About the Author
Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag burst onto the art scene in 2013 when his first series of paintings were shared on the Internet, and has since become something of a phenomena in the art and sci-fi communities. His original blend of naturalistic landscape paintings with science-fiction elements and a very low-key recollection of growing up in the ’80s struck a chord, not just in Sweden, but all over the world. The Verge, Wired, IO9, Scientific American, and The Guardian have all praised his work. But until late 2014, the only place you could watch his art was in digital form on the Internet. Stålenhag splits his time between a small cabin at Mälaröarna (the setting that inspires his work) and an apartment in Stockholm.

More than just amazing artwork

Tales from the Loop quickly became one of my favorite books when I finally got my hands on it earlier this year. As soon as Things from the Flood came up for preorder I put my order in. I was extremely excited to get it a couple of weeks before I expected it. While not quite up to the amazing standard of the first book, this is still amazing. The artwork never disappoints, and the story continues to surprise and be engaging, elevating this above just a book of pretty pictures.

If you loved the first book, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. If you don't have Tales from the Loop, get that first, then buy this!

A Return to the New Past

I first came across Stålenhag’s art through IMGUR. Several months later it then reappeared on my Pinterest feed and from that moment onward I was hooked. Go figure of course that it would be another year before I found out that Stålenhag managed to get his artwork published and made into this amazing collection. Who would have thought that there was a storyline to accompany the art…as if we needed words amongst such exquisite paintings, but go figure the story hooks you…almost more so. Regardless if you make this purchase for the story or art; just buy the book! Each page is a snapshot into an alternate Earth where technology after the Second World War took a breathtaking and terrifying turn. We of course (as the reader) can only view of snippet of this world through the eyes of a young boy growing up among all these technological wonder (specifically during the 1980’s)…it’s all truly amazing. Things from the Flood is the continuation of Stålenhag’s first collection and only adds to the world his art and words have created.

I have both Tales from the Loop as well as Things from the Flood, and they both are incredible. I absolutely love the world that has been built, and am excited to see where it goes from here. The artwork is great, and so is the storyline. If you are unfamiliar with the artist's work then you are in for a treat.

Although it also contains extensive analyses of some existing methods, it has no intention whatsoever to be a complete overview of the field: the text would show too much bias towards my own algorithms. I rather present new material and own insights in the questions involved with wavelet based noise reduction. On the other hand, the presented material does cover a whole range of methodologies, and in that sense, the book may serve as an introduction into the domain of wavelet smoothing. Throughout the text, three main properties show up ever again: sparsity, locality and multiresolution. Nearly all wavelet based methods exploit at least one of these properties in some or the other way. These notes present research results of the Belgian Programme on Interuniver� sity Poles of Attraction, initiated by the Belgian State, Prime Minister's Office for Science, Technology and Culture. The scientific responsibility rests with me. My research was financed by a grant (1995 - 1999) from the Flemish Institute for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Research in the Industry (IWT).

Good but the original version with the blue cover better

It's hard to give this book less than 5 stars because I highly recommend it and it can completely change your life. I originally read the version with the blue cover which I found out later is apparently the one that wasn't edited after Yogananda's death. Many years later I repurchased this red cover version because it came with the free CD and I figured.. how different can it be? Well, it is very different. The pictures are different. It has more recent pictures of what is apparently the newer leaders of SRF after Yogananda's death. Some of the amazing older pics from the original book were removed which is just heartbreaking for me. I can tell it just isn't the same vibration. I wasn't getting the same feel. So a few days into it, I put the book down and just bit the bullet, got over my penny pinching self, and re-ordered the blue version. I would say, if you are interested more in the SRF organization, buy this one. If you want the more original version that Yogananda himself wrote, get the blue one. The blue version is also free online, I downloaded it, but nothing like having a book in your hands. Especially one that has a healing vibrational quality to it.

I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers

As an instructor of world religions, I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers, whether their commentaries on Vedic literature or their own autobiographies. Paramahansa Yogananda's autobiography is a splendid work guaranteed to hold the interested reader in rapt attention.

One feature of this work that I especially appreciate is its humor. The yogi is self-effacing and wry, and he approaches profoundly spiritual and meaningful subjects and experiences with a lightness of heart that keeps his narrative on the earthly plane even while inspiring the reader to transcend mundane realities. The text presents the timeless teachings of ancient India in a way that is accessible and attractive to a modern Western reader.

Paramahansa Yogananda was truly an enlightened soul who sought guidance from truth-tellers, whether his own mentors or the divine. In his commentary on the New Testament, he wrote that the teachings of Jesus Christ "reveal the perfect unity that exists among the revelations of the Christian Bible, the Bhagavad Gita of India, and all other time-tested true scriptures." In his trademark gentle way, Paramahansa Yogananda reverenced the teachings of all who spoke truth and taught love.

Through this autobiography, we learn not only about the life and teaching of Paramahansa Yogananda but also of yogis and others who directly mentored or otherwise inspired him -- Nagendra Nath Bhaduri ("The Levitating Saint"), J.C. Bose, Ram Gopal Muzumdar ("The Sleepless Saint"), Babaji (The "Yogi-Christ of Modern India"), Therese Neumann ("The Catholic Stigmatist") and many others. And through the many characters introduced to us in these pages, we learn the wisdom of the Indian ages.

This book (and other worthy titles) comes from the Self-Realization Fellowship, which the author founded in 1920s. This particular edition is the one to buy, because it includes the author's additions to the original 1946 edition and other elements not in the first edition.

This book is to my spirit what a cool swim is on a hot summer day. I revel in its refreshment and revivification.

The Autobiography of a Yogi is a book that has allowed me to know as much about myself, as the world-around-me has inspired me to be compassionate. The book is beyond words. It reveals not only the tremendous experiences of its author, Paranhansa Yogananda, but all beings as simply God. It’s now that I long to live face to face with the great masters, experience miracles first hand, and above all be Love; and above all be Peace. This book has epically changed my life in every way. The stories of the ancient Hindu epics are profound. Yogananda as well seems so similar to my own. Although I didn’t run away from home many times seeking enlightenment, I truly understand his longing. Also, we have the same birthday, January 5th. . His story gives me hope that one day a young boy seeking truth can find it, and God can flow through him as he dreamed as a child, and final the gates of heaven, the Infinite will open, and flood the with ecstatic bliss. As well, I most desire to help the world, to teach others what I have discovered and experienced, and like Yogananda help them find their own. To wite books to live in far off places, to travel the world, do anything and everything, and in turn feed my soul
I have learned to look at the swaying grass, a smile, the sky, silence, in a whole new way- to not only appreciate things, but love them. Thank you Master Yogananda for great wisdom and open hands, so that we all may know and receive the goodness of all life. I would recommend this book to any looking for a greater purpose, and a truth they know is there, but may need help finding it.

My First Manga

This is my first real manga and while my husband and I are fans of the show and I was super excited to get this, I wasn't sure how I would like it. Aside from the newspaper funnies, Garfield books, and Poke'mon comics, I have never really delved into stuff like this. It was a little challenging reminding myself to read in the opposite direction, but I finally got the hang of it.

Plot:

It's pretty much like the anime so far but it showed more back story so it was still new and fresh. I liked the little fun sections like character history and how-to-draw pages. Sometimes it was a little hard to tell what was going on because there was so much happening in a panel, but overall I got the gist of it and the story itself is interesting. Zolo (Zorro) especially has an interesting back story.

Setting:

The overall setting of One Piece, when piracy is in it's golden age, is always fun.

Characters:

So far the characters are just like in the anime, though Zorro is called "Zolo" here. Not sure if I will ever be able to get over that change.

Anyway, Luffy is just as funny in this, Zolo (Zorro) is his typical smartass self, and Nami is mischievous. I did like Koby a little better here. I find him super annoying in the show.

Relationships:

I liked seeing more of Luffy and Shank's history in this.

It was also neat to see how Luffy won over Koby and Zolo (Zorro).

Writing/Voice:

Overall enjoyable lines, a few made me a chuckle.

Ending:

Made me immediately order the next book. Because while I know what happens in the show, it's a little different and I want to see it in manga form.

Overall, this was a great first manga to try. Now I'm hooked! There's a ton of books in this series so I will be busy for a while. It was a different experience but since I love reading and art, I definitely enjoyed it. Being a fan of the anime helped. I ordered the next two books so hopefully I will get to them soon, too!

Fun Series, English translations suck, though.

I bought this one as part of the set of 25 because I am a fan of the anime and decided I wanted something to read. I am glad took the plunge and hope that they sell a second set for the same price since it saves about 30 USD. I am enjoying seeing how the drawings started out and how they have changed over the course of time. This is a fun series.

I will comment, on a comment another commenter made with regards to Zoro's name being written Zolo in this series. I agree with that individual since it's written Zoro in the Japanese anime series, as well as on the translations on Crunchyroll. I have to say, come on. Zoro is a swordsman, and Zoro is so close to Zorro that it clearly should have the R instead of the L.

With regards to other things that are a little 'off' thus far in my reading (I am only on volume 8 at this time), a translation of "I decline your declination" is way too out of character for Luffy. I'd be surprised if he even knew what the word declination means, so the translation of "I refuse your refusal" is a much better translation. The other issue I seem to have is that instead of a translation of Going Merry, which is what is clearly stated in the anime, the translation in this series cuts off the 'Going' part and keeps the Merry-go instead. In the original manga the ship is called, ゴーイング・メリー号, which is Going-Merry-go. I've never been too keen on how English mucks up translations and such, but the least they can do is follow the original to the closest proximity.

Aside from those little gripes, I am enjoying the series. It's definitely not one for everyone, but it clearly has some good points and is popular for a reason.
