Masterfully researched and written biography of a great woman

Stacy Schiff took a great risk when she wrote "Cleopatra: A Life." Can a woman branded a "whore" by the Great Bard himself, ever really have a reputation as anything else? Directly challenging 2,000 year old assumptions that were enhanced by the likes of Dante, and director Joseph Mankiewicz, is a tall order for even the most accomplished writer. Ms. Schiff brilliantly rises to the task.

Ms. Schiff brings to vivid life a very different Cleopatra from the one depicted to us by playwrights and movie directors. Instead of a wanton seductress relying solely upon her looks, Cleopatra was one of the most authoritative rulers in the history of humanity, inheriting at the age of 18 one of the greatest kingdoms ever known, during a time in history when women had about the same social stature as farm animals.

Furthermore, Ms. Schiff is a wordsmith extraordinaire. In beautifully constructed prose that reminded me more of Nabokov than your typical biographer, Ms. Schiff paints a lovely, nuanced portrait of a great and vastly misunderstood woman. And what life the author brings to ancient Egypt too! The descriptions of the ancient world in which Cleopatra lived were so vivid that you would think the author was Cleopatra's contemporary, and not her 21st century biographer.

Ms. Schiff had a tough act to follow with herself; all her previous books have won, or been nominated for, just about every pretigious literary award you can think of.
I wouldn't be surprised if she at least gets on the short-list for the Pulitzer with "Cleopatra: A Life."

Her gorgeous life--what there is to tell of it

"Cleopatra: A Life" is not the book one wants it to be. A new biography of one of the most fascinating women in history who had liasons with two of the most fascinating men in history should, at least, entertain us. After all, she was Isis personified, the Queen of the Nile, the last Pharoah of Egypt, the end of the 300-year Ptolemaic dynasty, the woman who held the keys to the granaries that fed Rome, a legendary beauty of great charisma, the wealthiest woman on Earth, the symbol of all that was exotic and enticing about the sensual East--surely a biography of Cleopatra has got to be great. Stacy Schiff's book, however, disappoints. Certainly a good deal of that disappointment stems from the fact that there is simply very little information extant about Cleopatra, and much of what is "known" is questionable. There are no primary sources except her enemies, who wrote what served their purposes, while the three main secondary sources, Plutarch (writing primarily about Antony), Appian, and Dio lived well after her lifetime and all contradict one another. Even Caesar himself only mentioned her briefly. Her capital city, the Alexandria she knew, lies under the sea or has been destroyed by war and modern building; other than the profiles on her coins, there isn't even a portrait of her. Ms. Schiff acknowledges the almost total lack of reliable information right from the start, but can't quite overcome the enormity of that obstacle. Her prose is often stilted as she fills pages with everything but Cleopatra's life. We learn what her education probably consisted of, what the people of Alexandria ate and therefore what Cleopatra probably ate, how they partied (and they really partied); we get lots of sentences beginning with "she probably," "she may have," "she might have," "we can guess she..." This becomes both frustrating and tedious to read. We do get a good picture of Alexandrian life in the 1st century B.C., and lots of incidental details (the importance of the great goddess, Isis, the racial and religious make-up of the city, a great deal of detail about the wealth and importance of Alexandria at this time, even birth control methods), but there is very little justification for filling the first 150 pages with so much that sheds no light on Cleopatra or her life. That which is known about her background, her early life, and her relationship with Caesar takes little time to relate, and the author gets bogged down in irrelevant information. It becomes further mired as we are forced to listen to Cicero whine about Alexandria, Antony, and his favorite object of scorn, Cleopatra herself (who apparently upset him over a book). One can't help but wish that Ms. Schiff had decided to get through this material more quickly in order to bring us to the moment of Antony's appearance in Cleopatra's life, for his effect on the book is much as his effect on Cleopatra's life: things get much more interesting.

The second half of the book is dedicated to the exploration of that most intriguing of relationships, though Ms. Schiff doesn't seem to subscribe to the idea of theirs being a great romance. She doesn't really seem to have a point of view about many things, including the source of Cleopatra's great power over two of the greatest men of her age. Instead, she presents various accounts about all the major events of the last ten years of Cleopatra's life, during which she was Antony's faithful lover and mother to three children by him in addition to her son, Caesarion, by Julius Caesar (his only son and only living child), and Antony's eldest children by an early marriage. The details of their life together--as much as can be known--are covered well, and the tension mounts as they plummet headlong into war and the final, fatal, showdown with Octavian. All of this is well-written and exciting to read; clearly, when Ms. Schiff has something to write about, she writes vividly. And this is a story worth telling--whether Cleopatra and Antony partnered out of passion, or politics, or both, it is certainly one of the great couplings of all time. The bewildering and disastrous Battle of Actium, Cleopatra's building of her own Mausoleum, Antony's botched suicide and subsequent death in Cleopatra's arms are the stuff of high opera. Octavian's cold, ruthless gamesmanship versus Cleopatra's determined, intelligent survivalism made for a dramatic end-game, regardless of the veracity of the varying accounts (poison or an unlikely, very handy, cobra? Cleopatra's suicide or murder by Octavian?).

The chief problem for any biographer of Cleopatra is that she is primarily known as the mistress of Caesar and Antony--she really had no "life" of her own as far as history is concerned, unlike Elizabeth I or Eleanor of Aquitaine whose lives stand on their own merits. While she was allowed to rule Egypt on her own, unlike the other "client kings" of Rome, apparently no one chronicled her life during the periods when she was not having a direct impact on Rome and its leaders. Rome had a unique problem on its hands with Cleopatra. She was more than just an expendable dragon sitting on a great pile of treasure--she was a beautiful woman, able to insinuate herself into Caesar's life sufficiently to end up carrying the greatest card of all: his son. With that Ace up her sleeve, she couldn't be paid off or killed, and she certainly couldn't be ignored. She became a force to reckon with, and as such, a major player on Rome's stage (despite its resistance to this disquieting reality); for this reason we know more about her than we likely would have ever known about some other Ptolemy who just happened to be the nominal Pharoah under Rome's jurisdiction. Her story, for all its gaps and mythologized elements, has inspired artists and writers for more than two thousand years; that will just have to be enough for us.

Fascinating person, who happened to be a woman.

We read this in our book club. About half of us really liked it. The other half couldn't get through it all. You probably need to enjoy reading non-fiction, history, and biographies to like the book. The best part is to learn about the "real" Cleopatra. Yes, she was a seductress. But primarily for reasons of survival and national interests. At the time she lived, you were either a friend of the Roman leaders, or you (and your country) were their conquered slaves. It was interesting to learn that Egyptian culture was far more advanced than the Romans. The ceremonies were on a scale that is hard to comprehend. I also liked the description of Marc Antony's antics, e.g. hitching lions to a chariot to go on a joyride. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is because it is such a LONG read, not for the everyone.

All of these “R-words” are values that great leaders, in this case women leaders

I just had to write a book review for my Women In Business course. I figured I would share some of it here as well:

The idea of this book is that, once completed, your outlook on business will change and your confidence level will rise. The author states that most women are competent or confident, but not both and the end goal is to change that. The book is broken up into the following four sections: Relationships, Reputation, Results and Resilience. All of these “R-words” are values that great leaders, in this case women leaders, should value and strive for. Throughout the book the author addresses each of these topics individually, however, they are all equally important and complement one another.

I really hoped for this book to become my new go-to guide for work-related self-help. I lack confidence at the office. I have been told so in my annual reviews. Killelea starts off strong by providing the reader with her background before she reached success is her career, but as the book progressed she plugged her company, Half The Sky Leadership Institute, so often, that I felt as if I was reading a very long brochure about reasons why the program would be useful to me - which maybe it would be, but I definitely did not get the same desired results or guidance that I was seeking from this book. In addition to the whole thing sounding similar to a sales pitch, I thought that the placement of the interviews with successful women were more of an interruption rather than insightful. They were right smack in the middle of the chapter and felt sort of random as they were often repetitive or unrelated to the specific topic being discussed.

When speaking of developing key relationships to aid in cultivating your success, Killelea says, “We all have time for a coffee or lunch at least once a week with a colleague, mentor, sponsor, ally, or client who can help support our goals as we build our brand.” (Killelea, 2016, pg. 23) My thoughts were that if she truly believed that this is a feasible relationship-building option for everyone, she must not be very credible. While the importance of building relationships is undeniable as “any executive, and perhaps especially any woman, who is placed into a top spot without a significant network of support relationships is likely to be at risk” (Kellerman, Rhode, & O'Connor, 2007, pg. 434), as we explored the discussion topic in Module 5 of Women in Business: Managing and Leading, we found that work-life conflict is very much so a challenge for many women and going out to lunch or coffee at least once a week would be unrealistic and, not to mention, costly. Perhaps this could be viable for someone who is higher up on the corporate ladder, but I would most disagree with the statement overall. I also felt like the book contradicted itself in many instances when it comes to the popular confidence-related phrase “Fake it until you make it.” The author references it throughout the book and it seems like she cannot make up her mind as to whether or not she believes that these are words to live by. In Women & Leadership: The State of Play and Strategies for Change, it is mentioned that “suppressing one’s authentic self can have dramatic consequences, so it is important to uncover strategies for enhancing authenticity in the workplace.” (Kellerman, Rhode, & O'Connor, 2007, pg. 330)

The Confidence Effect also touched on the topic of leadership style. The “association of leadership and masculinity encourages the expectation that women will behave differently from men when we do exercise the authority: that we will lead in what are thought of as ‘typically female ways.’” (Kellerman, Rhode, & O'Connor, 2007, pg. 67) Killelea, described one of her client’s as a “direct leader” and stating that “we all know how men – particularly groups of men – respond to that!” (Killelea, 2016, pg. 60) She is referencing a gender stereotype, “people not only expect a woman to be warm, kind and sensitive, they prefer women to behave in such communal ways. Women who fail to show a warm, sensitive side may be seen as difficult and unlikeable.” (Kellerman, Rhode, & O'Connor, 2007, pg. 128) She suggested that in order to deal with this effectively, her client should treat her leadership style as a light dimmer switch and adjust the settings to the situation accordingly.

I know that you had mentioned that The Confidence Effect was on your reading list, Professor, but I would not highly recommend it due to the lack of substance and consistency presented throughout.

While women have made great strides in the workforce

While women have made great strides in the workforce, it doesn't seem to be the case when you look at leadership positions. There certainly are many reasons for this but I believe one of the major reasons is a lack of confidence. In my own search for more confidence, I have found three books to be very comforting and helpful: Presence, the Confidence Code and now the Confidence Effect. The book underscores the importance of only only being competent but also the need to be confident. It is a quick read with a lot of helpful ideas and "to do's" for women looking to get more out of their careers. Just like exercise helps us get healthy, taking specific steps to build confidence will help anyone get more out of their work/career.

The Confident Effect had a tremendous affect on me

The Confidence Effect is a great read. I was in a place where I was trying to relocate my confidence. Grace Killelea's book not only helped with that, but with refining my definitions of confidence and the traits associated with it. The book is segmented into 4 easily consumable parts. It avoids the clichéd advice and helped me to see that I don't have to remake myself. There are tweaks that can be made to get back on the right track.

I really enjoyed that the author shared her struggles and journey to where she is today while not coming off as out of touch. She also includes the voices of other women leaders. This book has already opened me up to some self-awareness and self-reflection that has tremendously changed my viewpoint and my behaviors. This book has reminded me that I have the power, the right and the ability to make my own way iin my career and in the world. It has given me the prompts for self-assessment to determine how to make it happen.



The Confidence Effect squelched my panic about finding my way back to confidence by laying things out into parts - the 4 Rs of Success. And before that, I was introduced to a definition of success that wasn't centered around hard numbers (bank account, direct reports, levels in the organization, etc.). Instead, success is defined as a balance between competence and confidence. Both, together. Well, I know I am competent; that's an understatement. I just needed the confidence part.

I was able to assess my health in each of these areas and determine what I needed to do to strengthen in each area.

Relationships. This area goes beyond traditional networking. It encouraged me to first look at the relationships I currently have and assess that health of those. Do I have Mentors, Sponsors, Advocates & Champions? Do I play any of those roles for others? Have I put myself in a position to do so? Having relationships where I am on both the giving and receiving side of the table is key to shaping my reputation into the shape I would like it to have.

In this section, Executive Presence & appearance was covered. She references a study from the Center for Talent Innovation that breaks Executive Presence into 3 main components: Gravitas, Communication, and Appearance. I hate the appearance discussion as I have my own self/body-image issues. But in The Confidence Effect, the author shares that she had the same hang-ups and how she moved (and continues to move) through them. Also, appearance is not approached in the 'one size fits all' approach I usually hear. This was refreshing.

Reputation. "Think of your reputation as the echo that lingers in the room long after you leave." Actually, in many cases, it often gets to the room long before you arrive as well. In this area, I was challenges with more self-reflection around how I am perceived. I had to accept the good and the bad. Interestingly enough, excepting the good was harder to accept. But, acknowledging what to hold on to and nurture is as important as knowing what to let go of. In this section, I was reminded of those articles and lessons about "speaking up", "raising my hand" and "promoting myself". However, the added piece here is making the effort to deliberately identify what I actually have to offer. What are the talents and gifts I bring to the table? Bring those with confidence and no apologies.

Results. This is where the rubber meets the road. This is the area women usually accel in, delivering results. This remains important in addition to the two Rs above. Long term success cannot be had on Relationships & Reputation alone. It is the results that feed the two. The push & pull between tactics and strategy show up here as well. The fact of the matter is that leaders think strategically. Women are usually relegated to being tactical, sometimes by others and sometime by our own hand. Grace Killelea identifies strategic thinking by "thinking about how people, opportunities and resources connect with one another to achieve results." Whether in the tactical role or strategic role or a blending of the two, it's important to be accountable and responsible for the results - good and bad.

Resilience. I've gotten this far in my career, so I've shown resilience; but rarely deliberately. If the definition of resilience extends beyond "living to see another day", I have more work to do. Killelea adds another dimension to the definition, "overcoming adversity and winning…and adapting to avoid future challenges in the first place." She states that it has to be a transferable skill that moves the act of overcoming into transformation. I have overcome a lot in 16 years. I also run into the same wall more than once in my career. Again, self-reflection is required after overcoming a situation to figure out how to avoid it ever again.

As I said earlier, this book has already given me the ability to sit up taller and step into my role with more confidence. My knowing what I plan to do to grow and develop my reputation and to make my resilience transformational, alone gives me confidence. Because I know that it's within my abilities to do so. Confidence is not something reserved for those born into it. We all have the ability to access it and I look forward to doing just that.

Connect Access not Included

Most people purchasing this book are doing so because it is a required book for their course. Therefore I will not go into detail about content. I did want to make sure that people knew it does not come with a registration code for the online companion website. Unfortunately for me I have to buy it separately through the manufacture's website for around $50. I thought this was important information that should be available before you decide to purchase through Amazon. If the online content is a requirement for your course, you should consider the lack of it in your financial analysis.

Great book! Price it too high!

The only complaint I have is the high price tag on this book.

I know that some of the students in my beginning accounting class say this book is hard to read, but I disagree. I am older and have some previous business experience. This book answers and simplifies many of the mysteries of accounting that I have been confused about for years. The book's approach is straightforward, using short chapters. The first half of each chapter presents the material and the second half goes over the main points (called "Objectives"), presents supplementary material, and provides discussion questions and sample problems.

I originally rented this book from Amazon, but then liked it so much that I bought a brand new copy from my student bookstore. The new book came with online access which allows the book to read itself to me. This really helps me easily cover the material. I listen while I read.

I could easily learn the material from this book without going to class - that is a very rare thing in a textbook!

Great Book, would not even consider a different book.

The best thing about this book is that it is organized extremely well. Also, it is written in very friendly and easy to understand wording. It feels like the authors really took a lot of time to word everything in the most basic and easy to understand way.

It is essential that you understand how the book is put together to make the best of it and not just skim and ignore certain pages. The only thing I do not like about this book is that there are no answers. Just picture yourself doing math problems in a math book without any answers in the back x 10...that's how frustrating it is not to have answers in accounting. I suppose you will have to rely on the professor or some other source for answers.

This book is exactly what the title states, solved problems in solid state physics. The book has an impressive problem set which includes topics like density functional theory, electron-phonon coupling, transport properties, and superconductivity. I like how the solution immediately follows the problem which makes the learning process much easier. The caveat with this book is you need to have a graduate level solid state physics textbook (e.g. Ashcroft-Mermin) at your side otherwise it’s easy to get lost. In addition, having an advance mathematics textbook will also help. Because the nature of the problems in this text, many of the mundane and tedious mathematical steps have been omitted, so it’s up to the reader to fill in the blanks. Overall, this is a fantastic text to have if you are trying to self-learn.

Tracy Stern is the creator of the popular Salontea and Beautea product lines, which are sold at specialty shops and boutiques around the world and on her website, www.tracystern.com. She hosts a tea salon in Manhattan and organizes bridal showers, banquets, and themed parties around the country. Stern and her products have appeared on numerous national television

black tea martini
Makes 1 cocktail

Make these one at a time, to order, for your guests. Brew and chill the tea in advance.

• 1⁄4 cup (2 ounces) vodka
• 1⁄4 cup (2 ounces) brewed black tea, chilled
• Ice
• Chopped black tea leaves
• Sugar


Shake the vodka and tea together in a cocktail shaker with ice. On a shallow plate, mix together enough tea leaves and sugar for the rim of a martini glass. Moisten the rim of a chilled martini glass with water and then dip it into the tea leaves and sugar. Strain the martini mixture into the prepared glass.

Absolutely Wonderful Book!!!!

I just can't say enough about this book. It's a wonderful reference for anyone wanting to have "real" tea parties. It is full of recipes, tips and tons of information about tea parties. The author is obviously very passionate and well educated about her subject.

Not Enough Photos, Advocates Using Live Beings as Decoration

I purchased this book because I was hoping it would help me with planning my first-ever tea party -- for friends who are getting married. I'm particularly interested in the nuts and bolts (my party is for 30 people; for example: do I put a teapot on every table? How do I boil that much water? Do I need one kettle per each teapot? How best to coordinate, since with some teas you want boiling water but some just off the boil, etc.?), but that level of detail is not included in this book. I was also disappointed in the lack of photos -- there is just one main photo at the head of each chapter, but even some of those -- particularly the one illustrating the winter-themed party, which is simply a closeup on a bowl of soup -- are disappointing. In addition, the book is packed with recipes containing meat and dairy -- recipes that I would never use. Finally -- and offensively -- the author suggests using bowls of goldfish or cages of "rented" (from a pet store!) birds as decor! Animals are feeling beings, not tinsel! I can't return this book fast enough. Would love recommendations of something better.
