10-25 years) studies were also cited showing the superiority of dividend investing. One of my main criticism of the book, is I don't think nearly enough time was devoted (only few pages out of 335) to bolstering Josh's claim "There's no good reason an investor needs to own any non dividend paying stock at all". Not only would Google shareholders disagree but so would Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. I'd love to see a great deal of more effort to examining historical studies of dividend investing.

His philosophical case for why dividends are good for shareholders is quite strong. Imagine a company which makes $200 million in profit. It can reinvest $100 million in it is core business which has historically earn 20% on equity, there is also a $100 million opportunity to acquire another business which if all goes well may earn 15%, In the absence of dividends, both projects are likely to be funded. As we all know the number of can't miss acquisitions which have flopped is huge. If on the other hand, the company has historically paid out $100 million in dividends management is likely to pass on the risky acquisitions. One particularly interesting insight was the case against share paybacks. All too often management announces buybacks but don't follow through, even more troubling is share buybacks award EX shareholders not the existing loyal shareholders. If management want to keep stable base of shareholder dividends are a much better approach.

The Dividend Drill
The meat of the book is in Mr. Peter approach to evaluating dividend stocks which he calls the Dividend Drill. The drill is familiar to his newsletter readers, but I never completely understood it until reading the book. The simplest part is the insight that the total return of a stock is equal to the current dividend yield + dividend growth rate. Thus a stock currently yields 4% and has been growing dividends at 6% in the past and is likely to do so in the future its long term total return is 6%+4%=10%. Johnson and Johnson is a classic example with a yield which has been around 2% for most of the last 30 years, but with a dividend growth rate of 14%. The total return on JNJ including reinvesting dividends has been 16% over a 30 year period. Many other stocks have shown strong correlation between dividend yield+growth and total return; examples include Utilities like Con Ed with 5.5% yield and 1% growth rate and Realty Income (O) with a 7% yield and 3.7% div growth rate.

The crux of the dividend drill is evaluating a dividend stock on three critical elements; is the dividend safe, can the dividend grow, and what's the return? There is high school level math involved and balance sheet 101 knowledge is definitely needed (I have an MBA so I pass!), however it isn't very complex. Mr. Peters does a good job of providing concrete examples and nice step by step explanation.

Dividend safety is a relatively simple calculation; do the projected earnings exceed next year's dividend by a comfortable margin? Josh explains that the safety margins (aka payout ratio) for a cyclical industry need to be considerable higher than a natural gas pipeline company. Will it grow is probably the most difficult calculation to make. There are numerous things to consider, management's commitment to growing dividends, the core potential growth rate, obviously microchip companies have a higher potential growth rate than potato chips companies, and small companies better potential than large companies. Future earnings growth and return on equity are also factors.

Josh then discusses how to calculate total return and emphasis the importance of setting hurdles. In general Josh finds a sweet stock with stocks yielding between 4-7%. Stocks yielding above say 9% are at risk of having a dividend cut, stocks yielding 2% or below require very high growth rates. This sweet spot is important to retirees because a 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate requires growth at the rate of inflation. If Mr. Bear market or Sub prime Scandal comes along and cuts the price of your 4% dividend payer by 25% you can pretty much ride out the market with your income intact. On the other hand, the yields aren't so high that a dividend cut is likely because of dropping earnings. Overall Josh is looking for companies which will provide a total return in the 9-11% only a couple of percent higher than his 8% total return estimate for the overall market going forward. (FYI, pretty much in line with Buffett and others estimates.) Still a 1-2% reliable return over the market translates into a hefty increase in disposal income for a retiree or near retiree.

The final chapters of the books discuss managing a dividend portfolio. He gives some helpful advice about picking a target income need and designing a portfolio around that. Not surprisingly the portfolio construction is very similar to the M* dividend investor newsletter portfolio. The lack of diversification (e.g. heavy emphasis on financial) could be worrisome to some investor. However, there is something to be said about Mr. Peters, Warren Buffett, and Marty Whitman, argument that it is better to own 10 stocks you know than 500 you don't know. One of my other criticisms of the book is that the all important discussion of when to sell is definitely glossed over.

Some of the most valuable section of the books is the 6 appendixes, which discuss the mechanism of dividend payments, tax treatments, and investing in Utilities, Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs), REITs, and Bank Stocks, respectively. The last three areas are particularly good places to look to find high yielding dividend stocks. However, they require an additional approach to evaluating the potential returns. I was particular pleased with these appendix, because having learned the basics of fishing, it is very helpful to learn the tricks involved in fly fish, ocean fishing, and bass fishing, because the more you know the less chance you have of going hungry!

Overall, I am much more confident about investing in dividend stocks thanks to this book. I intend to continue to emphasis individual dividend stocks, for the non-index portion of my portfolio.

Hindsight is 20/20
By Munir F. Bhatti
Although published in 2008, the content in this book (judging by the included information in the text, tables and charts) was authored through 2006. In 2006 and 2007 the markets rose. In 2008, it plateaued and--later that year--it fell off a cliff as we entered the worst worldwide economic downturn in 70 years. As of 2010, the market has recovered a great deal but many companies were nonetheless critically damaged or forced into bankruptcy. With the benefit of hindsight, we can examine the central thesis, particular methods, and specific recommendations of this book and see how well they have held up over the past 4 years. Given the severity of the decline, this should indicate how well the ideas and investment methods would hold up in hard times in general, and therefore how dependable this strategy would be for investing.

What is the central thesis? Josh Peters' compelling idea is that one can purchase companies that pay dependable and growing dividends. These dividends should grow faster than inflation, allowing the investor to depend on stable and growing income during retirement. It's an alluring thesis, and one that seemed highly plausible in 2006. However, of the thousands of companies screened and approximately 26 selected using the authors sophisticated Dividend Drill Return Model, a fairly high proportion have declined in value 30%, 50%, or even 95% while cutting the dividend in half, decimating the dividend, or eliminating the dividend entirely. To use Mythbusters' terminology, we can safely declare the central thesis--that one should retire on dividend paying companies rather than bonds--busted.

In fact, as I write this in early 2010, retirees who were invested primarily in bonds are the ones with dependable income and intact retirement portfolios that are able to swoop into the market and purchase nice retirement villas in Florida, Arizona, and other retirement havens. Bonds would appear to survive hard times far, far better than dividend paying stocks, both generally and specifically those highlighted in the two portfolios mentioned in the book.

The only exception is the consumer staples stocks that Mr. Peters selected--and, actually, consumer staples in general. This sector didn't decline too much, has mostly recovered, and has kept paying its dividend and raising its dividend along the way. Provided that one rejects the other recommended industries and companies (banks, REITs, energy MLPs, and utilities) and limits oneself to consumer staples, then the thesis appears confirmed for this special case.

This is no small point. The book goes to great lengths to recommend banks, real estate investment trusts, energy master limited partnerships, and utilities as industries from which you can mine gems that will pay dependable and growing dividends. If you actually go and compare the stocks highlighted and recommended in 2006 versus their performance over the next four years and their condition today, the insolvency, losses and dividend cuts are enough to strike fear and cold sober reality into the heart of any investor or retiree.

The fact that so many of the selected companies and their industries tanked, not in the distant future, but in less than 5 years also draws into question the forward-looking power of the Dividend Drill Return Model (DDRM) introduced and discussed prominently throughout the work. Peters places great emphasis of the forward-looking power of the method. Given the utter failure to see huge investment losses and dividend cuts just three and one-half to four years later, however, we must conclude that the model has no meaningful forecasting ability.

Having swallowed these bitter pills, the reader can nonetheless find much of value in the work. Mr. Peters' discussion of how companies decided to pay and raise dividends, the use of the DDRM to determine to what extent share buybacks will be possible, and the discussion of the tax treatment of different types of dividend-paying investments are presentations that are rare in investment literature. He is also to be commended for warning investors that it can be better to take the dividends from a company and reinvest them manually in undervalued issues rather than automatically reinvesting in the company that paid them. In this regard, the book and the appendices are valuable information for those serious about seeking to aggregate wealth via capital gains and dividends.

The book also contains advertisement-like language for Morningstar and the Dividend Investor Newsletter. Since I generally regard Morningstar and Josh Peters favorably, I didn't mind this too much. However, it is a bit annoying. If the methods in the book are wonderful and useful, then people will naturally gravitate to the newsletter and Morningstar and there is no reason to plug it so emphatically.

Finally, to some degree the book tries to be a guide in how to beat the market. This is an old saw for investment books and, in this case, the book is not deep enough nor value-focused enough to succeed in doing this. If you plug in the model portfolios, you will see that this is not an approach that will beat the market or even provide dependable dividends.

We can now rate the book:

Central thesis (retire on dividends): one star (busted)
Modified thesis (restrict oneself to consumer staples): five stars (confirmed)
Forward-looking power of DDRM: two stars (many companies that performed will in the DDRM ended up cutting or eliminating the dividend)
Informative nature of DDRM: four stars (forces you to think about the inner workings of the company)
General information on dividend-paying investments: five stars
A way to beat the market: two stars
An advertisement for Morningstar and DividendInvestor: one star

Overall, I rate the book three stars. I hope that, in the years ahead, Mr. Peters can modify and update this book. In the meantime, I would recommend 'The Future for Investors' by Jeremy Siegel as one that takes the modified thesis and runs with it in a way that is useful for value investors, those seeking dividends, and those seeking amazing investment returns.

Dividends: Income for Life
By mostserene1
Like Clif, I am an early retiree who relies on dividends for an (in my case, modest) income stream. I disclose this so the reader can place this review in perspective. The thesis of this book coincided with my own investing philosophy, so I anticipated both friendly and familiar ground, but the author argued persuasively the advantages of dividend-paying stock strategy over alternatives, and he provided sufficient detail on the analysis of the dividend aspect of equities to improve my knowledge in this area.

The book's thrust is that you may be better off receiving income via dividends than regularly selling off stocks from your portfolio or relying on fixed income instruments. Moreover, even if you are a long-term investor looking for a modicum of growth and not only immediate income, the author confirms the value-investing maxim that div-payers tend to perform better than non-div stocks over the long term.

And to me perhaps the most convincing construction, also proposed by the book Active Value Investing, is that if you are going to own a stock and that stock's performance is flat or down for relatively long periods of time (say, during range-bound or bear markets), would you not want the stock to pay you for holding it in the meantime?

The author uses a variety of methods to analyze how to select dividend-payers that are likely to continue paying, and increasing, their dividends. He focuses on ROE vice cash flow, and explains why. He also reveals his own portfolio. One nit-pick is the promotion of his newsletter, which is common among investing authors but nonetheless detracts a bit from the point being made.

It is worth noting that this book was put to bed mid-2007, so his fairly unalloyed praise of REITs should be viewed in that context. He does somewhat presciently warn on the risks of bank dividends. Naturally, the principles of dividend investing apply, generally, regardless of the prevailing market condition, and the author also correctly cautions against the tendency to chase the highest dividend yields at any particular time rather than looking at a stock's dividend yield/growth history and other relevant factors.

Many financial advisors and institutions recommend either singly or in combination the fixed income (bonds, annuities) or "sell x% of your stock portfolio each year" method of generating investment income streams. The author offers the dividend-stream approach as an equally viable consideration for the long-term investor.

And finally, what the reader should expect from this book is less a list of what stocks to buy than "here's how to pick solid dividend-paying stocks, and here are the ones I selected."

From the author of Men Explain Things to Me – “A landmark book that gives impassioned challenge to the social meaning of disasters” (The New York Times Book Review)

"The freshest, deepest, most optimistic account of human nature I've come across in years."
-Bill McKibben

Chosen as a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Post, and Chicago Tribune

The most startling thing about disasters, according to award-winning author Rebecca Solnit, is not merely that so many people rise to the occasion, but that they do so with joy. That joy reveals an ordinarily unmet yearning for community, purposefulness, and meaningful work that disaster often provides. A Paradise Built in Hell is an investigation of the moments of altruism, resourcefulness, and generosity that arise amid disaster's grief and disruption and considers their implications for everyday life. It points to a new vision of what society could become-one that is less authoritarian and fearful, more collaborative and local.

From Publishers Weekly
Natural and man-made disasters can be utopias that showcase human solidarity and point the way to a freer society, according this stimulating contrarian study. Solnit (River of Shadows) reproves civil defense planners, media alarmists and Hollywood directors who insist that disasters produce terrified mobs prone to looting, murder and cannibalism unless controlled by armed force and government expertise. Surveying disasters from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, she shows that the typical response to calamity is spontaneous altruism, self-organization and mutual aid, with neighbors and strangers calmly rescuing, feeding and housing each other. Indeed, the main problem in such emergencies, she contends, is the elite panic of officials who clamp down with National Guardsmen and stifling regulations. Solnit falters when she generalizes her populist brief into an anarchist critique of everyday society that lapses into fuzzy what-ifs and uplifting volunteer testimonials. Still, this vividly written, cogently argued book makes a compelling—and timely—case for the ability of ordinary people to collectively surmount the direst of challenges. (Sept.)

Review
"Thought-provoking . . . captivating and compelling . . . there's a hopeful, optimistic, even contagious quality to this superb book."
--Los Angeles Times

"In her far-reaching and large-spirited new book, Solnit argues that disasters are opportunities as well as oppressions, each one a summons to rediscover the powerful engagement and joy of genuine altruism, civic life, grassroots community, and meaningful work."
--San Francisco Chronicle

"Stirring . . . fascinating . . . presents a withering critique of modern capitalist society by examining five catastrophes . . . Her account of these events are so stirring that her book is worth reading for its storytelling alone. . . . [An] exciting and important contribution to our understanding of ourselves."
--The Washington Post

Good ideas, but not nuanced
By Beaux
This is a great book and Solnit is a VERY good writer. Her basic premise is spot on, and accurate as far as I have seen. Where I have to disagree with her and rate it at 2 stars is that she sees nothing beyond her agenda. It seems that she takes every example she encounters and turns it into a proof of her premise. She hammers and hammers her ideas, without any space to allow for the possibility that there may be people who have a different experience that falls outside her premise. Some people act badly during crisis. Most rise to the occasion. Some don't. I would like to see space for a variety of experience in this very important book. I gave it 2 stars because it is one sided, but it is an important take on the presumptions of people who plan for disaster and should be required reading at FEMA and Homeland Security. That'll be the day.

You should buy it if you think people are opportunists who will riot at any chance they get. It will open your eyes to an alternate truth. Just be prepared for one perspective only.

Everyone Should Read This Book -- Perhaps Especially Public Officials
By Elizabeth L. Seaton Frankfort
Rebecca Skolnit's book should become important to us, because we already seem to be working our way through what could well become a whole series of disasters and catastrophes (thanks to the author for clarifying the distinction).

It seems sociologists have been studying disasters for decades, and they've determined that in the face of sudden disaster, histories of specific events show that *the assumption that a collapse of the structures of authority and official response will result in mob behavior* is in terrible error -- it's a myth, an urban legend. Instead, it seems that our neighbors are much more likely to act altruistically and creatively. They are most likely to rapidly improvise ways to effect rescue, meet immediate needs and organize ad hoc encampments and communities that support survival and safety. Describing these grassroots social spaces and the negative reaction of authorities with a clear voice and generous dollops of humor and irony, Skolnit sees in these self-generated kitchens and aid stations a beautiful hint of what our lives could be, if left to our own devices. I love her voice -- and she's a riveting storyteller.

On the other hand, the elites have left behind a marked, bloody history of foolish decisions, well-armed panic and overreaction, fed by a dangerous mythology of looting mobs. Skolnit has confirmed something that should be obvious to those of us who remember the lies we were fed by the media, later disproved: there's a difference between "requisitioning needed supplies" in an emergency and "opportunistic theft", which constitutes looting. Time and again, it seems elites have deployed martial forces against a population struggling to survive, help not particularly on the way.

I loved reading the accounts of people's responses to Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy in comparison to events much earlier in the century, like The San Francisco Earthquake and the explosion of munitions in Halifax -- healthy, heroic parallels that are moving to read. It was good to see the heroism of women and underprivileged youngsters acknowledged. It was good to trace the philosophical underpinnings of our respective stances -- for and against 'the mob'. Initially interested in another of this author's titles, I HAD to read this one first, having been a first responder in years gone by. It spoke to my experience of bystanders' readiness to be of help -- or at least, to bear caring witness.

PS -- Presently, I've got a student who, until recently, was studying to be a cop. This goal was called into question by events in Ferguson and the on-going struggle along the border -- but even more by *the increasingly general militarization of the police*. This is something he doesn't want to be a part of, so he's changed his major to sociology, without particularly knowing where to go with it. I'm thinking of buying my student this book. Maybe it will help him clarify things.

Changing Our Paradigm
By Moon Cat
Everyone in Los Angeles needs to read this book before the next big earthquake. In fact, all Americans should be reading this book to counteract the myth of the rioting, murderous, panicking, selfish people who will go berserk during a disaster and need the government and troops to control them and restore order. When the actual disasters are studied, as in this amazing book, the reality is that people come together in close community and direct their own rescue, survival and distribution of resources with a feeling of altruism, generosity, self-sacrifice, and love. As you read through you see that most of the panicking and selfish behavior is coming from the Elites and the government who are greatly disturbed by the people getting along without them. Often when they do intervene it is to the detriment of the devastated community, and sociologists refer to it as "Elite Panic".

Disasters covered include the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the Mexico City Earthquake, the Managua Nicaragua Earthquake, New York City 9/11, and New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina amongst other disasters. Unfortunately for Hollywood Movies, Anya Rand followers, and selfish promoters of I will survive at your expense, the general public is humane, helpful, and caring. The apocalypse, world disasters and other fear based mythology about the animal nature of mankind surging out to destroy civilization is just that: a useful tool for legitimizing government power. Read this book and perhaps we can replace the myth with the truth of our species. We are social, loving, caring and function best as community groups. It is in relationship to others that we find our value.

Amazon.com Review
A standard text for database designers and programmers, Database: Principles, Programming, and Performance is out in a new edition. This latest version of the detailed work of the O'Neils includes a new chapter on Object-Relational Structured Query Language (SQL) and its implementations in Oracle and Informix products. On top of that, the authors have revised their chapters on basic and advanced SQL, and added product-specific details (particularly having to do with Oracle, Informix, and IBM DB2 database products) to most areas of their coverage. As a result of these revisions, this book does a great job of balancing academic material with practical examples.

Furthermore, this book does a good job of straddling the schism that's begun to open up in the world of database architecture. Perhaps better than any other volume, this book documents the emerging object-relational strategy for representing data fairly, although most of the authors' coverage (as is fitting) goes to the more firmly established and better-supported relational database model. The authors' style intersperses sequences of theory-oriented prose and diagrams with queries and other listings that have to do with specific implementations, allowing readers to observe many of the phenomena described here. This book is a fine picture of the state of the art, painted with influences from business as well as information science. --David Wall

Topics covered: Modern database design and operation, including basic Structured Query Language (SQL), Object-Relational SQL and the object-relational model, indexing, query parsing, and performance-minded design.

Review
"The chapter on object-relational database should be a great selling point for the book. No one else has the coverage on object relational that this chapter has; for example, the other new texts emphasize the purely object model. I think that the approach here is much more practical."
—Betty Salzberg, Northeastern University

"The coverage of this book is wonderful, especially the cutting-edge of object-relational systems . . . [and] this is the only text I have seen that is not by Jeffrey Ullman that treats the theoretical material appropriately. The chapter on dependencies and relational design is excellent. Examples abound, the explanations are crisp and clear, and the appropriate concepts are discussed. I cannot wait to use it."
—Bill Grosky, Wayne State University

"This book makes an excellent text for anyone just approaching database systems. It's both an accessible refresher for those of us who have not been paying careful attention to developments in this area and a useful reference for designers and implementers who need just-in-time education."
—Jim Gray, Microsoft Research

"This book is excellent!"

A book for the lowest common denominator Oracle aspirer
By angel.white
Damning Factors:

1) The book completely ignores that there are other DB's than Oracle, DB2, and Informix. No MySQL, no PosgreSQL, no SQLite, no CouchDB (okay, PostgreSQL gets a 1 paragraph head nod on page 177).

2) This book is made for the lowest possible set of people who might be interested in the subject. If you have any knowledge, or are decently intuitive, then you'll tear your hair out with this book.

For example, if you know any programming, you realize that primitive variables (ie int) always have a value. In the DB, though, they can be null (meaning there is no value), so a primitive int cannot represent all values the DB may store. To accommodate this, you submit a second variable, essentially a boolean to hold whether or not the value is null. Pretty straight forward, right? I figured it out in the first paragraph of the section, but 5 paragraphs later they still hadn't gotten around to saying it. I looked at the code example, it fit my conclusion, so then I tried to skim the massive quantity of text to try and find where they said it, to verify my intuition. It took me several minutes, because they split it across several paragraphs.

That is the problem with this book, really. It is verbose, it is tedious, there is so much text, and even if you know what you want, and you know where the book talks about it, you still have a lot of difficulty getting that information out of the book.

Maybe if you were brand new to programming, brand new to databases, had very little intuition, and really needed to read every paragraph, this would be a good book. But if you're really in that boat, shouldn't you spend some time learning about programming first?

As a result of this writing style, **IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO USE THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE**

3) They spend a lot of time talking about Relational Algebra, which is a complete waste of time since it is purely academic, noone actually uses it. On top of that, switching mindsets from Relational Algebra to SQL is a bit rough, because you approach querying in very different ways, thus you must think about the problem in very different ways (it's like those video games where you eat the bad mushroom that switches your keys to the opposite directions). But the most annoying thing is that they talk about it like it's super complicated, but all it is is set theory. If they said "it's set theory, the same thing you learned in discrete math, here's the syntax" then they could have dispensed with it in a week, but because it's aimed at the lowest common denominator, it drug on for a month.

4) This book approaches writing programs that deal with the DB in a poor way, IMO. They use C, a static language that can't anticipate run-time differences, and would require a huge amount of infrastructure to even be able to comprehend your schema (the structure of your DB). To get around this, they use an absolutely wretched bug-ridden code generator called PRO*C, which needs to nanny your entire application in order to work right, extremely limiting. C is a completely horrible language for this type of application, something even halfway dynamic would have been infinitely better, and something object oriented seems almost necessary. My group of 3 members spent over 80 hours in a period of two extremely frustrating days trying to get PRO*C to work correctly (almost 15 hours each day of misery), before we finally decided to abandon the book / instructor's approach, and switch languages / frameworks altogether.

5) The thing is seriously enormous. After a while I quit bringing it to school with me, because it would make my shoulder ache carrying it in my bag.

-----

Redeeming Factors:

1) There were a large number of examples. They weren't always good examples, usually they didn't show what I needed (too simple), but there were quite a few, which was something at least.

2) They showed the EBNF of the SQL statements, which most of the time, between the EBNF and the simplistic examples was enough for me to figure out how to do what I was wanting to do, if not, a little experimenting / googling to supplement the book.

3) There really is a lot of information in there. It's hard to get out of the book, and it will take way longer than it should to learn, but it seems to hit a fairly significant portion of relevant information.

Wordy, redundant, tedious, still a good coverage
By A Customer
I agree that this book could be well resumed in 300 pages. Too much text, too few figures. For instance, when you make a classification or an enumeration of things that have long definitions, it is a good idea to organize them in a bullet-list or numbered list or something similar, instead of just plain text. If you constanly fail to use such synthetic representations, the result is made of large chunks of plain text, hard to read, tedious, redundant.
Also, you can use more visual indicators that give you an instant information about various pieces of text: bold text, spaces, various font sizes and shapes, icons, etc, so that the reader can focus on particular sections of such a big book. They call it Readability, and it's far from being great here.
There are also some points left unfinished: when you read "The first idea would be to...", you expect that the second idea follows sometime. Well, there are exceptions in this book.
I like the idea of mixing theory with industry examples in the same book, but please make a clear separation. Sometimes I can't say whether a particular sentence refers to such a real system or it is a theoretical statement.
In conclusion, this book features a good coverage of the subject but also a lack of organization and readability.

A book you'll keep as a reference
By G. Stark
After looking at the books used by the local LA Universities and Colleges to teach the subject, I felt very sad for the CS, and IT students of these schools. Lectures are one thing, having a good textbook is the other. It's the great textbook that doesn't go back for a refund after the quarters over. All I could find where books on Access programming. "Learn Access in 21 days", just does not do justice to Normalization theory. Books on SQL seem only to rehash syntax and provide the occasional example. I looked all over for a book that hit on the important topics a programmer, DB Analysts, or DB Administrator needs to know independent of the platform. Ample theory is presented here in an understandable way so those key concepts can be used to develop solutions to real world problems.

A Fun Read.
By Jason T
An entertaining book that will be enjoyed by anyone interested in mathematical logic or computation theory. Davis weaves history, anecdote, and mathematics into an exciting sketch of the major developments in mathematical logic and their role in the development of the computer. He does a commendable job in explaining the mathematics in an accessible fashion, without distorting it by over-simplification. A good book for people new to the field as well as those already familiar with these stories.

The Universal Computer
By GREVIEWS
Dr. Martin Davis' book is excellent! It starts out to be biographies of seven great mathematicians/logicians, but is so much more. You get inside the heads of these great men, but you also learn about their lives, the world in which they lived, world history, and the mathematics that they developed. Dr. Davis has a way of presenting the math in a style that practically anyone can understand with a little effort. Also, Dr. Davis adds anecdotes about some of the men in his book because he knew them or heard them speak. Also, Dr. Davis is a math/logic professor with many years of experience. The book presents the material so the reader feels like he's reading an exciting story. The book is exciting and energetic. For anyone with an interest in science or math, computers, technology, this is a worthwhile read. Students entering college would especially benefit from the book as it might give their course of study some new meaning and provide additional motivation to learn and achieve.

Key Muscles of Yoga
By College Girl
This book is fantastic! Have both Vol I & II, and they are invaluable for anyone wanting to learn about yoga, being healthier, or any nursing or med, or physical therapy student.
The book shows which muscles are involved in each yoga move - the ones working, being stretched, or supporting the body weight. For anyone in medicine, this also breaks down movements into steps and illustrates why the patient is in pain with that movement. For anyone in physical therapy, is illustrates why you need to do that excerise & shows how it will help you.
As a student in a yoga teacher training class, this helps me learn how to do the poses correctly and which muscles are working with each pose and how to avoid stressing injuried body parts. Fantastic reading and a great resource!

Beautifully illustrated anatomy reference - only uses Sanskrit names
By Erin
As someone with a very scientific mind, sometimes I get frustrated with the vague terms that get used during normal yoga classes. I was looking for a book that got into the really technical anatomical details, and I found it. This book is a beautifully illustrated anatomy reference that should be helpful for yogis, fitness instructors, physical therapists, or anyone who is just curious about how their muscles and bones work together in different poses. The only complaint I have is that all the poses in the book are described using only the Sanskrit names. I’m familiar with some of the names, but I spend a fair bit of time googling the ones I don’t know to figure out the Americanized name for the asana while reading this book.

Perfect Anatomy Book for the Beginner
By ThePerpetualStudent
I have many anatomy books after completing my 200hr yoga training this fall. While there are many wonderful texts out there, The Key Muscles of Yoga Vol. I is the best for the beginner. The computer generated illustrations are comprehensive and the minimal text really gets the main points across. Another benefit for the person new to anatomy is that the bones and muscles of each major group are covered with reference to the movement they make in various yoga poses. Additionally, because this written by an MD, the technical language is there but it's not scary and provides a great introduction to learning the proper movement terms.

Highly recommend this for the person new to either yoga, anatomy or both!

Review

From the reviews of the second edition:

“This highly anticipated second edition … is a very complete review of animal behavior concepts related to insects. … The book includes 28 detailed case studies that explore several specific situations (laboratory and/or field research), along with the methodology used. … contains 173 black-and-white figures and 45 color plates. The Matthews’ highly didactic writing style makes this book useful to researchers, students, and even laypersons interested in the topic. … Summing Up: Recommended. All libraries.” (J. M. Gonzalez, Choice, Vol. 47 (11), July, 2010)

“For anyone studying or interested in animal behaviour or insects, this is a must-have reference book. … Each chapter is … split into sub-divisions that help locate relevant information quickly. … Numerous case studies include a handful new to this edition, focusing on research relevant to the associated text. … As a comprehensive reference book, I would recommend this text to teachers and undergraduates in the field of animal biology, ecology, entomology and anyone interested in insects or animal behaviour.” (Janet Preece, The Biologist, Vol. 58 (2), 2011)

From the Back Cover

For thirty years, Insect Behavior served as students’ sole overview of a field of study that is growing exponentially. Considerably updated and expanded, this second edition still retains its constructive balance between modern developments and historical insights, between new examples and old, between empirical work and theory, and between pertinent conclusions and the dynamic field and laboratory experiences from which such discoveries arise. Twenty-six case studies, 45 new color plates and 173 figures (over 40% of them new)add richness to the well-written, accessible text.
