About the Author

Jung Han Choi holds a BS and MS from the Sogang University, Seoul, Korea, and Dr.-Ing from the Technische Universit�t M�nchen, Germany. He currently works on high-data-bit-rate transmitter and receiver circuits, active/passive device modeling, and network analyzer measurement at the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany. He previously served as a research scientist in the Institute for High-Frequency Engineering at the Technische Universit�t M�nchen, and was with the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology and the Samsung Digital Media and Communication Research Center. In 2003, he received the EEEfCOM Innovation Prize for his contribution to the development of a high-speed receiver circuit.

About the Author

Richard Plant was born in Frankfurt and was a graduate of the University of Basel, where he earned his Ph.D. Since emigrating to the United States in 1938, he has contributed numerous articles to many publications, and teaches at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

The Pink Triangle Revisited

It has been many years since I had read this book for the first time and I found it very interesting and very sad as I did the first time I had read it. I had read this book in the late 1980's when it first came out, it had been a ground breaking book about a forgotten group of people that were persecuted in the concentration camps of Germany, and in some ways the general public in the conquered territories of the Third Reich. This group was of course, the wearer of the pink triangle, in other words, the homosexual population of Germany.

What had struck me this time while reading it was how little things have changed. The author had written back then how little is said about the plight of people who were branded homosexual, and it seems that this is still a subject rarely broached today in books written about World War II. While there is a handful of books written about this subject, it obviously comes no where close to the amount of material written about the atrocities committed against the Jews, gypsies, clericals, and Jehovah Witnesses. These atrocities at the hands of the SS and other police agencies were horrific and widespread in all captured Nazi territories. No one seemed to come to the defense of homosexuals, not even their families. This was a tragedy to read about.

While this is a complex social issue to this day, it seems that society has forgotten the people who suffered horribly, and the subject needs more indepth coverage then this rather brief book. This is a good start, but I am sure there are many stories that are yet to be told. The fact that the author could only find a few poeple that would speak on the record about what they experienced, (with changed names), speaks volumes about how homosexuallity was viewed in the post war period. You could still be "branded with the pink star" in society, and lose your job, lose your friends, and lose face if people found out you were a homosexual. There were people who had very little sympathy for gays then, and even today, its a touchy subject in 2013 for some.

The last chapter of this book was interesting, the author talks about his personal experience seeking out friends who were either Jews or homosexuals in Germany after the war. This book seemed like a personal writing assignment for him in every way. In some ways, its refreshing to see such emotions written into a book that's suppose to be a historical writtings, and on the other hand, some might find the author a little to emotional for a historian. Historians are taught to write without personal feelings, and to look at every thing from a detached point of view, while capturing and reporting truths, no matter where your research takes you. This historian admits that this is a very personal issue for him to do that, and I admire his tenacity to defend why he wrote this book in this manner.

Finally, very interesting and enlightening if you are not familiar with the plight of the homosexual in the war. I think you will find it worth reading.

proud to be gay

this book gave a sense of pride to know that those that came before me suffered the injustice of murder and slave labor in the camps. the memorial that was build for those that were murdered in the camps im proud to be a gay man today and I thank them that suffered so I can be free of persecution and live in the land of the free and home of the brave may they rest in peace and may god bless all who die in the camps and at the hands of the Nazis.

An incredible book revealing a forgotten past of discrimination and bigotry unmatched by anything since towards a group of people who even today are easy targets of the same discrimination that kept them imprisoned by the WW2 era Nazis long after the liberation of other inmates and concentration camp survivors.

I hope that she is working on a new edition as much has changed since this book was published in 2007. Still, it's a good place to get a lot of information in readable form. She is great at integrating the science with personal stories that bring the issues to life.

Gracefully written, meticulously researched, compassionately reported, this is a Sorcerer's Apprentice story of technology that has vastly outstripped anyone's judgment. For once, the problem is not political or corporate corruption -- the failure to consider the most fundamental notions of policy or ethics is due, more than any other cause, to the overwhelming passion of people who want to be parents, as Mundy notes more committed and unselfish than any other people classified as "patients" in our health care system. Filled with heart-wrenching -- and heart-lifting -- stories, scientific and technological developments that seem like something out of a comic book but are going on right now in your neighborhood, unforgettable characters, mind-bogglingly difficult choices, and Mundy's own wisdom, this is one of the finest and most important non-fiction books I have read in years.

This is a book about the transformation of the process of human reproduction. It is a book about the whole business of Artificial Reproduction Technology (ART).It is a book about those people who seek to have children through ART and those who supply the services. It is rich in individual case- histories. And it gives a picture of a vast uncontrolled world which is playing a larger and larger part in the story of mankind.
It is a book in which mankind is seen contending with unprecedented situations and questions.
Artifiicial Reproduction technologies which were first introduced to help infertile parents in a short time became means for enabling the creation of families in which only one parent was genetically connected to the child. After this the way became open for the unprecdented capacity of selecting of a 'donor' on the basis of certain desirable qualities. As the technology first developed in the liberal era following the passing of Roe-Wade there was a large degree of laissez- faire carelessness and exploitation in the development of the 'Industry'.
The very process of Artificial Reproduction makes a fundamental change in the situation of humanity. It is no longer necessary for there to be sexual and ideally loving relations between 'man' and 'woman' to have children. This is in itself is such a revolutionary turn about in our situation and conception of ourselves that it seems to me mankind as a whole, and certainly the major religious traditions have not known how to connect this with their own traditional positions.
In any case this work is more a very realistic picture of what is happening in the world of Artificial Reproduction than it is anything else. It has been highly praised in all the reviews I have seen of it, as being clearly and comprehensibly written. It involves an exhaustive research in which many individual case- histories were traced. In the course of this it leads to the consideration of unprecedented situations, many of which create unique moral dilemnas.
Enormous moral dilemnas have developed from the new Industry. Consider the question of 'frozen embryos' the leftovers after other fertilized embryos of the same genetic couple were employed. What does one do with the nearly five- hundred million such frozen embryos in the U.S.? It is the parents choice whether to donate them to other would be parents, or to research, or have them implanted in the mother. They too have the alternatives of keeping them frozen or 'disposing of them'. What is the moral status of any of the above decisions?
One important side of this is the author's look at the relatively uncontrolled private sector involved in selling various technologies, and elements in the process of reproduction.
For most readers a great share of the interest will be in reading of the individual cases, of those desperate to have children. One major question of course is whether 'happy endings' for prospective parents now will mean future well- being for the children involved. Another major question of course is the overall effect on the human community as a whole. Those critical of the excessive and over-liberal use of these technologies claim children are being brought into their world whose futures will be fraught with perilous identity- confusions.
Those who believe in the importance of the two- parent nuclear family will be appalled at the chaos created by the new technologies.
Even those who strongly support the technologies can be troubled by the separation which occurs in so many cases between 'genetic parents' and 'those who actually raise the children.
The changes are very great indeed. Those interested in the overall situation and meaning of what it is to be human would do well to read this book.

John C. Pontrello is a former Sedevacantist activist and seminarian in a traditional Catholic religious community. Prior to his association with traditional Catholicism, he managed an investment planning practice for many years. He currently resides in Western New York.

Delusions indeed!

…”Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Good night!” Johnny Rotten extolled this in 1980.
After reading this very well written and researched piece, you’ll wonder the same thing about the Church and its history of propaganda. I personally am sympathetic to the Sedevacantist camp’s aim, but even that I’m unsure of.
I have a great respect for the Eastern Orthodox Church…maybe even more after reading this book.
Having personally known the author, I can say with all honesty that John has walked the walk, through the gauntlet of traditional “katholicism”. He’s not making up fiction for sensationalism sake. He has felt the pain and confusion of committing your soul to a system of religious fascism, believing that this system will be your ultimate salvation. Sedes, generally well-intentioned, have a proclivity of “gang-raping” the spiritual sojourner, just because he/she refuses to see the world in terms of black and white, only.
After reading this book, to me, at least, it leaves one to speculate whether the unbroken succession of the Orthodox Church, is and has been, the True Church of Jesus Christ on earth, all along.
Has the Roman church defected? Looks like the answer is a resounding, "Yes"! Are Sedes going to get it back? Very unlikely.
For Trad Catholics sitting on the fence, or treading water in a sea of retarded ecclesiology, this book is a must read…Bravo John, bravo!

This book is a "WOW" !!!

This book is a "WOW". The author presents astonishing information on how the Papacy defines itself,it's rights and prerogatives in its' own words, culminating in the notions of infallibility, etc., up to the reforms of Vatican ll. Since that council nearly 50 years ago, there has evolved a civil-war within the ranks of Rome, of a Cultic-Gnostic-Truther-movement called Sedevacantism. (Empty seat/vacant throne.) Sedevacantists maintain that Vatican II's renovations so altered the criteria of the institution of the papacy, that it has in fact dis-annulled the very legitimacy of every seated Pope since. Spearheading that movement are the Diamond Brothers, whose works are addressed in this book.

The author notes third-opinion viewpoints present in most unresolved issues (such as those of 911), and thus acts as moderator to the Sedevacantist debate, presenting the facts of both sides in their own printed statements, while maintaining third-view insights.
Employing this debate format, the author achieves a systematic deconstruction of the Sedevacantist movement, (and at times even of the Papacy itself .) Usefully citing historic references of the earliest Christian beliefs-still held today by the Eastern Orthodox Church, he presents them as solutions to the problems in the West, since the ascendancy of the Papacy.

The book is sequential. Even the Preface and Introduction have key points integral to the text. The Afterward makes a case for all who ever risked Cultic- entrapment "from controlling systems...be they churches, governments or other" forms of Cultic- control.
The believer is left free to believe, the atheist may disavow, but they each now have criteria to assess their own stance.

DISCLAIMER: I myself am a convert from Roman Catholicism to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. I wondered if the author had yet understood that Eastern Orthodox Christianity does not have the rigid legalistic- mentality of the West. He cites "EPIKIA" (liberal filling in the gaps where no law exists,) but not "ECONOMIA", the "soul-saving" prerogative of Orthodox Hierarchs , to apply an Episcopal override to a given canon when deemed necessary to accommodate the salvation a a person with mercy, rather than to defeat them with an unyielding law.

The Afterword starts with prophetic insight that : "Information technology has introduced unprecedented opportunity for ordinary people to substantiate the claims of powerful institutions" ... That the power of information sharing might advance the cause of freedom. BUT, "That freedom of information will vanish in a whirlwind once it has solidified our transition into the "NOVOUS ORDO SECLORUM".
I wished the author would have further defined that "New-Age"- "New Sacred Order" , as the world wide Pan -Ecumenical church of the Antichrist, as foretold by millennia of Eastern Orthodox Saints. That tantalizing point warrants its' own chapter.

Because of its' astounding scope, this book belongs in every University Library, and in the hands of Thinkers everywhere. This book is one to own, and John Pontrello is an author to watch in the future.

This Book MUST be Answered!!!

Masterpiece of clarity.

All faithful Catholics who know their Church teachings and history must come to the Sedevacantist conclusion. However, it appears they are eventually forced into choosing which contradictions they can live with.

This book is for honest truth seekers and must be answered. It is not the type of book against sedevacantism like those of the Patrick Madrid crowd which simply beg the question. Nor is it like those of the Salza, Siscoe, and Ferrara crowd that intentionally confuse, refuse to call a spade a spade, and outright lie. To them, it is a game.

This book is not for boys but for Catholic men... and women :)

The current volume, Modern Dilemmas: Understanding Collective Action in the 21st Century, is a collection of essays which target the problem of collective action from both a theoretical and applied perspective. The volume consists of four parts, each of these providing insights into different research fields. Thus, the first part, Theoretical Approaches, offers a guideline to the study of collective action in public choice theory and rational choice institutionalism and shows how it can be connected to other research programs such as constructivism, social network analysis and contractualism. The second part, Collective Action and Responsibility, tackles issues specific to political philosophy such as collective and individual responsibility and the morality of free-riding behavior. The third part, Collective Action and Public Policies, presents empirical studies on collective action in relation to educational policies, health policies and policies which target food security. Finally, the fourth part, Collective Action, Political Institutions and Social Movements, consists of various studies on classical problems of collective action such as political protests and revolutions, but also problems which are not traditionally associated with collective action such as party funding and the role of international organizations in economic recessions. The multidisciplinary character of the volume therefore makes it an interesting reading for students and scholars working in a number of different areas of study, such as political science, economy, political philosophy, public policies, comparative politics and international relations.

Dylan Kissane is director of graduate studies and professor of international politics at CEFAM in Lyon, France. Alexandru Volacu teaches at the National School of Political and Administrative Studies (SNSPA), Bucharest, and is editor of the Romanian Journal of Society and Politics. He is author of numerous academic articles in internationally indexed journals.

Mari Jo Buhle

Mari Jo Buhle is William R. Kenan Jr. University Professor and Professor of American Civilization and History at Brown University, specializing in American women’s history. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois, Urbana—Champaign, and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the author of Women and American Socialism, 1870—1920 (1981) and Feminism and Its Discontents: A Century of Struggle with Psychoanalysis (1998). She is also coeditor of Encyclopedia of the American Left, second edition (1998). Professor Buhle held a fellowship (1991—1996) from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Teresa Murphy

Teresa Murphy is Associate Professor of American Studies at George Washington University. Born and raised in California, she received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and her PhD from Yale University. She is the author of Ten Hours Labor: Religion, Reform, and Gender in Early New England (1992) and is currently completing a study about the origins of women’s history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. She is the former Associate Editor of American Quarterly.

Jane F. Gerhard is a visiting assistant professor of History at Mount Holyoke College, specializing in American women’s history and the history of sexuality in America. She received her B.A. from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and her Ph.D. from Brown University. She is the author of Desiring Revolution: Second Wave Feminism and the Rewriting of American Sexual Thought, 1920 to 1982 (2001).

Dear ANONYMOUS Reader from Sedona: I'm sorry to say, but you're all wrong. You obviously did not read Stoltz's "Turning Obstacles into Opportunities". You cannot appreciate the value of the metaphor when you don't know anything about the extensive investigation and thorough scientific research behind it. That's a stupid as thinking you can learn to drive by reading the operators manual of a car. The metaphor is not the method itself.
The book is well worth reading AFTER reading "Turning Obstacles into Opportunities".

Perhaps the Most Complete Compendium of Hopi Information

Frank Waters' excellent BOOK OF THE HOPI is probably the most complete collection of Hopi stories, language, rituals, and photographs in one place. Waters wrote this book with assistance from thirty-two Hopi elders back in 1963. Much time has passed since then, and while the way of the Hopi remains mostly unchanged, access to their sacred ceremonies and rituals has been greatly reduced in the last several decades.
While BOOK OF THE HOPI was written through the eyes and ears of an outsider, it contains much of the spirit of the Hopi, and countless fascinating insights. One such example is the explanation of how one sacred ceremony (the Ya Ya) was profaned and is no longer performed, since much of its powers were taken for evil. "When you receive a wonderful power and use it for evil you lose the power. You have to use it for good to keep it."
I love the richness of information contained in this little book: symbols, the tablets of the clans, a glossary of Hopi words, thrilling tales about the creation of the worlds, and detailed descriptions of sacred objects such as the Paho (prayer-feather). This attention to detail is marvelous, but it's the heart of BOOK OF THE HOPI that makes me feel at home with the Hopi and at one with their spirit.
I give this book my highest recommendation.

Ever since my first visit to the mesas I have wanted to
know more about the Hopi people, their culture and their
beliefs. On of the best books I have found (coming from a
non-Hopi) is "Book of the Hopi" by Frank Waters and
published by Penguin Books, 1963. This book covers the
origin of the Hopi, the four migrations, the origin of the
clans, ceremonies etc. It is a book for anyone interested
in learning more about the Hopi people. Thought you might
wish to include it in your book list.

This book is my first exposure to the historical, spiritual and cultural history of the Hopi, both prehistoric and modern. A must read for anyone interested in the honorable traditions of the first American inhabitants whose history predates that of European biblical history, and how the introduction of the European has completely altered their ritualistic practices. This book has opened my eyes to a people whose lives are rich in dedication to the preservation of peace for all living entities on this planet and throughout the cosmos.
Who this book is not for is the UFOlogist, Hollow-Earth and Alien-Conspiracy theorists who believe the Hopi people have come from the purported middle-earth where an evil alien civilization still exist to this day. However, who this book is for are those who respect life as the Hopi respect life and who want to these peoples through the early migrations. From this book you will see that the Hopi have traveled throughout all of the Northern and Southern Americas, as well as Canada and the Artic polar regions long before the European traveled to these parts of the globe, and whose religious practices are older than that of any religion in the world. Where the Christian religion (through the teachings and historical records of the Bible) only know of two worlds the Hopi civilization have memories of four worlds, but both have records of the exact same destruction of the last world, i.e., its destruction by water. Also the Hopi are privy to the knowledge that we will face three more worlds.
I rate this book wonderful, enlightening, educational and spiritually edifying.
