great overview, focuses on technical aspects of production

This collection of Keyboard & Remix magazine articles from the last couple decades is, as it's title states, an overview of the evolution of dance music, specifically the artist's production methods. Musicians spill the beans on their favorite gear, and while the lists of outboard effects and software patches will be of interest to producers and aspiring musicians, the average electronic music fan may find it boring. This is certainly a technical look at music making, and considering it's an anthology of separate magazine articles, shouldn't be viewed as a seamless cultural history. Of particular note are interviews with the usually reticent Aphex Twin (ca. Richard D. James album, just as he moved to computer-based production) and Autechre (who get as in depth about their favorite gear & production methods as they probably ever will)

with the first great expansion in the early 8th century

This fascinating book shows how Hinduism incorporated many ideas from Christianity and Gnosticism, as well as much interesting historical information about the spread of Christianity to India. However, the author makes the grave mistake describing Islam as being in the 6th century rather than the 7th, with the first great expansion in the early 8th century. Also, the author assumes the reader knows a great deal about Indian religions and ethnic groups and explains very little.
If the author would correct these problems and add some time lines and maps, as well as charts comparing the religions and historical sources, this could be a great book to use in a college classroom.

a magical story that makes you feel like you belong

To all my english-speaking friends and book-lovers - if you are looking for a fantastic and mystical book series that is very different from what you've read so far, go and fetch this one. Not the typical vampire stories - there are other mystical creatures out there that make this story so worth telling.

I simply love it!

The story robbed my heart from the very beginning...a sweet young American girl (17y) caught in the mysteries of love and Scottish myths! One surprise and secret hits the other. All set in the magical landscapes of Scotland. Emma is forced by destiny to move to the Isle of Skye and leave her past behind - but that past is going to get back at her in ways she has never thought of. She isn't just the ordinary girl she always thought she'd be. There is more to her story than the eye can see and if it wasn't for Calum (the magical love of her life) she'd probably drown in sorrows. He gives her sense and a reason to live after she thought she'd lost everything. They both save one another in this world in all ways possible. To me it's a gem among stones!

Marah Woolf is one incredible author! Her story is set in a truly beautiful place and her style of writing is the most detailed and perfect description I've ever known. I felt like I was right there on the Isle of Skye and being part of this adventure. Her stories are fascinating and inspiring! She is thoughtful, talented and sweet - and I thank her for the #SilverMoonSaga.

I love the moonlight saga

I love the moonlight saga . Marah takes me each time with a new world . And she describes places as authentic as if you were standing right in the middle . Feelings between Emma and Calum are downright palpable and you can feel how closely the two are linked . One must have the moonlight saga read easily . And I'd like to see it as a film . Great story and a new world . I love it!!! 10 *

This commentary provides a comprehensive analysis of four Old Testament books and the reader certainly will have little room for questions or need further investigation outside of this text. The book of Micah, for example, is about ten pages in a standard Bible, and Allen’s book devotes more than 120 pages to Micah alone. For each prophet, the book provides an introduction, and then addresses the dating, authorship, and the historical setting behind the book. Next, the author details theology, a bibliography, and then an analysis of the book.

I used this text as part of a graduate-level seminary course and my readings were restricted to the books of Jonah and Micah. This book is an excellent resource, but may provide more than what a preacher/teacher may need. It certainly covers all bases in regards to an academic analysis.

I teach an "economics of Antitrust course" and found the Antitrust Revolution to be a teriffic complement to Blair & Kaserman's text Antitrust Economics. I have my students write "case briefs" of the case studies presented in the text based upon different categories of conduct. Each case study is written by an economist directly involved in the case. Students appreciate the perspective of an insider in seeing how economic analysis is employed in the adjudication of these important antitrust cases.

Good quality book, nothing was worn or discolored/printed.

Not an exciting read, but is used in many college courses.

Arrived later than promised, and was no longer needed by the time it arrived, which is a bummer when things have prime shipping.

General Cognitive methods to improve our lives �!!!!!!!

This is a good book with general methods for transforming your life. The Part One provides very good information on the Evolution of Consciousness and explains in a very understandable way how the subconscious works. Part Two includes the Technics for Transformation. The author writes in a very clear way and provides several references if you want to deep in the subject. She provides very strict reasons why we must never manipulate the will of another and its meaning and why “positive visualization” is considered white magic. The only thing that is deficient is that the Figures are not very clear. They look as if they were printed with injected ink. One of the most important things on the book is that “the power of thought is the only thing over which you have unquestionable control”. This book is for the general reader.

A objective view of a controversial subject

This book is a fun quick read on the life and presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Filled with quirky details, like the fact that despite his extremely limited formal schooling he is the only president to hold a patent, it also looks deeply at the issue of slavery during the Civil War, and the president's own controversial ideas about harmony between blacks and whites. It is appropriate for students learning about the era, as well as casual readers looking to brush up on their history. C. J. Knight has done a lot of homework, digging for root causes instead of simple explanations, and has a historian's eye for detail.

Discover the Societal Forces Behind President Lincoln's Actions

This book provides a verbal timeline for the "whys" behind many of the choices of Abraham Lincoln. It traces many of his values and portrays many of the various pressures on the man, the politician, and the President.

The author's portrayal of the complexities of the Civil War era provided a look into the the multiple issues that intertwined and entangled all who inhabited that time in America's history. I appreciate that the description of the war was not boiled down to common platitudes, but at the same time it was about as un-obtuse as any such treatment could be, given the many conflicting forces that converged upon that point in time.

I view this compact volume as a valuable overview of the forces surrounding the life of a U. S. President who did more to shape a young nation than possibly any other figure outside of the founding fathers. At the same time, it presents a fairly masterful summary of the events of the Civil War. This book is well worth reading.

Though The Technique of Film Editing has not been revised since 1968, it is still the single most comprehensive and engaging volume on film editing. Karel Reisz and Gavin Millar introduce readers to every aspect of the editor's craft. They provide a concise history of editing and describe editing style as it applies to every genre of moviemaking, including the many types of narrative and documentary films. In 1968 the original text was reprinted as it stood, as it was felt that any attempt to revise or reinterpret it could only blur its spirit. The second edition has now also reprinted 13 times. On publication, the film director Anthony Asquith said `this book is an absolute must not only for film technicians but for every intelligent filmgoer' and more recently it has been said that `it is probably the most successful film textbook in English, and has had a great influence on the technique of the cinema.'

THE Book on Film Editing

This review is for the enhanced second edition, published in 2010. The Technique of Film Editing is the seminal work on the subject of editing cinematography. It was originally published in 1953 and revised and expanded as a second edition in 1968. The 2010 printing is essentially a reprint of the 1968 second edition with an updated forward. That does not diminish the book in the least, the 1968 edition is as valid today as the day it was published.

Although we live in an increasingly digital world, this book is every bit as pertinent to the digital editor working with Final Cut as it is to a celluloid editor working on a Movieola. For this book is not about software or hardware, but about the process and art of editing. It makes no difference whether the images were captured on silver halide film, video tape or a silicon chip.

The Technique of Film Editing is comprehensive, it begins with a history of editing and then moves on to the practice of editing in a variety of cinemagraphic styles, from action and comedy sequences, documentary reportage, montages and dialog sequences, to name only a few. What follows next is a discussion of the timeless principles of editing, such as timing, pace and rhythm.

In the second part of the book, Reisz and Millar explore the work of some notable directors and editors. They point out to us how seemingly minor choices in framing and editing can have a profound impact on how the scene is perceived by the audience. The real examples (film frames are printed that coincide with the text) from real films make this section particularly useful. Through the printed examples, you can precisely see the various points the authors are making. This was my favorite part of the book - I could understand the choices the directors and editors made and I learned much from that.

If you are involved with film editing, in any of its various forms, this is a book you should not be without. Prior to this reprinting, older copies were selling at several times this price in used bookstores and online. Focal Press is to be commended for bringing back a great work.

Want to make films? Read this book!

First you have to find it. Incidentally, I am sure it is not extremely difficult to find, for I happen to have found it accidentally in a film book store in Hollywood. Needless to say this book provides any potential film maker with an exciting view of the craft, turning mechanics into art. It is written in a clear style and in an almost profound way it will change the way you understand cinema and editing. Reisz and Millar will teach you how to turn the art of film into film art.

Quickly becoming a museum piece

I'm currently in the middle of editing on an hour-long documentary, so I was excited to get the chance to review a book on editing. Unfortunately I didn't come out of it with the knowledge I was hoping for. The Technique of Film Editing is somewhat outdated and inaccessible for modern uses.

The major problem is that a temporal art form like film (especially the editing of it) is very difficult to capture in text form. I find it nearly impossible to judge shot selection and flow from simple text descriptions, even with footage lengths and stills. (which are given only occasionally)

It's hard to really tell what's going on without actually watching the films. And with such an out of date selection that's often easier said than done.

I checked every film that the book mentioned in-depth to see how easy they were to track down. And while the majority of them are easy to come by, I found about 20 that weren't available on Netflix and of those only 4 were readily available on Amazon.

The forward to the added second section pretty much says it all. It states that not only is the first part outdated (even for 1968) the second part will likely age even faster; and it's right. So much of the later part of the book is about the current film trends of the time like cinemascope and the French New Wave and only some of it has much to do with the actual editing.

I learned far more about editing by spending an hour and watching The Cutting Edge - The Magic of Movie Editing, which hits the highlights of pretty much everything mentioned in this book, plus some bits of knowledge from editor Walter Murch that are far more readily useful than much of what's written in this book.

If you have some experience editing you may be able to glean a few interesting tidbits from this book, but in this day and age The Technique of Film Editing seems more important for its contribution to the craft than continuing to teach it.
