Weird Girl, by Mae McCall

There was no blood. No death, injury, or dismemberment. (Well, possibly a little bit of dismemberment.) Cleo squirmed through the mass of spectators and crawled through two sets of legs to get into her room, where she found her roommates pretty much where she had left them, except now they were screaming and pointing at the interior of Cleo’s second dresser drawer.

The girls, trying to be nice (and also because they were seriously leery of Cleo), had unanimously decided to clean up the mess that Mae (or her cronies) had left. Once the mattress was relatively clean, they had split the remaining duties: half would clean the pillowcases, shoes, and floor; the other half would clean out the dresser and try to salvage Cleo’s clothes. This was a great plan until somebody found the severed head rolled up in a sweater.

     Trouble is her middle name....

Cleo St. James isn't like other girls. In fact, she's downright creepy. But by the time she's nine years old, she's also alone—ignored by her parents and shunned by her peers. Her only friends are two grown men, and the fact that one is a gangster and the other a thief provides enough insight into the forces that shape Cleo into the weird young woman that she becomes.

As Cleo grows up (too fast), her criminal tendencies lead her closer and closer to someone from her past--perhaps the only person in the world who truly understands her. With a sailor's vocabulary, a fine set of lock picks, and a few million in the bank, Cleo always gets what she wants. But when it comes to what she needs—a real connection with someone—it pays to have someone who knows her better than she knows herself.

intelligent and strong…with a sailor’s vocabulary
By Hawaii_Homemaker
This book was definitely not what I was expecting. The synopsis describes a story following Cleo, who is “beautiful, rich, intelligent, and strong…with a sailor’s vocabulary, a fine set of lock picks, and a few million in the bank, Cleo always gets what she wants”. TBH, I think I read this book because it was recommended. If it was just based on the synopsis, I probably would have passed. However, this book is much more interesting and has more depth than what could have imagined.

Cleo grew up with neglectful parents, simply because they are in their own intellectual world and forget that they have a child. Instead of protecting her by picking her up when she falls, they try protect her by teaching her observational methods so that she’ll observe something before she has a chance to trip over it. In a way, while they neglect her, they teach her to neglect the world around her by being focused on observing rather than participating — everything becomes a social experiment. Her childhood leads up to her being too intelligent, without any social/interpersonal awareness, making her “weird”.

The weirdness is not only her – A lot of this book is weird (get it? right?)- she finds herself in nonsensical situations and reacts to it in pretty strange ways but I think that’s what makes it fun. Yet, her reactions are exactly what you expect from her. Put a curious, too-intelligent girl in strange situations and see her come out on top.

You also see this deep seated need to connect to someone. Where her parents had each other, Cleo had no one. So it’s no surprise when she makes connections with totally inappropriate people, and also hunts down a person from her past who she does have a connection to.

Half of the book takes place while Cleo is still in high school. However, although it’s set in a high school and she’s young, the character is so mature and the situations she faces are a little older so you’re not reading high school drivel of “OMG! He’s soooo cute!! :P ;)”.

I thought it would be creepy when the reader is introduced to Jackson, while he’s a grown adult and she’s 10, and you realize, oh dear, they’re going to get together. Even more irksome is that he knows how intelligent she is and uses her as a pawn in his game – he grows fond of her (not in a creepy way) but almost a “I feel bad I’m using you so I’ll be nice and friendly so I don’t feel as bad” while you ultimately wonder if he views her as just a tool for his ultimate goal. This sort of attitude toward her made me feel a lot less creepy about the situation. So he disappears when he finally achieves his goal (thanks to her) and doesn’t reappear until she’s an adult and it’s because she’s looking for him. The romance doesn’t factor in until much much later in the story (because, um, age) and even then, when it starts creeping in and things begin changing – I still felt like he was hesitating and thought “Oh boy, just give in”.

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it. Not much romance until really the last 10% of the story – but I loved this heroine and her quirks. I kept thinking, this author must have a degree in psychology. Then, I find out, her next book is about a psychologist! I felt validated when I saw that one.

On a side note: What got me chuckling was that Mae McCall (author) introduced a high school nemesis named Mae. Wonder what was going through the author’s mind there.

A brilliant novel. A storyline completely different from anything you have ever read. The dialogue is very modern and impulsive, just like the central characters. Why isn't this book on the NY Times list?

Trust Me, It's A Good Read!
By Yolanda S. Bean
In September of 2013, I first read McKenzie's Close My Eyes, her debut thriller for adults and really enjoyed it. Though the plot wasn't entirely unpredictable, the characters and story were engaging, so I have been keeping an eye out for her books. And this one, her latest, is in some ways the opposite of her first in that the plot is much stronger than the characters. Livy Jackson is a mother of two with a marriage that is still recovering from her husband's affair six years earlier. But this is not the only grief in Livy's life - eighteen years earlier, her younger sister, Kara, was murdered. In the aftermath, Livy becomes friends with her sister's best friend and is devastated to discover her corpse, denying that her friend and godmother to her children would be capable of killing herself. But she needs to prove that murder is the only possibility to explain Julia's death.

McKenzie also interjects the killer's perspective, which allows readers more insight with which to try and guess the identity of the killer - could it be Julia's creepy twin brother? Her newest boyfriend? Or could it even be Will, Livy's own lying, cheating husband? As Livy keeps digging, more clues mount up and McKenzie manages to keep the reader guessing up until the final, climatic reveal. It's much more of an unpredictable plot than her previous book and though Julia's hand-wringing and self-pitying is trying at times, it's still an exciting read that is hard to put down. I am impressed with the false trails left that still ends up quite satisfying. It's a fast-paced and fun thriller and the killer's perspective adds to the growing tension. It's very well done and I will definitely continue to keep an eye out for her future books!

"You Can Trust Me" review
By michael a. draper
This suspenseful thriller was recommended to me by my reviewer friend, Tom McGee. Tom's literary tastes are usually on the money and with his review, he hit the nail on the head.

Livy Jackson has dealt with her sister's death for almost twenty years.

Currently, she comes to her best friend, Julia's, flat for lunch and finds her dead which is ruled a suicide.

Livy doesn't believe it but her husband isn't being supportive. He thinks she's being paranoid.

In the midst of dealing with her friend's death, Livy's husband is given an assignment in Paris. Not only must she bear her grief alone but she learns that a colleague of her husband with whom he had an affair with in the past, is accompanying him on the Paris assignment.

Livy feels an added burden of guilt because Julia had left a number of urgent messages on Livy's phone, asking Livy to call her.

In the hands of a lesser writer, the story might have been a typical melodrama but Sophie McKenzie draws Livy out so that the reader feels her pain. When she learns something new about her husband, she faces everything by herself.

The drama increases as she meets Julia's mysterious boyfriend and seems drawn to him. However, the reader isn't sure of his intentions.

The story is done with panache and McKenzie's characters come to life before our eyes.

I can't wait to read the next novel by this exciting author.

I received a free book in return for my honest review.

Eight Victims & Counting, the Dark Stranger Blends in With Friends & Family, but Nobody is Safe From the Monster's Addiction!
By Tom McGee
Sophie McKenzie's "You Can Trust Me" is a suspenseful thriller with more than enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing throughout this engaging whodunit.

Thirty-eight year old Olivia "Livy" Jackson, nee Small, is the protagonist. Set in England, during her junior year in college, her sister Kara, a freshman was brutally murdered by an unknown serial killer still at large.

As this spellbinding novel develops we learn that the clandestine killer may be one of Liv's friends, family or acquaintances. The characters and mystery are built upon that central theme when some 18 years later, Livy, her 7 year old son, Zack and her 12 year old daughter, Hannah find a the body of a dear friend dead in her apartment, the victim of an apparent Suicide.

Olivia and her lawyer husband of 15 years, Will and cannot escape Will's boss, Leo and Leo's wife, Martha Harbury's annual dinner invitation in their home. The Jackson's dread the event, knowing that long time employee and Will's former mistress, Catrina, who heads Leo's Paris office will be there as well as Leo's son, Paul and his wife, Becky, a school teacher.

During the event, Liv's best friend, Julia Dryden leaves several unanswered messages on Olivia's cell phone, an important call that Livy does not get a chance to return until after Leo announces that Leo and Will must leave early the next morning for Leo's Geneva, Switzerland office to try and save the account of their biggest client there.

For the sake of the children and the couple's marriage, Olivia has long since forgiven Will for having an affair with Catrina; however, when she leans that Catrina will be going with Leo and Will on the Geneva business trip trouble brews for the Jacksons.

Without exposing the murderer, the author pens 7 chapters interspersed cleverly throughout this 326-page roller coaster ride which she allows the Killer to set the scene that she names for the victims murdered there.

As the author constructs alternate paths for potential suspects, she keenly develops numerous characters. We learn through the eyes of the monster that the killer is not what he or she seems to be. The killer does not leave clues or witnesses. The spouses and friends would not believe this seemingly normal person capable of these heinous murders.

I thoroughly enjoyed this action packed story. It had me constantly guessing and changing my mind back and forth on the identity of the antagonist and e the next target on the mounting list of victims. In both cases the reader should not rule out anyone, even the ones they trust.

I loved this English whodunit and bet you will too.

Enjoy!

Race, Sport and the American Dream: Third Edition, by Earl Smith

Race, Sport and the American Dream reports the main findings of a long term research project investigating the scope and consequences of the deepening relationship between African American males and the institution of sport. While there is some scholarly literature on the topic, author Earl Smith tries to understand through this project how sport has changed the nature of African American Civil Society and has come to be a major influence on economic opportunities, schooling and the shaping of African American family life.

The third edition of Race, Sport and the American Dream improves upon the second edition in four key ways: (1) by updating the empirical data so that it is the most current on the market, (2) by expanding the discussion of the Athletic Industrial Complex (AIC) to include a robust discussion of the explosion of Conference Realignment, (3) by expanding the discussion of leadership in SportsWorld to include the most current theory in the area of sports management and (4) by adding an entirely new chapter on male athletes and violence against women.

In addition, the third edition expands the discussion of the elusive American Dream and the role of sports in accessing better life chances, success and happiness. The third edition of Race, Sport and the American Dream also includes a discussion of the increased role that social media plays in SportsWorld by allowing everyone and anyone to become a ''sports critic'' as well as a discussion of race in SportsWorld in the era of changing the racial landscape of the US. Specifically, the US has become more racially diverse and critics are debating the role that the election of the first African American president plays in this changing landscape. All in all, the third edition of Race, Sport and the American Dream expands on existing discussions and provides new areas of inquiry.

This book is intended to provide social scientists and others interested in sports with an understanding of carefully selected issues related to the African American athlete. Smith examines the world of amateur sports (Olympic and intercollegiate sport) using Immanuel Wallerstein's ''World-Systems Paradigm'' which provides a lens with which to examine the colonizing and exploitative nature of intercollegiate sports and the special arrangements that universities have with SportsWorld.

All of the topics in this book are addressed within the context of the history of racial oppression that has dominated race relations in the United States since its inception as a nation-state in the 1620s. Across a variety of topics including sport as big business — which Smith terms the Athletic Industrial Complex — to criminal behavior by athletes, to the lack of leadership opportunities for African American athletes, to the question of the biological superiority of African American athletes, Smith argues that any discussion of race and sport must be understood within this context of power and domination. Otherwise the importance of the question itself will always be (a) misunderstood or (b) underestimated.

Actually enjoyed it
By princsskik
I must say after two college degrees, this is one of the best books I've had in any course. It was very informational and up to date with current topics of interest. I learned a lot about the world. The title seems boring, thought I would hate the class but nope, turned out to be one of my favorites simply because of this book. My only complaint is the price but that is typical of textbooks. This one actually has a reason to stay updated and current since it deals with the world in general including the environment, civil rights, economics, war, rebels, etc. If you have a course utilizing this book, consider yourself lucky that you are not taking a boring class!

This is a great geography textbook. The way it is laid out makes it very easy to navigate. The sections encompass a lot of information and it is very interesting. I like that the book is updated so often, as it allows current events to be included.

What I needed
By Rebecca Lynn
Had to get this for my Geography 7 class. I was very lucky to have a professor who recommended the earlier edition for the sole reason that "it is cheaper" like wow bless him! The book was decent quality and exactly what I needed for the class. Annnnd because I'm a constant traveler and love geography, I've kept this book for reference and do look through it before I visit each region of the world. Very informative.

An Introduction to Biological Nurturing, by Suzanne Colson

Most health professionals believe that mothers need to be taught how to breastfeed. This book describes new research evidence suggesting that mothers and babies innately know how to breastfeed, and introduces a new approach called biological nurturing. Biological nurturing is a collective term for optimal breastfeeding states and positions whose interaction release spontaneous behaviours helping mothers and babies get started with feeding. Biological nurturing is quick and easy to do. Most moms and babies automatically move into the correct positions if left on their own. The challenge for health professionals lies with understanding the releasing mechanisms and learning how to help mothers and babies do what comes naturally. This book restores confidence in nature's biological design and in mothers' innate capacity to breastfeed. Dr. Suzanne Colson is one of my heroes because her thoughtful and careful research and the conclusions she has drawn from this research have finally brought common sense into the discussion of breastfeeding. Ina May Gaskin, CNM, Ph.D., Author, Spiritual Midwifery and Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding Colson's mentor, French obstetrician Michel Odent, changed the way we think about birth. In this book, Suzanne Colson does the same for breastfeeding. Get ready to rethink-like I did-many of your most basic breastfeeding assumptions and learn some revolutionary new ways to help mothers and babies. This book will change your life! Breastfeeding as a normal and enjoyable activity of daily living
By Mother Knows
In our modern world, breastfeeding our children has become an obstacle course of rules, gadgets, misinformation, judgement, and separation. This excellent book describes a research-based, practical way to return breastfeeding to the normal, dynamic, and comfortable activity of daily living it was always meant to be. The author clearly shows that there is not one "correct" way to breastfeed. Written by a scientist who is also a mother, the descriptions, photographs, research findings, and no-nonsense wisdom in Suzanne Colson's slim volume can be useful for pregnant women, mothers, family and friends, and professionals whose job it is to help mothers. All can learn about Biological Nurturing (BN) and how the innate abilities and reflexes of mothers and babies can be released to make learning to breastfeed a pleasure. As Dr. Colson says in Chapter 1: .."BN is as quick and easy to do as picking up a baby."

A new approach to an age-old practice
By LC in Wilmington
Suzanne is first and foremost a scientist - through her observations, which she shares in this book, we rediscover how babies and mothers both have innate reflexes that are released with the right elements of positioning, infant and maternal states and hormones. Suzanne makes breastfeeding fun and easy again, making us question 'the way we've always done it' . If you work with new mothers and babies, you must add this to your library!

Diary of a Man in Despair: A Masterpiece About the Comprehension of Evil, by Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen

This is a prophetic insight into the psychotic soul of Nazi Germany, written by a Prussian aristocrat in the years between 1936 and 1944. It charts the rise of Hitler and the blind allegiance of the masses to his suicidal cause. Reck-Malleczewen's tortured meditations graphically reflect his growing despair at the horrors of Hitler's regime and the emergence of the totalitarian madness that was consuming the German soul. The despair reaches its climax in the summer of 1944 as the author senses that his country is doomed and that he will perish with it. This fateful insight was finally borne out when Reck-Malleczewen was executed at Dachau on 16th February 1945.

Profoundly Moving, Witty, Wise and Rueful Account of a World Sunk in Psychosis...
By Mark Daniel
This is an important, terrible book by a sane, sad, angry man. As he sat in his six hundred year-old Bavarian schloss, gazing out upon a valley threatened by Nazi expropriation, Reck wrote these diaries only to bury them each night in his woods. He is a snob, as must be all sane people confronted by the dull, insensate barbarism of 'mass-man'. He yearns for Cicero's 'otium cum dignitate' but is surrounded only by otiose boorishness, cruelty and soulless ambition. His hatred for Hitler and for the bourgeoisie who unthinkingly sustain the Reich is overwhelming. He confesses that it nigh overwhelms him daily. For all that, his beautifully cadenced, rational prose sings of love - for Germany, for England, for Russia, for the nobilities and kindnesses of gross humankind - which elevates these diaries far above the level of a mere rant against the quotidian monsters lording it on his every side.

Reck tells a good anecdote. He turns a witty, vicious phrase in order to express his despite. I bought this book on Kindle and have regretted it, so often have I wished to underline passages or make marginal notes, because this is a prophetic book. Not only does Reck foresee from the outset how the Nazi nightmare must end, but his diaries are nigh as pertinent today as when they were written. The demise of otium (where is the schole in our schools?), the decline of spirituality (and even its cognate sensuality), the joyless materialism, the willingness to follow the mass into a mechanised hell sooner than assert individuality or values, all are familiar today as we allow our politicians once more to surrender democracy and fair-play to yet another bureaucratic, German-dominated empire.

Reck is a Catholic. He foresees a renaissance of non-rational spirituality after the demise of Nazism. Thus far, he has been proved wrong in this alone. Whether his prophecy will be fulfilled this time round remains to be seen.

Less despairing than the title suggests....
By A Customer
There have been many personal memoirs describing aspects of the second World War, however this book, although not especially well-written, is unusual in that the author did not have the benefit of hindsight. This is a personal and highly idiosyncratic description of the events leading up to the war and of conditions and attitudes in Germany during the war. Despite the title, the author managed to avoid a tone of despair, and instead conveys a passionate loathing of the regime and a fervent belief that the Hitler era would be ended, although at great cost to Germany. Reck-Malleczewen was a nationalist whose great love of his country did not blind him to the sinister use by Hitler of German pride. He remains coherent despite the realisation that he is impotent to act against the regime, and documents in great detail (sometimes, with hindsight, lacking in historical accuracy) some of the more ridiculous and darkly amusing occurrences in Germany. The book is typified by intellectual arrogance, and the assumption that the author's background and education enables him to see beyond the trappings of the Nazi structures, and to attempt to comprehend the madness engulfing his country. Nevertheless, one is left with the impression that Reck-Malleczewen was essentially a very humane and thoughtful person whose attempts to understand the flaws in his own country make for a fascinating, if somewhat macabre, read.
