John L. Capinera is a professor of entomology and chairman of the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida. His interests include insect ecology and pest management, and he has conducted research on insects in forest, rangeland, and crop ecosystems.

On April 16, 1961, an understrength, weakly supported force of Cuban exiles attempted to seize a beachhead at the Bay of Pigs to establish an anti-Castro government. Within three days the invaders had been killed or captured, and the U.S. had suffered a humiliating foreign-policy setback. "Not only were our facts in error," admitted President Kennedy, "but our policy was wrong because the premises on which it was built were wrong." Higgins (Korea and the Fall of MacArthur) traces the development of those premises leading to the policymany of them legacies from the Eisenhower administrationthen describes the military fiasco itself and its immediate aftermath. The "in error" facts were largely supplied by the CIA in what Higgins calls "the successful deception of the Kennedy administration" by that agency. Kennedy himself comes off poorly here as a president who "had the courage neither to carry the operation through nor to cancel it outright."

Under Cover, or Out of Control? The New York Times November 29, 1987, Sunday, Late City Final Edition (Review of 2 books, including, Covert Action: The CIA and the Limits of American Intervention in the Postwar World, only this book review included here)

The torrent of revelations about the Iran-contra affair during the summer's televised hearings, and in the recently released report of the Congressional committees that conducted the hearings, has made Americans aware both of the importance of covert action in the foreign policy of their country and of its risks and costs. These two books do nothing to rehabilitate its reputation or to improve its image...

...Mr. Higgins, whose style is anything but graceful, uses strong primary colors to paint the ''perfect failure'' of the Bay of Pigs. He makes no new revelations, but his solid research -in memoirs, declassified documents and interviews -leads to stark and damning conclusions. A reluctant President Kennedy inherited a half-baked plan for the invasion of Cuba prepared by the C.I.A. under President Eisenhower. Kennedy and his Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, mistook for an approval the Joint Chiefs of Staff's mere acquiescence to a plan that the military, deep down, deemed insufficient.

Even so, Kennedy's desire to make the American role in the operation as invisible as possible forced the organizers to move the site of the landing from the town of Trinidad (on Cuba's south coast, near mountains into which the invaders could have retreated) to the swamp of the Bay of Pigs, 80 miles from the nearest mountains, and led them to dilute and delay the air strikes that were supposed to cover the operation. Even if the original plan for these strikes had been followed, Mr. Higgins believes - rightly, in my opinion -that Mr. Castro would have won, given his will to fight. The military requirement for success was a large American participation in the invasion. The political necessity of presenting the affair as an attempt by Cubans to liberate their island, and of avoiding a wave of anti-Americanism in Latin America, excluded such participation - and doomed the undertaking.

MR. HIGGINS praises Kennedy for having resisted strong pressures toward a more open and considerable American military intervention, and he suggests that the C.I.A. planners, Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell, had allowed a timid plan to go into effect because they gambled that its very flaws would force the President's hand. But the author also shows how shoddy the decision-making process within the Administration had been; such dissenters as Under Secretary of State Chester Bowles and Senator J. William Fulbright were not taken seriously. Kennedy was the victim of his own lack of experience, of his anti-Communism (or liberal imperialism), of his need to show toughness (especially as he was resisting pressure to intervene in Laos) and of a time bomb inherited from his predecessor: the Cuban exiles who were being trained in Guatemala were increasingly unwelcome there, and as Mr. Treverton puts it, ''There seemed only one place to put [them] - Cuba.''

After the fiasco, an investigation within the C.I.A. concluded that the operation had been ''too big to be a raid and too small to be an invasion.'' When one looks at President Reagan's far more overt action against Nicaragua, one realizes that his Administration is determined not only to do away with the so-called Vietnam syndrome but to ignore the lessons of the Bay of Pigs as well.

During the last century, the United States participated in over 28 armed conflicts worldwide. The Bay of Pigs fiasco became the Achilles heel of America's dependability and courage to fight for a good cause.

Bogie Ozdemir is the Vice President of Sun Life Financial Group, responsible for the Enterprise Economic Capital, Operational Risk, Model Vetting, Risk Analytics, Risk Policy, and Economic Scenario Generation groups. Until recently, he was the Vice President of BMO Financial Group where he was responsible for Economic Capital, Stress Testing, and Basel Analytics, and jointly responsible for ICAAP. Previous to this he was the Vice President of Standard & Poor s Credit Risk Services group where he was globally responsible for engineering new products and solutions, and business development and management. He has co-authored many papers such as Practical and Theoretical Challenges in Validating Basel Parameters: Key Learnings from the Experience of a Canadian Bank and Basel Requirement of Downturn LGD: Modeling and Estimating PD & LGD Correlations both published in the Journal of Credit Risk, Estimating and Validating Long-Run Probability of Default with respect to Basel II Requirements , published in the Journal of Risk Model Validation in 2008, and more recently Information asymmetry and bank regulation: Can the spread of debt contracts be explained by recovery rates? , published in the Journal of Financial Intermediation in 2012. In 2008, Bogie also co-authored a book titled Basel II Implementation: A Guide to Developing and Validating a Compliant, Internal Risk Rating System. Dr. Peter Miu's research is primarily in the areas of credit risk modeling, bankruptcy prediction, financial institutions, risk management, exchange-traded funds, empirical methods, and investments. His research has been published in various journals such as the Journal of Financial Intermediation, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Financial Research, and Journal of Credit Risk. Dr. Miu has written extensively on issues related to Basel II. His co-authored 2008 book Basel II Implementation: A Guide to Developing and Validating a Compliant, Internal Risk Rating System provides both the theory and practical how-to knowledge risk management professionals need to implement the concepts of Basel II in their institutions. Dr. Miu is an Associate Professor of Finance at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University, where he teaches courses in financial economics and international financial management. He has consulted on such issues as validations of credit risk measures, Basel II implementation, and stress testing models. Dr. Miu holds an MBA and Ph.D. in Finance both from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

Burned! I purchased this book used, and the 10-digit ISBN printed on near the UPC label does not match the 10-digit ISBN printed on page ii. The book turned out to be an older version that is so different from its newer counterpart, that my child cannot use it in class or for homework.

Adult At Home Learning

This book is great for an adult learner. Not the most basic but the first few chapters I made flash cards for to practice all the introduction words. I also purchased the workbook ISBN-13: 978-0130360014 ISBN-10: 0130360015 for extra practice. There are free online resources too, you don't have to buy a new book to access them either. For a $10 or less book this has quite a bit of information in it, and is fun enough to keep be entertained while I study.

Good Solid book

3.5 stars. Like the characters, liked the story with a complete ending. Would read more about them if a second was written. Well worth the price, you won't be disappointed. The biggest problem for me was the lack of contractions halted the flow of the book. Everything was 'I am going....' or 'we will have dinner.' As I was reading, I found myself changing it to I'm going and we'll have dinner. Maybe it's just me but I felt the writing should be less formal and more the way we'd talk to each other.

Good book in serious need of an editor.

First, what did I like and why didn't this book get only 1 star even though the grammar is atrocious at times?

I do think that it was actually a good story. The premise is interesting and I could actually believe that the characters would act the way they did. E.J.'s insecurity is portrayed well so I did not find it strange that she hid her feelings at the beginning. And while I didn't like the way Ria acted towards the end, the resulting drama wasn't contrived, but realistic (so realistic I really wanted to just shake the damn woman).

Still, as my title says: this book needs an editor. The only reason why I don't want my money back is because the book isn't expensive. You need to be really laid back when it comes to grammar to enjoy this one. There are loads of mistakes concerning sentence structure and spelling (heard for heart? Please...).

I normally don't expect much from my books, I only want to be decently entertained for a few hours. And while the story certainly made this possible, the writing deterred my enjoyment on several occasions.

This book started off really well...

The author had a good original plot and at least four great characters in her hands. Unfortunately, the autistic child, Maggie, was put in charge of all the adults, and Ria morphed into a self-centered, clueless character for 2/3rds of the book. By the end, I was hoping Ellie would wake up and start making better choices. I understood why Ellie loved Maggie, but never really connected on why Ria was "the one". Kind of an essential element. The plot momentum slowed and devolved into rote walking in circles. The editing issues have been covered by others. On the bright side, there were glimpses of the author's true talents here.

Lynda O'Rourke once again takes her readers on a thrill ride of scary suspense! Sorry, I don't give spoilers.

Bravo, this book does not deserve a five star rating but more like a ten star. Follow Kassidy Bell on her harrowing quest to find the infamous Dr. Langstone. Will her torment ever end?

Cannot wait for Book 4 to see if Kassidy finds her answers. Once again, brave Lynda O'Rourke, I'm such a huge fan!

Fantastic suspenseful read

What a fantastic suspenseful, terror filled adventure. Each terror filled page had me turning frantically trying to find out what was happening. I can't get enough of these demonic filled pages. Each plot twist has you gripping your book with anticipation. Who is who? Can they be trusted? Is Kassidy doomed? I need to know. I can't wait to get book 4 in my little hands!!!!
